Chapter 26: Dates and Death

A red and white orb flew over HotHead's head and hit Ferroseed. Ferroseed disappeared inside the ball in a flash of red. The PokeBall shook three times then clicked. Chase walked over and picked up the PokeBall. "I'll call you Gyro." e said with a big smile. Suddenly, the smile disappeared and he fell backwards, hitting his head on the cold hard cave floor.

"Chase!" Chris screamed. "Someone help!"

Luckily, her pleas were heard by the cave medic, who was just around the corner ahead of them. "Stand back!" he told Chris. Then me leaned down and listened for Chase's heartbeat.

His chest was silent.

The medic started pushing with both hands on Chase's chest. After thirty pushes, he tilted Chase's head back and blew two breaths into his mouth. After several excruciating minutes, Chase's eyes fluttered open and he started to cough. Then the medic stood up and tossed a Pokeball into the air. In a flash of red light, a huge red and white bird appeared. The medic put a special harness on the bird while keeping a close eye on Chase.

"Ok Brav. Take this boy to the hospital in Mistralton City. And hurry!"

The medic but Chase in the harness he had attached to Brav and the Pokemon flew off.

"Thank you sir."

"No problem."

And with that, Chris hurried of to follow her friend.

"This Berry salad is divine," Sierra told Adam. After exiting the cave, he had led her all the way to Mistralton City, just so they could go out on a date. She was daintily picking at her salad, whereas Adam had long since finished his meal. As waiter came over to refill the minuscule amount of water she had drank in the past two minutes, Sierra thought she saw a large bird fly overhead, into the city.

"Hey, did you see that bird?"

"Huh? No, I didn't. I was to busy stating into your eyes."

Sierra felt her face turn as red as HotHead's. Adam began to lean in, and Sierra obliged to his obvious request. Their lips touched, and stayed there for what seemed like hours. When Sierra finally pulled away, she thought she saw Chris sprinting past the restaurant. She dismissed the thought immediately. "Their probably still in the cave, knowing Chase's sense of direction," she thought. "I do need to remember to tell Chris about this later."

Sweaty and out of breath, Chris arrived at the hospital minutes after Brav did. An old song, Bye Bye Butterfree, was playing in the lobby:

Bye bye Butterfree,

This is the last you'll see of me.

Don't be sad as you fly across the sea.

Just never forget me,

In your new home, Butterfree.

She fast-walked up to the desk and asked where the bird had taken Chase.

"Well," the attendant told her. "If your friend was airlifted her, I would guess he's in the ER."

Her guess was confirmed when a team of doctors and nurses ran across the lobby and into the emergency care section. Chris ran after them, and tossed a quick "Thanks!" over her shoulder.

Turns out most of the doctors were going to different rooms, but two of them went to Chase's. Chris followed them in, and gasped at what she saw.

Chase was lying in the hospital cot, unconscious. There were numerous wires and machines monitoring his vitals. His shirt was off, revealing a cut on his shoulder. It wasn't deep, but the skin around it had turned deep purple. As she watched, the purple began to spread slowly.

"Excuse me miss," the doctor said. "Were you with this boy when he was hurt?"

"Yes. We were in Chargestone Cave, near the exit thank goodness, when a Ferroseed attacked. It launched Poison Spikes everywhere. He knocked me down to save me but..." her voice broke.

"Well, it appears your friend here is poisoned. Badly." Chris's heart dropped. "A specialist is flying in as we speak to check him out. If you need anything, we're right down the hall."

"Okay. Thank you," she said in a weak voice. When the doctors left, Chris let out a shaky breath she didn't know she was holding. She looked back at Chase.

"This could've been me. But you took the spike for me," Chris walked over to Chase.

"Thank you Chase." she said. Then she leaned down and kissed his forehead.

Suddenly, one of the machines started beeping faster and faster. Chris looked down and saw the purple had spread to his chest. Chase's chest shot up, as if someone was pulling him by a string attached to it. His arms bent at awkward angles.

"We need a doctor in here!" Chris screamed. Then the machine let out a long beep.

Bye bye Butterfree...
