Arrival
Dipper and Mabel arrive in Gravity Falls. They were sent there when their parents thought they needed more exposure to wild Pokémon. Whist Mabel managed to catch a Ralts, Dipper had trouble finding a starter.
Then there was their great uncle Stan. Despite not being a trainer, he ran a safari zone called the Mystery Safari. For the twins, it seemed like it'd be the same, boring routine all Summer until...
Mabel throws yet another ball at a magikarp. One shake, two shakes, three shakes, the ball breaks. The magikarp hops back into the water.
"Mabel," Dipper explains, "I know you wanna catch em' all, buy do you have to try to catch every Pokémon you come across?"
"I don't catch that many," Mable replies.
Dipper sighs. She had six magikarps already. It was getting ridiculous. Stan walks out into the safari zone. "Alright come inside you two," Stan demands, "everyone's getting off work. We're getting a rush of customers. Wendy's busy on the counter so Dipper, I need you to hand these signs in the dark and eerie part of the forest."
"Stan whenever I'm in those forest I fell like I'm being watched," Dipper explains, "I'm telling you there's something out there."
Stan sighs, "kid, you gotta catch a starter, and the legendaries in the forest is just a bunch of malarkey made up to sell safari balls. So stop being so paranoid!" Stan tosses Dipper the signs and some safari balls. Dipper sighs and goes out into the forest.
After hanging several signs, he begins to hang another one. The tree makes a metalic sound. Dipper hits it again. It clangs against the mallet. Dipper touches it, and realizes there's a hidden door. He opens it, and finds an odd control panel. After messing with it for a bit, another secret compartment opens. In it, Dipper finds an old master ball. Dipper sends out the Pokémon within the ball, and learns its a Regirock.
The Regirock looms over Dipper, not moving, not doing anything. Dipper notices some markings on it. He begins to read, "it's been five years since I began to investigate the odd Pokémon in Gravity Falls." Dipper looks at lines of text etched into the monolithic Pokémon, before stopping on a particular line.
"Unfortunately my suspensions have been confirmed," Dipper reads, "I'm being watched. I must hide the Regis before he finds them. Remember, in Gravity Falls there is no one you can trust."
Dipper had learned about the Regis in school. There are three. Regirock, Regice, and Registeel. He wonders where the other two are.
"No one you can trust," Dipper repeats aloud.
"Wow!" Mable exclaims, "what did you catch?"
"Uhhhhh..." Dipper replies, "just a Regirock."
"What's it doing here?" Mabel inquiries, "I thought the Regis were from Hohhen."
"There's more than one of each Mable, a set in Unova, a set in Sinnoh, and a set in Hohhen, but I never imagined there'd be a set here."
"So what we gonna do with it?" Mable asks.
Dipper shrugs.
"You've got no gym badges," Mable explains, "and you didn't catch it yourself. Will it even obey?"
"Let's see," Dipper replies, "Regirock, ancient power."
The Regirock does not respond.
"Whelp," Dipper sighs, "guess not. Anyways, I'm going back to the shack. Meet you there."
Dipper leaves. Afterwards, a young lass about Mable's age appears from the forest.
"Hi," she greets, "I'm lost could you help me out?"
"Oh," Mable replies, "I'm Mable. Here, follow me. I'll lead you to the road. Let's go."
The two walk and start to get along fairly well.
"Hey," you wanna hang out later?" The lass asks.
"Sure," Mable replies, "I'm up at the Mystery Safari, stop by anytime."
The rest of the day is uneventful. Tomorrow however, things really start to escalate.
There's a knock on the door. "I got it!" Mable exclaims.
She opens the door. "Hey," the lass smiles, "wanna hang out?"
"Oh," Mable replies, "first let me introduce you to my brother."
The lass is somehow ticked off by the suggestion. "I've heard about him," the lass explains, "seems like a real jerk."
"Ah," come on, "it'll only take a minute."
"Fine," the lass sighs, "let's get this over with."
The two go upstairs. "Hey Dipper," Mable greets.
"Hey Mable," Dipper replies, not noticing Mable's new friend, "what's up."
"Oh," Mable replies, "meet my new friend."
Dipper turns around, and immediately he knows something is amiss. The lass's eyes are cold, soulless. She doesn't seem to blink. Her hair is to perfect assuming she walked to the Mystery Safari. In fact, her hair doesn't even move as she moves her head.
"What's your name?" Dipper inquiries.
"Uhhh..." the lass seems to hesitate, "Nor...mie?"
Dipper notices somthing off about Normie, but decides not to say anything at the moment.
"Well," Normie breaks the awkward silence, "I'm out, see ya."
Normie and Mable leave. Dipper decides to read the markings on his Regirock, knowing there's something about Normie that isn't right.
He reads an entry, "Gengars are capable of possession and will posses the recently deceased to steal the souls of the living. Gengars often target children."
"Could Normie actually be a Gengar?" Dipper thinks aloud returning Regirock to its Pokéball.
"It's a delima to be sure," Soos interjects as he enters the room.
"Soos," Dipper replies, "you've seen Normie. There's something off about her, right?"
"Totally," Soos replies, "one thing I noticed was she constantly has this doll. Maybe it's what's allowing it to enter the world of the living?"
"Well," Dipper replies, "I'll start there. Thanks Soos."
"Soos?" Stan calls, "there's a patrat in the pantry!" Soos sends out his porygon.
"I am needed elsewhere," Soos explains. He goes downstairs. Dipper goes into town, keeping an eye on Normie, but he doesn't find anything that he can use as proof. He decides to just ask Mable outright.
"Mable," Dipper explains later that evening, "we gotta talk about Normie."
"Oh," Mable replies, "we're heading to the mall in a few. Wanna tag along?"
"That's just it," Dipper replies, "I think Normie might be a Gengar."
"How dare you!" Mable yells.
Dipper then remembers Gengar can be used as an offensive term meaning aggressive or evil.
"No," Dipper explains, "I mean literally. I think a Gengar is possessing a corpse and pretending to be Normie. It all adds up, the hesitation when asking for a name, the lack of any other freinds or family, it's all off, don't you think?"
"You need to relax," Mable replies, "we're just heading down to the mall. She found this jewel at the graveyard and she said she'd pay to have it bedazzled onto my sweater... somehow."
Mable shows Dipper the jewel, it's very colorful, and almost seems to have a mystical property to it. "Mable!" Dipper yells, "she's gonna steal your soul!"
"Listen Dipper," Mabel snaps back, "this is the first friend I've made since we came here and you're not gonna mess this up! Now I'm leaving! Be back later!"
Mable leaves, slaming the door. Dipper sighs. He knows he can't really prove anything. It's not like Normie was showing any definitive signs of being a ghost like a lack of a shadow or something.
Dipper looks out the windows, it looks like rain is coming in. Through the clouds, sunlight pierces through. It's then that Dipper realizes, Normie has no shadow!
He immediately dashes downstairs to catch up to Mable, but they're long gone before he can do anything.
He looks around, searching for some way to catch up to them, then Wendy pulls up in the golf cart. "Wendy!" Dipper exclaims, "quick! I need the golf cart to save Mable from a Gengar!"
"Woah," Wendy replies, "that's a low blow. Chill dude."
"I mean literally!" Dipper replies in a rushed panic.
"Don't scratch it kid," Wendy smiles handing Dipper the keys, "after all it is a ghost type."
Dipper begins to drive off, only to be stopped by Soos.
"Hey," he greets, "it's me, Soos. This is in case you wanna catch it." He hands Dipper some safari balls.
"Thanks," Dipper replies.
"And this is for the aesthetic," Soos continues handing Dipper a premier ball.
"Thanks?" Dipper replies. Dipper begins to drive off.
"Never hurts to have a spare!" Soos reminds.
Meanwhile, Mable and Normie are taking a shortcut through the forest on their way back to the shack, the odd jewel now sewn into her sweater.
"Mable," Normie sighs clutching her doll, "have you ever heard of a Banette?"
"Vengeful spirits that posses dolls?" Mable replies, "yeah, why do you ask? Did you catch one?"
Dipper arrives in the golf cart. "Mable!" He yells, "she has no shadow! Run!"
Normie glares at Dipper, and reveals her true. She possesses the doll, revealing that she's not a Gengar, but a Banette.
"Banette?" Dipper asks, "huh, well I was off." Dipper send out Regirock and begins to read. "Banette, lieing and deceitful, these spirits posses discarded dolls and will often seek out their previous owners. If you do not have a dark or ghost type it is best to flee."
Dipper knows that Regirock isn't going to obey, so he tries to catch the Banette. He throws a safari ball. It doesn't shake, and busts instantly.
"Mable let's go!" Dipper yells.
"You're not going anywhere," Normie growls. The gem on Mable's sweater begins to glow. Normie holds a mega stone, Banetteite.
Normie mega evolves. "I won't let Dipper take you away again!" Normie yells. Dipper slams on the gas and returns Regirock to its Pokéball. Normie gives chase.
Mable sends out her Ralts. "Confusion!" She demands.
The Ralts gets on the roof of the cart and uses confusion. Normie uses shadow claw on the Ralts, fainting it.
"Sorry Lily," Mable comforts the Ralts before returning it to its Pokéball.
"Do you have anything else?" Dipper asks.
"Yeah," Mable replies, "caught this one today. Named him Brush."
Mable sends out a Smeargle.
"Confuse ray!" Mable demands. The Smeargle tries to use confuse ray, but misses. Normie uses dark pulse, fainting Bush.
Mable returns Bush to his Pokéball.
"He gonna be one of your main six?" Dipper asks.
"Really," Mable replies, "now?"
"Just asking," Dipper replies, "thought you'd have someone to compliment his abilities."
"Not until I reach him baton pass," Mable replies, "but that's not important right now! What are we gonna do?"
Normie claws at the cart, slashing a tire. The cart flips over. Dipper's leg is caught under it. Mable tries to get him unstuck, but she's to late. Normie approaches.
"Hello Dipper," Normie smirks, "remember me?"
"What do you want with me?" Dipper asks, "I never had a doll!"
Normie chuckles. "Wow, you really don't realize. Maybe I can jog your memory. Mable did forget something when you were rushing her out of the house, but what was it? Nothing important, right? Oh, but it was Dipper. I was what you forgot, Mable's favorite doll. You took Mable away from me, but never again! Die!" Dipper looks around desperately. The safari balls are scattered about, but out of his reach. He can however, reach the premiere ball.
"Normie wait," Mable pleads, "we can still be freinds. Leaving you behind was an accident. Forgive Dipper, and we can be freinds again."
"Really?" Normie asks approaching Mable.
"No!" Mable replies snatching the Banetteite, "you just tried to kill my brother what the heck is wrong with you?!?"
Normie tuns away, a sad expression on her face. There's a moment of silence, no one knows what to say for a moment.
"Normie," Dipper breaks the silence, "it's OK. It is my fault you were abandoned, but if you're willing to forgive me, I'm sure Mable will forgive you. Right?"
"Sure," Mable replies, "why not?"
"OK," Normie smiles, "it's a deal. Go ahead and catch me, I won't fight back."
Mable grabs the premiere ball and throws it. Normie goes in without a fight. Mable takes the premiere ball. Her team now is Lily, Bush, and Normie. Mable sends Normie back out.
"Help Dipper out," she demands.
"Sure thing," Normie replies. Normie lifts the golf cart, freeing Dipper's leg.
"Thanks," Mable smiles, "now return." Mable returns Normie to her Pokéball. The two head inside, a bit banged up after all that just happened.
"What happened to you two?" Stan asks.
"Rather not talk about it," Dipper replies. The two begin to head upstairs to rest after the eventful day.
"Well," Stan explains, "would you look at this, it's closing time and the lost and found is still full of junk. Why don't you two take somthing?"
"Really?" Mable smiles.
"What's the catch?" Dipper interjects.
"The catch is you gotta choose before I change my mind," Stan replies, "so hurry up and pick something."
Dipper searches the lost and found, eventually finding a hat with a pine tree on it that he likes. He keeps the hat.
Meanwhile, Mable finds a grappling hook. "I will take this grappling hook!" Mable exclaims.
"Really?" Stan asks, "are you sure you wouldn't want a doll or-"
"No!" Dipper and Mable reply.
"Well," Stan replies, "it's been a long day, so why don't you two hit the hay eh?"
Dipper and Mable head upstairs. When they're out of sight, Stan approaches the vending machine, and heads into a hidden door behind it.
Upstairs, Dipper etches into the Regirock. "This Regirock said that in Gravity Falls there is no one you can trust, but when you face a mega Banette with someone, you can be preety sure they always got your back."
"Hey Mable," Dipper asks, "could you get the light?"
"I'm on it," Mable replies. She shoots the lantern with her grappling hook, shattering it. Thus ends the twin's first interesting day in Gravity Falls, but this story, is only just beginning...
