Chapter One
"What the h3ll is going on? Who are you?!", I screamed, trying to rip the blindfolds from my face.
"Will you stop?", yelled a familiar voice. The blindfolds were removed and I could see the face. That face was definitely...familiar, alright. My ex-wife, Eliza, to be exact.
"Huh. Never thought you would be a Esther...", Eliza muttered.
"What-?", I asked, "What is going on? Where am I?"
Eliza leaned over onto the arms of the chair I was tied to.
"You've been kidnapped, buddy.", Eliza smirked and turned away. I was shaking, but I knew I couldn't show fear.
"Why are you doing this?", I swallowed the lump in my throat.
"Oh, I have been doing this for YEARS, babe. I never expected to see you sitting in that chair, though. I mean, I'm glad because hurting you will be a lot sweeter...", She grinned and left the room.
I looked around. Everything was like a hospital room. Sterile. Monotone. I felt the straps at the back of my chair. Huh. Leather. I tried my best to keep in touch with my senses so I could figure out a way to escape.
"God d*** it!", I said, accidentally get a splinter on the wood chair. My shouts were silenced by quiet shuffling in the hallway.
"Who's there?", I called out. A boy with brown curly hair walked out of the shadows, pushing a cart to me.
"I'm John...", He smiled apologetically. That smile..sort of was comforting.
"Alex-..", I eyed him. Not because I was interested or anything, but because he was my kidnapper. I mean, not that I was UN-interested.
"I just like to tell people a few things before I have to run the tests on them.", John bit his lip, "I am also being held captive..I hate doing these tests on people, but this was the only way I could avoid getting killed. I just want to say I'm sorry."
I noticed a single tear fall from his eye. This was a genuine apology....
"It's alright. I understand.", I smiled at him. He wiped away the tear and lifted up a few syringes.
"Do you want me to explain these or do you not want to know?", He asked, giving me a look that said 'you don't want to know'. But I did. I did want to know.
"Um, yeah, I kind of do want to know. Why, of all people, was I choosen?", I asked. He immediately looked uncomfortable.
"Long story short-...very bad people know about a group of people destined to be very good people that will ruin their ultimate plan.", He leaned in close, " The world isn't what it seems, Alex..."
He noticed the barely an inch of distance between our faces and blushed.
"I'm not supposed to tell you a lot...", John picked up a syringe and placed it on my arm. It was a blood red.
"Because you're cute-..", He blushed intensely, "I'm going to explain in detail. You are a part of a group called the Esther's. You didn't choose to be in this group. It's pretty much a really s***** lottery. You were randomly selected to be born into the group. So, there is a group of people that I REALLY can't tell you the name of. They are bad people. Esther's are good people....and Alex...if I tell you something, will you believe me?"
I stared at him. I couldn't trust him.........as much as I wanted to...
"Yes..I'll try.", I said.
"Okay, well..there's magic. I know it sounds insane but its true. Esther's have a type of light magic that can destory their plan. I don't even know what their plan is. That's some top secret s*** right there. So, the bad people are thinking about ways to get rid of the Esther's and, even worse, use them to complete their plan. All I know about their plan is that these tests have something to do with it. I dont know what, but I know it does.", He said.
What. The. Actual. F***? I glared at him.
"Dude, I can't believe you. I actually was starting to think maybe you were on my side-..", I shook my head.
"I'm telling you the truth, Alex. I'm telling you more than I have ever told anyone. I promise you. It's the truth. I have been here since I was eight...I know things.", John sighed.
"Alright. Get on with it.", I waved him to start with the tests.
He slowly injected the red fluid into my arm. My arm burned like h3ll and I screamed.
"WHAT IS THAT?!", I demanded. "Its the test to see if you have the special blood of a Esther. It was made to burn Esther's where it is injected.", He checked off something on his clipboard.
He pulled out a lemon yellow syringe and I flinched.
"I know, baby, I'm sorry-..", His eyes opened wide. He just called me 'baby'. We both blushed and ignored it.
He sighed and injected it. Nothing happened.
"Hey, Alex-...", John waved.
(Okay I swear to God, I had no control over this. Don't use this against me.)
"WHOO! LETS PARTY! PARTEEE!!!", I yelled, giddily.
John shut his eyes, shook his head, and took a note.
"That wasn't good, Alex.", John said, tapping his pen on chair.
Slowly, the vaccine was wearing off and I was going back to normal.
"What was supposed to happen?", I asked.
"You were supposed to radiate light from your hands....that did not happen..", John cupped his chin in his hand.
"Isn't that good? Doesn't that mean I'm not an Ever and can leave?", I smiled.
"First off, its Esther. And no, this makes things worse for you. You...you are the leader of the Esther's. The god, if you will, of the Esther's. Your light magic cannot be forced out of you by any potions. You are the most powerful Esther...and in the prophecy, the main one that is going to defeat the bad people...", John looked down at his Van's.
"This is a..lot..to take in.", I clutched the armrests of the chair.
"Yeah, I get that. I am going to let you rest before we do the rest of the tests. Let me take you to the cell.", John let me out of the chair, "Can I trust you not to escape?"
I nodded and yes, I did contemplate escaping, but I saw how strong...and tough... John was and knew I was no match.
