Chapter 50
I walk outside the doors of the school hall with a racing heart as other students run past me screaming profanities while throwing their belongings in the air. My eyes fail to find Nate or
Emily, so I lean against a locker close to the entrance and wait with vigilant eyes for one of them to show up.
My eyes catch David who is leaving with a bunch of guys who are laughing at the top of their lungs, his eyes accidentally land on my own stopping his own laughter. He says some rushed words to them before jogging over to me cautiously.
"How was it?" I ask leaning on the metal as he runs his hand through his hair that grew out quiet a bit.
"Good actually." He says with a warm smile. "My dad got me a tutor and I have a lot of free time now, so I think I'll get into some university. You?"
"Good." I say returning the smile, he opens his mouth to say something but Emily's voice cuts through the air as she runs out the hall with a dazzling smile.
"I'll see you around Andy." He says fading into the crowd before I could respond. My attention is redirected to Emily as she hugs me tightly forcing a smile onto my lips.
"I'm guessing it went well." I say chuckling slightly as she pulls back, with her hands still gripping my shoulders.
"Far from it, I definitely failed!" She says with a wide smile while my eyebrows knit together in frustration. "Don't look at me like that, I can barely pass a maths test and I'm expected to ace the fucking SATs. How about no."
"Em.." I start but she places a finger on my lips stopping me.
"It's fine Andy, I never wanted to go to university. I'll be perfectly happy in our little town taking over the family biz." She says with a smile that's meant to comfort me but only worries me instead. I just nod to avoid a full scale argument and look back towards the open doors to find a few people strolling out.
"He was one of the first out." She says suddenly making me frown. "Call him."
I don't ask any questions as I search through my bag for my new phone before dialing his number which I'd somehow learnt by heart. It rings a few times making my worry grow as it goes to voicemail. I knew he said he'd check the letter after the exam but I thought he'd take me with him or at least say something to me first. Emily rubs my shoulder before indicating to me that she had to bolt, I nod as she runs down the now empty halls. I call Nate's phone again but after a few rings it goes to voicemail. I keep ringing as I speed walk through the halls, I wouldn't be seeing until graduation night. It was summer for us but I couldn't celebrate like I'm sure Emily, David and all our classmates were surely doing right now, Nate took precedence in my mind and I could only think about finding him.
Walking out through the back parking lot, I walk through the partying crowds and head to the back where I find David talking to Nate. I stop in my track as I watch the two converse for the first time after everything that happened with Emily. It had been weighing on Nate not being able to talk to his best friend and even though what he did to Emily was wrong, I often encouraged him to speak to David. They were best friends long before us and I didn't want it on my conscience that he lost his best friend because he sided with Emily which was truly commendable. The two share a laugh switching from their serious expressions before Nate's eyes dart over to me, the fill with joy as he motions me over. David says something to him before hug quickly and David slips into his car, driving away after giving me a wave.
"Hey." He says hugging me, pressing a kiss to my forehead before digging into his pocket and taking out his phone. "Someone's been blowing up my phone and I ha-......why were you calling me so much?"
"Couldn't find you." I say with a weak smile before tiptoeing and giving him a quick kiss that makes him hum in delight. "How'd you do?"
"We'll have to wait for my results and see." He says wiggling his eyebrows while I frown. "What about you?"
"Great." I say with a beaming smile, I giggle as he attacks me with quick kisses while whisper words of how proud he was. "How do you want to celebrate? Movie, restaurant, tattoo?" I tease.
"Movie at my place sounds fine." He says before opening the door for me. I slide in laughing at how he chose to ignore my tattoo suggestion, I decide to hold back the flood of questions I had prepared to ask about David and just enjoy the ride.
"What movie will we watch, we've seen them all." I say as he drives out the school's parking lot with his fingers tapping along to the song the radio was playing.
"You feeling Sci-Fi or you want to cry like two little bitches?" He asks making me laugh at his bluntness.
"I wouldn't mind seeing you cry." I say chuckling as he glances at me with a smirk.
"Lion King it is!" I let out a series of laughter as he smiles at my reaction, I felt so free now that I didn't have the burden of studying weighing on my shoulders. We sing along to the radio songs as we drive with wide smiles and before I know it, we're walking up the stairs to his front door. I great his parents before playing a little with the twins before heading to Nate's room where I find him sitting on the edge of the bed with the letter in hand with the envelope lying at my feet. I close the door before walking over and sitting opposite him at his desk's chair wanting to give him some space.
He looks up at me after a while before running his hand through his hair, I watch him carefully as he offers one of his hands for me. I take it as he slowly pulls me into his lap, wrapping one of his arms around me so he can hold the fragile paper with both his hands.
"Read it." He says leaning his head against me as I hook my arms around his neck.
I was going to start this with Dear Nathaniel but I don't like that, it sounds too formal. I was going to go with, What's up! But I didn't like that either, too relaxed so I decided on Hello.
Hello Nathaniel,
You should know this is my fifty third time writing this, it'll truly suck if you don't read it. In the off chance that you are reading this, I wanted to say a few things. For one, I did give you up by my own free will. I didn't do it because I had a gun to my head or because my parents wanted to disown me if I didn't. I did it because my life was a shitshow and bringing a baby into it wouldn't have been fair. I got you a nice family that gave you the home I couldn't provide for you. You may argue that that didn't matter and it would've been better if we were together but it wouldn't have been. This I know for sure.
I've spoken to you a few times over the phone and all have been short, with you telling me to fuck off. You're a hot headed kid, I like that, you'll need it. This world sucks ass Nathaniel. It's a never ending trial run of hell and it'll eat you alive if you don't stand up to it yourself.
I remember the first time I saw you after all these years, I had been trying to track you down for months with no leads. I'd just moved to this town, after a week of setting up the clinic, I went down to the bookstore. I was looking through some isles for a cook book when I accidentally walked into the romance isle. I knew it was you because you look just like you're father, a splitting image honestly. You've got his astounding height, jet black hair and those mischievous eyes that got all that girls in trouble. You were looking down at that sweet little girl, even though you were clearly bored you had a sparkle in your eyes that showed something else.
Since then I've seen you around town a few times but you always look so angry. Ready to pounce one anyone with a rage so blinding you clearly can't see it. But never when you're with her, with that girl you're happy.
I'm not asking you to forgive me or to love me like a mother, because I'm not you're mother. I'm the lady that gave birth to you that wants to talk to you. Even if it's just once, I want to have a conversation that exceeds the point of fuck you. I know this isn't what you'd want it a letter but it's the best I've got.
My names Elizabeth Wellington, I work in the veterinary clinic in town and my doors will always be open for you.
I fold up the letter as I look down at Nate whose already looking at me with clearly confused eyes.
"She's weird." He says as I run my hand through his hair. I don't respond simply running my hand through his hair as I stare at him while he looked out the window. "How do you even respond to something like that? I was expecting some shitty apology for giving me up, but she didn't even do that. She just.... just.."
"Talked." I say making his eyes dart up to mine. "She just talked."
"She's spot on about the anger." He says chuckling sarcastically. "She doesn't even know me and she knows that I'm better with you around."
"And I'm better with you."
"I can't even be mad at her for this." He says with a sigh pointing toward the letter. We stay silent for a while before he takes a deep breath. "I want to talk to her."
"You sure?"
"I'd be lying if I said I wasn't intrigued." He says with a weak smile. I press my lips to his, he hums in satisfaction as he pulls me closer. I relish in the feeling of his lips against mine as we tighten each other's grasp on the other.
