Chapter 39
"Andy, I am not your personal therapist! And you brought a friend this time!" Zane exclaims leaning over the counter staring at Matt and I.
"I'll get you ice cream." I say with a nervous smile.
"That won't cut it anymore babe." Zane says seriously grabbing his magazine.
"Two! Two tubs!" I say making him freeze. I can see the mental battle he is having as his eye twitches and his fist curls. His eyes constantly dart between the freezer and us.
"God damn it!" He shouts making me fist pump triumphantly, "this is blackmail or some form of torture!" He proclaims as I quickly get his first tub of vanilla for him. When I return he snatches it with a grunt before digging in, I motion Matt to climb over the counter with me.
He follows silently before propping down in the chair next to me, he had heavy bags under his eyes and looked dead, if I'm being honest. I skipped school to help him through this whole situation with Chase. Helping him somehow turned to going to Zane, he seemed capable of fixing stuff without even trying.
"So what can I do for you today?" Zane asks a lot more welcoming than he did with his annoyed tone earlier.
"My friend, Matt, needs your expertise." I say motioning to a worn out Matt.
"Short version, my boyfriend left me a few months back without reason or explanation. He just disappeared, he showed up suddenly asking to talk. I ignored him and then he came to my house and outed me to my dad who hates gays and I haven't gone home since."
"This is way above my pay grade." Zane mutters licking the plastic spoon.
"I think he should just go talk it out with his dad, but he doesn't want to." I say softly.
"He's right not to. We all know how homophobic pricks are, if your dad is one chances are he won't want to talk it out. If you're lucky, he'd accept you and all that rainbow goodness. Pun not intended but I'm pleased so we're going to work with it." He says chuckling and for the first time since I've been with Matt he actually smiled a little.
"So don't talk to my dad?" He asks fiddling with his fingers.
"I think you should go straight up to him and tell him to taste the rainbow or fuck off." Zane says with amused eyes and excitement that was oddly contagious.
"And if they kick me out? What would I do?" Matt asks making Zane beam.
"You come work with me dumbass. You can stay with me until you get back on your feet." He says way too kindly.
"Zane what's your play here?" I ask narrowing my eyes at the demon in disguise.
"What?! I'm being nice."
"Exactly. You're an asshole. You crush children's sand castles for your own amusement. You wouldn't even talk to us without being bribed. So what angle are you playing at?" I ask again.
"None! I'm not a complete dick you know. If you don't want my help then fine." He says with a slight pout which he masks with annoyance.
"I'm fine with it." Matt pipes in making me frown. "Would your boss be okay with hiring me though?"
"Boss?" He asks in surprise looking at both of us. "Guys. I own the shop."
"Shut up!" I say in disbelief.
"Why do you think I'm always here dimwit?" He says chuckling.
"I don't know! I thought you were a college dropout who worked here!" I reply guiltily while Matt snickers quietly.
"That's real nice babe." He says sarcastically, "and I thought we were friends."
"I'm sorry." I say apologetically.
"Yeah whatever."
"Wait." I say coming to my senses. "So you mean I've been buying you ice cream that you already own."
"Not once did I ask you for ice cream. I was always offered and who would I be if I didn't take free food." He says making me growl.
"I seriously hate you."
"I love you too babe." He says with a smirk making me even angrier.
-------
"Are you ready?" I ask Zane as we approach our neighborhood.
"Yeah." He says wiping his hands on his jeans. "Definitely. Just going to go there and tell me dad I'm gay and to deal with it, best case he accepts me and everything is fine. Worst case I'm kicked out and I go live with your hot friend Zane."
"You'll be find Matt and you could always live with me. You know my parents love you." I reply quickly.
"I would hate to live right next to the parents who despise me." He replies sternly as we walk up his driveway. "I'm okay, everything's okay."
"Breath Matty." I instruct as we stop in front his front door. "I'm here for you." He smiles weakly at me before taking a deep breath and knocking on the door. It's deafeningly silent for a while before the door swings open revealing Matt's dad. His eyes grew wide at the sight of Matt as a hundred and one emotions flooded through them.
"Matt..." he says after a while. "Wh-"
"Look dad! I'm gay! I'm so gay, it hurts. It hurts that I've had to pretend to be something I'm not for my whole life. It hurts that I moved across the country so I could be who I am without worrying about how you'd react. I'm as straight as a fruit role up. I'm a gay, eighteen year old boy who enjoys taking it up the ass and that's not going to change. I know you hate gays and that sucks, but I like dick and if you hate me then, then.... fuck you!" He exclaims making me gasp as I cover my mouth in shock. His chest continues to heave up and down as I stare at him in disbelief.
"Matt. I don't hate you." His dad says after a while. "I can't hate my son."
I see the weight fall off Matt's shoulders as he stares at his father with watery eyes.
"You don't hate me?" He says with a wobbly voice, the intensity from earlier now gone.
"Of course not." He says making me smile as Matt starts crying. He steps forward to give his dad a hug but his dad takes a few back dodging it. I clench my fist at the blatant disgust in his eyes as Matt's joyous tears turn to ones of pain. "I don't hate you. But I can't live with you, knowing that you're one of them."
"D-dad.." Matt's voice quivers as he stares at his father in disbelief.
"Get your stuff and leave." He says before turning around and disappearing into the house
"Matt..." I say softly as I look up at my broken friend. The terror, pain and sorrow obvious in his eyes as he continues to cry at the door.
"L-let me go get some clothes." He says before rushing into the home without another word. I stand their in disbelief as I try to wrap my head around everything that just happened. Matt returned quickly not even looking back in his house as he rushed down the steps.
"Wait." He continues walking "Stop!" I instruct making him freeze, he turns back to face me with a saddened glare. I rush into the house searching desperately for that sick bastard who called himself a man.
"Andy stop." Matt hisses as he follows me into his home. "What are you doing?" I find his dad sitting in their living room reading a book peacefully like he didn't just disown his only child.
"You!" I shout rushing towards him, I grab his book and throw it across the room, ignoring the pain the action just caused me.
Rest easy dear book.
"You sick son of a bitch!" I shout surprising myself. "You think it's okay to do what you just did! To tell your son, to leave because he likes men instead of women! You're sick that's what you are! You're a disgusting piece of shit!" I shout as Matt tugs on my arm, but my eyes never leave his dad's frightened ones.
"It's okay Andy." Matt says with a weak smile as he wipes away his tears.
"It's not okay! This is not okay!" I shout releasing myself from Matt's grasp before punching his father in the jaw. "It would've been better if you told him from the beginning instead of doing that sick little game you pulled. Giving him hope and joy that you didn't hate him only to rip it away in a split second! You disgust me with your sick, unrighteous principles. So he likes dick! Big deal! I bet you only hate gays cause some guy fucked you and dumped you!" I finish huffing and puffing as I tried to catch my breath. He stared at me with stunned eyes as he held his bruised jaw, I sighed triumphantly before turning to Matt.
He was smiling at me with one of those beautiful, genuine smiles that told me he was okay. I grabbed his hand and left the wretched house only to meet his mom at the door, I knew she heard everything. She kept her head down not daring to say a word, but she didn't have to. We knew she was on his dad's side.
"Hag." I spit as we pass by her and leave the house. I continue to walk in my fast, vexed pace until Matt stopped me suddenly pulling me into a hug. I hug him back immediately as he clenches onto me tightly. I feel his body shake as he starts to cry into my shirt, I hug him even tighter letting him know someone was here for him.
"Thank you." He says in between sobs.
"I'd do anything for you." I say softly as he pulls back at me with a running nose and face wet from all his tears.
"I love you." He says crying again. I knew he meant it platonically and smiled.
"I love you too Matty."
