Darkest Night
*James*
I shower and head to work, anxious to see Julia now. I know she has a practice session with Nate Hollan, so I patiently wait for her and do my job. Every time the lobby doors open, I'm hopeful it's her.
But then, the elevator door opens. Shit. Something happened. Julia looks like she's seen a ghost. She's in some kind of shock like something happened. I quickly hang up the phone on a customer and rush to the elevator.
I throw my arm out to stop the elevator door from closing and take Julia's hand, walking her out to the hall.
"Julia! Are you ok? What's the matter? What happened??"
"Some...... Someone... Someone broke into my room. James, someone tore apart my room!"
"What? On the 4th floor?" I quickly walk her to the front desk. "We have to call the cops!" How the hell would someone break into her room. She's on the 4th floor. The safest floor in the entire building!
I try to stay calm and sit Julia down on my chair behind the desk while I call 911. Julia is clearly in shock.
"Julia. Say something!" I say and hear the panic in my voice.
"Sorry, what?" Her hands are shaking in mine
"Are you hurt? Are you ok?"
"No, I'm fine. I'm fine."
I push her hair away from her face and tuck strands behind her ears. "Oh, thank God. Let me get you some water." I grab her water and try to stay calm for her until the police come.
Once they arrive, they take all Julia's basic information and I all my manager to let her know what's going on and to send more employees to the front desk. Then, one of the officers has me lead them to Julia's room while she stays downstairs.
Unbelievable. Her room is completely trashed. How the hell did this happen on the 4th floor? I just can't wrap my brain around it. The police are also confused. They are aware that the 4th floor is designated to keep celebrities safe. They let me go back down, and they stay to do whatever needs to be done.
"Are you sure you're ok?" I kneel down in front of Julia.
"I'm ok. Just a little freaked out. I don't know who would do something like this! I don't even know anyone here."
"The cops will figure it out." I assure her.
"Wait. There's gotta be cameras or some kind of footage. We can tell them to look at that! Then they will be able to see-"
"No, there aren't any cameras." I cut her off. I'm not really supposed to talk about the 4th floor, but she needs to know there are no cameras.
"What do you mean? There's cameras all over this place."
"Not on the 4th floor."
"Why wouldn't there be any cameras on the 4th floor? This is a Marriott, I'm sure if Maintenance knew one was broken, they'd fix it right away." Julia gives me a dumbfounded look.
"Yeah, no. Not on the 4th floor. I'll explain later." I whisper and pat her leg a few times. I will have to tell her, but I need to check with Paul first.
The hotel phone rings, and Cheryl, my coworker at the far end of the lobby, takes the call for me.
"Mr. Gallo -" Cheryl calls me. I head over to take the call.
"Mr. Gallo, huh? Bout time, I knew your last name." Julia smirks a little before I talk into the receiver.
It's Paul. I have to play it cool, so I give him a bunch of "Yes sir, no sir" cryptic shit while he talks to me. I'm to move Julia to a different room but keep her on the 4th floor. Someone will pack her stuff for me before we go up.
"We are going to switch your room, and I will help you pack up all your stuff." I talk while entering the new information on the computer.
"Great, can we make it on a different floor? One with working cameras this time?"
"Sorry, I can't do that."
"What do you mean you can't do that? James... What's going on?" Her voice cracks, and I turn and look at her with sympathy. I can't get into it all right now. But I will once I get the ok.
I lean in close and whisper in her ear to reassure her I will fill her in. "I will explain everything later, ok? Trust me." I make her another key and fill out the paperwork to switch her rooms.
Julia stands up and decides to sit on the sofa in the corner of the lobby to make a phone call. When she's done, she hangs up and rushes back over to me, clearly nervous.
"James, can you please tell me what's -" Julia starts talking, but my attention is now on Paul, who comes into the lobby. Did Nate call Paul to be her bodyguard now?? Is it that bad, or is he being overprotective? Something doesn't sit well with me.
Paul comes to the front desk and gives me a nod.
"Which room." Paul asks
"Move her to 460. We just have to move her stuff in there. We can do it now."
"Follow me, Miss." The brick house of a man looks down at Julia.
"Follow YOU? I'm not following ANYONE until someone tells me what the fuck is happening!" Julia bursts out. The last person she should be giving a hard time is Paul. I can see she's on the verge of crying now. I feel awful but if Nate thinks she needs the protection, then she needs to follow Paul.
"Please, James can you just tell me what's going on? Please?"
"Not right now, ok? Just follow Paul." I shake my head.
"YOU know Paul???" I feel like I'm going to vomit. " I can't stay here. You guys are all freaking me out. I feel like I'm going crazy!" Julia takes her keys out like she is gonna bolt out of the hotel, but Paul grabs her keys first and guides her to the elevator. I feel physically sick watching this all play out and unable to talk to her or tell her more.
"This way Miss." Paul escorts Julia and she looks back at me. Absolutely terrified.
My mind is racing. Who the hell would trash her room. A room on the 4th floor??
