42: The Things We Do For JB
WHILST POPE and Kiara were actually being useful in the operation of trying to help John B, Aurora was searching around the Cut for JJ. She figured he would've visited JB and come up with a plan, she just wanted to help. Rory threw away her cigarette on the pavement, before she spotted an Ambulance in the distance. She squinted at the familiar number plate, before walking towards the window.
The driver flinched as Rory knocked on the window, and her eyes widened as she recognised the face of her brother. JJ motioned for her to run around to climb into the passenger seat, as he leant over the seats to open the door for her.
Aurora closed the door behind her, "Can I ask what you're doing in Pedophile-Rick's ambulance?"
"I borrowed it to help John B." JJ explained, as his eyes darted on his surroundings in worry. He frowned, "And Rick said not to call him that."
Rory scoffed sarcastically, "Well, it's not my fault he perved on girls. So therefore, he's our cousin Pedophile-Rick." She paused, watching JJ intensively, "Who are you looking for?"
"Cops." JJ replied quickly, using the side-mirror to look behind the vehicle.
"Cops?" Aurora repeated.
"Yes, Cops. Police, Pigs, People In Uniform." JJ listed quickly.
"I know who the Cops are." Rory rolled her eyes, "I'm asking why you're looking for them. JJ, what have you done?"
"Am I a licensed Ambulance driver?" JJ asked sarcastically, "Didn't think so."
"I thought you said you borrowed it, like, Pedophile-Rick let you take it." Aurora replied, as her expression filled with realisation. She buried her face in her hands, "JJ, you stole his Ambulance?"
JJ disagreed, "Well, when you put it like that-"
The sound of sirens cut him off, as the two siblings quickly looked at each other in panic. JJ peered behind him to see a Police Car slowly approaching the Ambulance,
"Get in the back." JJ whispered, practically pushing his sister over the front seats, "Get in the back. Hurry!"
"I am hurrying!" Rory whisper-yelled, as her body thudded onto the floor. She pushed herself into the shadows of the back-seats, "We're so dead, J. We're so fucking dead."
"Shut up." JJ shooed her away, "Shut up, he's coming."
"Play it cool." Rory whispered quickly, before covering her own mouth with her hand, as she listened to the Car engine stop outside of the vehicle.
"I hate it when it's slow like this, you know?" The Cop stated to JJ, who was hesitant to reply.
He cleared his throat, making his voice sound deeper than it actually was, "Tell me about it, man."
"Hey, what happened to Ricky?" The Cop asked curiously, "He bang out?"
"Something like that." JJ exhaled deeply, before a women on the radio spoke,
"One Three. We got a unknown at KC Detention."
JJ grabbed the radio, "Uh, yeah, ten-four. I'll be right there. Thank you so much, uh... Over." He turned the keys to the ambulance, "Duty calls. I'll see you later, Officer. Uh, you have a good night, though, okay?"
"Hold up." The Cop replied, and Aurora felt her heart drop to the pit of her stomach. He continued, "I got nothing to do. I'll pace you."
The police car turned on its sirens, as the Cop started driving- expecting JJ to follow. Aurora let out a breath that she didn't know she'd been holding, "Holy shit, don't follow him."
"Don't follow him? I have to follow him." JJ argued, as he started driving behind the car. He muttered to himself, "Come on, John B."
"What's even the plan?" Rory asked, as she stayed curled up in the back.
"At exactly 11pm, he's gonna have a brutal attack of acute appendicitis." JJ explained.
Rory frowned, "Why appendicitis?"
"I don't know, it's the first thing that came to my head." JJ shrugged, as Aurora sighed. He continued, "Don't mock the plan, Rory. Although I can't see you right now, I can practically hear you shaking your head right now."
Rory stopped shaking her head in confusion. She frowned, "I'm not mocking the plan. I'm just... okay, I was mocking the plan."
"Well, don't." JJ shot back, "Just leave this to the professionals, okay?"
"It sounds easier said than done." Rory stated, "What's Plan B?"
"Uh, run." JJ answered, but it sounded more like a question as doubt laced his voice.
"Run?" Rory scoffed, "Is that it?"
JJ huffed, "It's Plan B. We only run if everything else goes to shit..."
"Which it probably will, given the circumstances of us sitting in a stolen ambulance." Rory finished sarcastically. She sighed, "The things we do for JB."
After the drive to the Prison, JJ and Aurora waited nervously in the ambulance. Rory's limbs were going numb from being squashed into the small cupboard in the back of the vehicle- it was JJ's idea, of course.
"J, my legs are going numb!" Aurora whisper-yelled, as her body tangled in the small dark space, "I can't feel or see anything!"
"Shh, be quiet." JJ whispered quickly, as the sound of the vehicle door opened and his voice became distant, "Stay there, Rory. Don't move until I say."
Rory panicked, "Don't leave, JJ, where are you-"
The sound of the door slamming behind her brother cut her off, as Aurora's body began to sweat. She looked around the darkness, her eyes adjusting to the gloom to see the emptiness around her. She dug in her pockets for some cigarettes, but she had gone through a whole pack in just 3 days. Rory shut her eyes, thinking of better times and hoping for John B's appendicitis to hurry up.
A while had passed and Rory's eyes widened as the sound of the back doors opening shook the vehicle. She relaxed when she heard JJ's voice, exhaling a quiet breath of relief that his plan worked. She hoped it did anyway.
The vehicle started moving and, as expected, JJ opened the cupboard that Rory was curled up in. Unexpectedly, he covered her mouth, not letting his sister speak. She frowned, pushing his hand away so she could finally breathe. JJ pointed to the driver's seat, as Rory noticed an Officer was driving. Her gaze traveled to a sick man laying on the bed next to them,
"Where's John B?" Rory mouthed, confusion and worry filling her expression.
"I repeat, a 10-63 in progress. Do you copy?" The radio spoke.
"Is everything okay, officer?" JJ asked from the back, and in reply, the Officer slid the window shut, separating himself from them.
Rory held JJ's shoulder's, shaking him out of the trance he was in, "What's happening, J?"
Her brother took his cap off in distress, flipping it and putting it back on. He stood up, peering out of the back window as the distant sound of sirens wailed louder. JJ whispered, "The plan didn't work."
"What-What about Plan B?" Aurora stuttered in distress, "What about the run part?"
"Unless you want to jump out of a moving vehicle and get caught by the Cops, I suggest not." JJ replied sarcastically, as he grabbed his phone from his pocket, "Come on, Kie, I need a miracle."
Rory crouched down, peering out of the window to see more police cars following the ambulance. Her mind flashed her back to Plumb, saying how she was next in jail, and using Rory's addictions against her. Rory couldn't go to jail. She shook her head, not realising her breathing had become heavier.
She turned to JJ, who had now stood up. He hit the wall with his fist, "Fuck!"
Rory flinched, her body frozen, "JJ, calm down." Her voice became shaky, "Please."
A tear rolled down JJ's cheek, as he sat up against the wall in acceptance that he had lost. Aurora refused to join him, picking the lock of the back doors with a hair grip. Suddenly, both JJ and Rory flew forward as the vehicle jolted to a stop. The distant, yet familiar, voices of Pope and JJ spoke,
"Sorry, it was an accident."
"She just got her license."
Aurora snapped into realisation that this was their only time to escape, as she she unlocked the back doors and pulled JJ's t-shirt to follow her. They both sprinted into the shadows of the forest, as JJ led her to Kie's car which would be waiting on the other side.
As expected, the two waited impatiently in the vehicle as JJ and Rory chucked themselves in the back seats. Kie drove off, as the two tried to catch their breath.
"I'm seriously not even gonna ask." Kiara's mother instincts took charge, as she gave a disappointing stare through the rear-view mirror.
"He busted the wrong guy out of jail." Aurora panted.
"Sue me. At least I was trying." JJ argued, "I'm gonna end up in jail anyway."
"Don't say that." Rory snapped, kicking his leg gently but hard enough to hurt. Aurora hated when JJ thought like that, although she did too.
Who could blame them?
