15: A Bad Analogy
AURORA HAD always loved the sky, especially the stars. She was more of a night person, and always wished she was named after a star. Her mother chose the name Aurora, it had something to do with her great-great-great nan. Her nickname, Rory, came from JJ (of course) and the girl found it tolerable.
After the escape from Midsummers, the Pogues had camped out in the forest, not to far from the Château. John B and Pope had made a fire, which they all gathered around to warm themselves up.
"Hey, guys." Pope said, breaking the silence, my dad's already gonna kill me. So what's this mandatory meeting about?"
JJ instantly looked at John B, "You might as well tell him, man, before we're gaffed."
"How come JJ knows?" Rory questioned, as she continued to stargaze, "Out of everyone."
John B hesitated, "Just listen. You ready for this?"
"Yeah." Kie prompted, as she gave John B a worried look.
John B took a breath, "So, the gold never went down with the Royal Merchant."
"Here we go again with this." Pope rolled his eyes in annoyance, as Rory smirked to herself.
JJ interrupted excitedly, "Wait, hear him out."
"It's been here the whole time." John B smirked, "It's on the Island."
"Are you serious?" Kie questioned, "Oh my God."
"I'd like to voice my skepticism." Pope deadpanned.
John B cleared his throat, "I'm sure you would, Pope, but can I please present you with my evidence, sir?"
Pope sighed, "Proceed."
"Alright, in my backpack, I have a letter from Denmark Tanny." John B explained, "He was a slave that survived the Royal Merchant wreck. Check this out..."
John B passed around a folded up letter from his pocket, which Kiara started to read. He continued,
"Okay, slaves weren't mentioned as crew members on the ship, but my dad, he found the complete manifest. That was his big discovery." He paused, "So, Tanny used the gold from the Merchant to buy his freedom. After that, he brought his farm because, drum roll please, that farm is... TannyHill Plantation."
"TannyHill?" Kie questioned in surprise.
"Yeah. So, after that, he used the money to free even more slaves, and then he sold a shit-ton of rice, which pushed off the white-planters, and then they decide to lynch him." John B explained, "So, on the day they were coming to get him, he writes his letter to his son as a farewell, and in the last line of that letter he leaves a coded message about where to find the Gold."
"Where?" Kiara questioned, as she passed the letter to Pope.
"Harvest the wheat in parcel nine, near the water." John B replied, "Except, there's no wheat. You see, wheat is code for gold."
"Holy shit." Pope smiled.
"All we need is an original survey map of the property, and we've found the gold." John B exclaimed.
"Okay, so this might have a small chance of being actually true." Pope replied excitedly.
Kie added, "Dude, it's like King Tut!"
"So, what's the plan?" Pope questioned curiously.
John B nodded, "Right. So, Sarah Cameron's coming tonight. She'll bring an original survey map-"
"Hold on." Aurora interrupted, as she sat up, "Did I hear you correctly? You said Sarah Cameron?"
"I second that." Kie added, "Why Sarah?"
John B cautiously explained, "She got me into the archives in Chapel Hill yesterday, and that's where I got the letter."
"This is gonna be good." JJ mumbled sarcastically.
"Shut up, JJ." Aurora rolled her eyes in annoyance, then looked at John B, "You mean, you and the Kook Princess went out... together? Are you fucking serious?"
John B hesitated, "Yeah, urm-"
"He was mackin' on her." JJ interrupted.
"I wasn't macking." John B sighed.
"You were totally macking Sarah Cameron." JJ repeated, as Rory's face burned with anger.
"I wasn't macking on her, okay?" John B reassured, "I was using her for access."
"You got access, alright." JJ smirked, as Aurora grimaced.
"Did you tell her about the treasure?" Kiara questioned.
John B defended, "I was trying to get into the archives."
"Is that a yes?" Kiara scoffed, "You let a Kook in on our secret? What about Pogue Life? What about the t-shirt company, bro?"
"I was using her for information!" John B defended.
"Hmm, why don't I believe you?" Rory questioned sarcastically.
"I'm trying to make us filthy rich here." John B reasoned, "Okay, so we can pay off a boat, or send Pope to autopsy school to study dead bodies. Look, you guys know me. Do I look like the type of person to fall for Sarah Cameron?"
"Yes! Yes, you do." Aurora snapped, as she rubbed her face with her hands, "You don't know her, John. She's- she's like... a cheating, lying bitch. You'll fall in love with her and then she'll cheat on you like she did with me-"
"Maybe she's changed." John B shot back, "People change, Rory. You, of all people, should know that."
"What is that suppose to mean?" Aurora frowned, as she stood up quickly, "You know, what? Forget it. Fall in love with Sarah Cameron. See if I give a shit."
John B sighed, "Rory, I didn't mean-"
"Forget it, John B." Aurora snapped.
The truth was, Rory did care- A lot. John B, who she saw as a brother, was macking on her ex-girlfriend.
Aurora went to walk away, but JJ stopped her, turning her back around and guiding her back to her seat. It was obvious her brother cared for her, he didn't want her wandering the streets alone when she had just gotten clean again.
"Her brother did hit me in the back with a golf-club." Pope added.
"Rafe and Sarah are two different human beings." John B frowned.
JJ turned to Kie, "What did she do to you, exactly?"
Kiara hesitated, "She's like- like a spitting cobra. First, she blinds you, then-"
"This is a bad analogy." Pope shook his head with a deep sigh.
"Just listen to me!" Kie argued, "Whatever we gets, she's gonna try to take."

Later that night, the Pogues reluctantly followed John B as he drove them to Kildare State Park, where Sarah Cameron was supposedly going to share information with John B.
John B stopped everyone from exiting the van, "I think I'm going to do this one by myself... tonight."
"Seriously?" Kiara scoffed, as she shook her head.
"I just don't want to spook Sarah with the peanut gallery." John B replied.
Aurora scoffed, "I just don't understand why we're involving her at all. Do you remember what she did to me, John B?"
"I certainly do." JJ mumbled with a nod, as he raised his hand.
"Me too." Pope raised his hand, "She totally broke your heart."
"Exactly." Aurora nodded enthusiastically, "That is exactly why we should never ever trust her again."
"It's just like a business meeting." John B reasoned, "It's nothing serious."
"Nothing serious?" Kiara scoffed in disbelief, "Is that why you want to go alone?"
"Look, once what we get what we need, we cut her loose, alright?" John B explained, "Plus, we need the map."
"Just promise me nothing is going on between you two." Kiara sighed in defeat.
"I promise." John B replied, "Now, I'm gonna get on with business."
"While we sit here, in this hot-ass van." Pope finished, "While it's lightning."
The four Pogues were left in the van, in their suits and dresses from Midsummers. Aurora sat next to Kiara, as she rested her head on her shoulder, while JJ told Pope about Rafe attacking them at Midsummers- explaining every little detail.
"Did you guys here that?" Kiara sat up quickly.
"What?" JJ questioned, "It's just thunder."
"Please! Somebody help."
The four adjusted their posture, listening to the sobs of a girl. They all rushed out of the van, and ran over to two figures in the distance. As Aurora got closer, she made out John B's limp body on the floor, his limbs spread out.
However, leaning over him was Sarah Cameron. She sobbed into his chest loudly, repeating help over and over.
"Sarah, what happened?!" Pope shouted, as they arrived at the scene.
"I don't know what to do. He needs help. Topper shoved him." Sarah sobbed quickly.
"Where is he?!" JJ yelled.
"Please. Please. Just call somebody, I don't care who. Please, he needs help." Sarah continued to cry.
"Pope, get help!" JJ instructed, as the boy rushed back to the van.
"John B, stay with me." Sarah sobbed into his chest, "Don't leave me."
"Pope, come on!" JJ yelled.
Aurora stood frozen next to JJ, gripping onto his hand tightly. She stared at her friend, passed out on the sandy floor, before watching the Kook Princess. She cried heavily onto his body, gripping onto his shirt so hard her knuckles turned white.
Unexpectedly, Sarah Cameron pressed her lips onto John B's, which made Rory's heart stop. She felt her heart miss a beat, and placed her hand on her chest as she breathed shakily. She uncontrollably squeezed JJ's hand harder, as her brother turned to look at her. A single tear rolled down her cheek.
