Christmas Morn at the Rhums

On Xmas morn, we were released

Walking home through empty streets

In new fallen snow, up to our knees

Coats pulled tight in the morning breeze

While inside their houses, all snuggled and warm

Their eyes full of wonder on Xmas morn

The kids of the town, open presents many

Smiles and laughter and joy aplenty

While back at home, Dad's still under the tree

The twins diapers full of pooh and pee

Keith was back in the jelly again

And the snow in the house had reached the den

Uncle Prowse was shovelling the snow from inside

When Mom saw the mess, she nearly cried

The tree was laying across my Dad

And smashed to hell, were all the decorations it had

Beer bottles lined the counter and floor

And turkey grease stained the bathroom door

There was a trail of bones to where the dogs were

And a mess in the corner, the cat hocked up fur

Mom slumped on the couch, drink in her hand

I put on a record of her favourite oompah band

Mary went to change and feed the twins

And Kirk put the tree back up again

Uncle Prowse helped me get Dad in a chair

And Mom picked pine needles out of his hair

Keith swept up all the turkey bones

Nick cleaned up the living room all alone

Karen gathered the beer bottles empty

Kelly started making popcorn strings for the tree

Mom got some boas from her drawer

And wrapped them on the tree from ceiling to floor

Dad wrapped some string around chess pieces

That belonged to one of his niece's

And hung them on the branches, all

Then crunched up coloured paper, into decorative balls

Uncle Dave showed up with two floodlights

One green, one red, and what a sight

When he plugged them in behind the tree

The glowed through the branches, almost magically

Mom and Dad were holding the twins

And breakfast, Mary and Karen did begin

The smell of bacon and eggs in the air

And the fireplace burning warmly, over there

Kelly set the table with Christmas dishes

And fancy glasses with little fishes

Dad was now playing some Christmas tunes

The sound of guitar and voices filled the room

There was smiles and laughter all around

And though there were no gifts to be found

We had family and love within these four walls

And that is the greatest gift of all
