Gospel Version of Shakespeare's To Be or Not to Be
Before I start.. This was an assignment for English class while were reading Hamlet. It's about witnessing and sharing the Gospel with others. :)
To Speak or Not to Speak
To speak or not to speak - that is the question:
Whether 'tis nobler in the mind to suffer
The guilt and pain of an unopened mouth
Or to take arms against a sea of opinions
And, by opposing, offend them.
To cower, to silence-
No more - and by silence to say we end
The offense and discord of different beliefs
That souls are heir to-
'Tis a peace
Devoutly to be wished.
To hide, to conceal-
To conceal, perchance to evade scorn. Ay, there's the rub,
For in unspoken Gospel what ignorance may come,
When we have concealed all powerful Truth,
Must give us pause.
There's the conviction
That makes calamity of so long life.
For who would bear the whips and scorns of judgment,
Th' oppressor's sentiment,
The proud man's intolerance,
The pangs of despised fact,
The wit's delay,
The disdain of the populace,
And the rejection
That the bold proclaimer endures,
When he himself might his worldly acceptance secure
With silence?
Who would mockery and contempt bear,
To grunt and suffer under an unashamed tongue,
But the dread of a soul swallowed by death,
The suffering of the lost in Hell's fire
Secured by our silence,
Pricks the heart
And makes us rather bear those ills we have
Than see others devoid of the Gospel by which they canst be saved?
Thus Love dost make apostles of us all,
And thus the native hue of resolution
Is amplified o'er with the hope of Kingdom come,
In opportunities of fruit and harvest
With authority their voices rise to declare
And gain the boldness for action.
For in remembrance of our own salvation, to speak or not to speak is never a question.
