Courtly Love
Not long past, in a town just like this,
A Lady lived in the court of the King;
She had lacked for nothing in her life,
Yet she still wanted one thing.
Her life seemed empty, though it was full,
Gowns and silks and lacéd gloves,
Yet still the lady lacked one thing;
And that thing she lacked...was love.
She met a knight when in the Court,
Handsome, chivalrous, with armor shining bright;
He caught her eye and kept it there,
She lost her heart to the Handsome Knight.
They met and talked, and danced a while,
Yet the Knight never showed a preference
For any woman in the court;
He treated them all with reverence.
The Lady thought and then she prayed,
"I would give anything to see,
Him choose a woman or maiden to love;
And - O! If that woman were me!"
She was trapped by the eyes of the Court;
If she declared her love to the Knight,
Or tried to charm him as others did,
They would frown and whisper, "That's not right!"
And so through her days she waited,
She pined and prayed for wisdom and grace;
If she could not attract the handsome Knight,
She'd be a maiden all her days.
Sometimes their eyes met across the Court,
And her heart thrilled within her breast,
She thought, "He's seen me! He knows my thoughts!
Of all the Court, it's me he loves the best!"
Then the feeling would vanish quickly;
Yet in her heart she still wondered,
"Was it a vision - a trick of the light,
That made me feel this way?" She pondered.
So throughout the years the Lady sadly waited,
Too afraid of the stern, stiff Court to try;
To win by actions, words, and looks,
The heart of the Handsome Knight.
