The Moment I Knew

At night, sometimes I thank God for taking away my eyes from me because,
I knew if I had seen your face back then when you told me,
To forget and ignore what my heart screamed;
I would've believed that you meant it
You're so good at lying
Eyes wide open.

But no, I heard you.
And behind the smoothness of your tone
Was a tremor of pain, of hesitance
Of fear
And that was the moment I knew
There was more
Much, much more
To you than I originally knew
And that you had been hurt as many
If not more
Times than I have
And you don't want that pain again.

That was the moment I understood
This path was going to be treacherous
This love would be an uphill climb
But I also knew
It'll be absolutely worth it.

You have to prick your fingers
To get the best roses.
