Youngsters All
Written June 6, 1954 at age 59
When day is done, and darkness settles o'er the town;
When little children come inside,
Because the shadows lurk outside,
It's fun to watch them clown.
They're just as grown-ups aught to be, oblivious
To all the the threats of ills and debts,
And bickerings, and ill-placed bets;
Their laughter is hilarious.
When mother starts to bake and cook on baking day,
Her offspring take a tiny peek
To see if favors, which they seek,
May, somehow, fall their way.
They're in and out, and underfoot, and roundabout.
So mother wisely gives them chores
That, somehow, might take them outdoors.
But, not for long they're out.
They try to capture cookies; my G-Men are bold!
The want to nibble 'Frosty Ben'.
They try to capture Ginger Men.
How much can stomachs hold?
But, after all, they're lots of fun. They're undersung.
They keep us busy all the day
Repeating things they do and say.
They help to keep us young.
