The Happy Youth

Written June 2, 1921 at age 26

Twinkle, twinkle little stars,

Where you are I wish to be;

Singing misty music bars

Far across the misty sea.

When I'm all alone I greet

Ev'ry puff of wind and cloud,

And ev'ry creature that I meet,

And yell for joy most dreadful' loud.

I dart along a sagebrust trail

And hurdle greasewood, rock or ditch.

I sometimes want to skyward sail,

And reach my highest screamy pitch.

I can not leave the earth for long,

Nor can I run so very fast.

I can not sing in pretty song,

Nor say that I am not surpassed.

I'm little as the world is small;

I'm not much on the style.

I have my health, my youth, my all,

So I can smile and smile.
