Star Dreaming

Written June 6, 1921 at age 26

Last night as I sat star gazing,

Far off into dark blue space,

A meteor sped ablazing

As though on a death-bound race.

A message it seemed to carry

From some dying world afar,

As it flashed like a rainbow fairy,

Its hues of a dying star.

For a time its red-blue trailings

Set clear 'fore the Eastern hill;

Then fading to show its failings,

Died out ass to prove a will.

For some time I sat adreaming;

A vision I seemed to see.

A fairy took me abeaming

Far out through the misty sea.

We travelled faster than lightning;

We sped on rapid as thought.

I learned there is nothing fright'ning

About what the Lord had wrought.

After arriving at Nowhere,

On the last star close around,

I learned it is called Point Somewhere,

Just a tiny speck of ground.

Now that wee speck of a landing

Was full three light-years across.

Then how can our Earth keep standing?

To say, I am at a loss.

I saw where that meteor came from,

But the place was void of earth.

And the fairy said it hd sailed from

A land full of life and mirth.

I asked about a huge light ray

Which hastened toward our land.

He said the ray was on its way

Through part of the heav'nly band.

In a thousand years to come, sir,

That light will then just be seen,

Where you and I reside, sir,

On our little Earth, I mean.

So why should we worry of trifles,

When pleasures are rolling by?

Then let us bury our rifles,

And hate no more, says I.
