Savanna

Charles shoves pass tall grasses of the savanna, a capsule
In the heat, bugs, humidity, to observe nature's bustle―
Flies pester him, viceroy butterflies alight on milkweeds,
Skinks scurrying around like he wasn't there, he concedes
To this savanna. He spies a slight boulder to rest
His haunches for a while, he spies a quail on its nest
One of many animals, insects, reptiles, birds, snakes, and
Other species. The soil is rich, plenty of water is at hand.
Not good for much else but to protect. He's aweless.
The conservationist returns to his vehicle, calls the office.
Says, "Sarah, this is the perfect place to be preserved,
And set up as a reserve―let's get this land charted.
