I Eat the Air

eye turns this way, eye turns that
flicker tapping, rat-a-tat
my bark hides my secrets
artfully

I lean toward it, for what it woke
humid dark, a quiet smoke
the let's-play-but-not-quite
vexingly

this organism trembles soft
presses, pushes, damn the cost
a curling lip, a downward dip
wickedly

I eat the air; it's incurable
though mostly, it's endurable
I won't know its worst
wait and see . . .
