We Rest the World on Our Backs

The weight of the world rests on my shoulders

I don't know how long I'll survive

And the oceans are leaking, spilling free from their holders

Its up to me to guarantee earth thrives

I don't recall volunteering for such an arduous task

Its as though I just woke up with it there

Compensation is never offered, I never ask

And I feel as if no one ever volunteers their share

It is just my world and me as the continents crumble

There is no one who could ever understand

I'm alone waiting for my own knees to buckle

My world has so much to demand

With tears in my eyes, scraps on my knees I finally let my arms fall

Watch as the earth crashes down, down, down

As I stare at the rubble, straighten my back to stand tall

Suddenly I find my own strength renewed and my smile back from its frown

I raise my nose in the air, no prouder could I be

But then as I turn it's my pride I now lack

For as far, and as wide as I can see

All around everyone rests a world on their back

I glance down where my battered earth rests

I had believed that I was forlorn, by all those around

But now I realize it was I who made the tests

And I rush to help others put their earths on the ground
