and in his eyes

she saw a glimpse

of a future sharp and bright

all longing gone

composure strong

the heart full and right

but his words were sharp

as though he couldn't see

all the marvellous things

she believed him to be

so that future dimmed

and set like the sun

on a love that never quiet was

and yet still un-spun 

though it hurt to watch

she still stood in awe

of the most sublime sunset

she ever saw
