Chapter 1. Self Acceptance

Over the years of trying crash diets, over the counterweight loss crap, starving myself and only losing ten to twelve pounds here and there, I know I will never look like what society wants me to look like. My body will never be a size two. It's hard and depressing going out with my size two sister. She gets the stares, the winks and, the whistles from men of all ages. I don't really care about any of that.  Although I am self-conscience about my size, I can't let that be my main focus or concern.

I've become determined to focus on more important things. My dream career has to be my main focus and a priority. I refuse to let my weight hold me back.  And I refuse to let some people who point out my curves bring me down. Determination is key to me achieving my goal.

"I will not allow anyone, or anything hold me down or break me," I whisper as I make my way into the restaurant.

"Skye?" her familiar voice catches my attention.

"Gemma. I thought you had the day off?"

"Yeah, I was supposed to have the day off, but Carrie called in sick. Why are you here, I thought you were teaching a class today, Skye?"

"I did. We had a half a day today. No more classes till next fall."

"Oh, I guess I forgot. Are you here for lunch?"

"Yes. I want a garden salad, the small bowl of fruit, and water."

"Ok. Are you going to your home or,-"

"No, I told Grammy I would go visit her after class."

"Oh, well I plan to bring home a guest with me after work, so maybe we can all have dinner tonight."

"Sounds good to me. See you this evening, Gemma," I softly smile as I turn to leave. As I make my way towards the door, a guy busting one of the booths looks in my direction. I would be lying if said his good looks didn't catch my attention.

"Wow! He is good looking," I whisper. I see a smile forming across his face.

After arriving at my grandmother's, I notice a strange man lurking around the front of her house. My hand pushes the door to my truck open and I quickly make my way towards him. He turns and steps towards me.

"Excuse me, who the hell are you and what the hell are you doing lurking around my grandmother's house?" I ask and notice the evil grin form across his unshaven face.

"You must be Skye, Natalie's granddaughter?"  He asks. I glare at him as I step closer.

"I'll ask you again. Who the hell are you and what the hell are you doing on my grandmother's property?" I ask with a clinch jaw.

"Your grandmother never told you, did she?"

"Tell me what?"

"Look, maybe you can talk to your grandmother. I am prepared to pay your grandmother a lot of money."

"What? Pay her a lot of money for what?"  I ask and he looks around the property.

"Over one hundred-fifty acres, yes?"

"Ok, you know my patience is starting to wear thin with you. You either tell me who the hell you are, or I will call the cops," I snap. He reaches in his breast pocket and pulls out a white colored card.

"Jacob Hillman?"

"Yes, that's me. I want to buy this property, Ms. Summers."

"Well, not only do you know my first name, but you also know my last name? That really pisses me off, Mr. Hillman. Have you spoken to my grandmother?"

"Yes, and she refuses to sell her property. You look like a reasonable young lady."

"I'm stopping you right there. This property has been in the Summer family for eight generations, we will never sell this to you, or anyone. Get the hell of this property."

"Now listen here, Skye," he snaps coming towards me. I step back.

"Hey," I hear a man's deep raspy voice behind me. I turn and look up and recognize him.

"It's you. The waiter from the restaurant," His eyes glance down at me.

"Don't worry, Skye. This idiot will no longer bother you or your grandmother. Tell the lady right now, you are leaving, and you will never come back to bother her or her grandmother," he commands. Mr. Hillman swallows the lump in his throat and his body begin to tremble.

"Um, yes, that's right. I am leaving now, and I will never bother you or your grandmother again."

"See that you don't, Mr. Hillman. If you ever come onto my grandmother's property again, you will be leaving in handcuffs."

"You heard the lady. Get the hell off this property."

"I have no idea who you are but thank you. Wait, aren't you Gemma's friend?"

"Yes, she sent me here to wait on her, and let me tell you, I am very happy I decided to come here. I'm Drew Paxton," he extends his hand. I place my hand in his and feel his thumb caressing the top of it.

"It's a pleasure to meet you, Drew."

"The pleasure is mine, Skye.

"Oh good, you met my sister. Come on, I'm starving," Gemma says walking up the driveway.

"Gemma, I thought you had to work this evening?"

"Nope, not now. I called Robin to cover my shift, Skye. I'm going in to see Grammy, see you both in there, "she says. I realize I'm still holding Drew's hand. I look up at him and see his beautiful smile along with his beautiful dark brown eyes.

"Um, you probably want that hand back," I whisper.

"I was perfectly fine with you holding my hand. I can't wait to see what happens with us next," he smirks as he makes his way to the door.

"Aren't you with my sister?"

"Friends only, Skye."

"Did you tell her that?"

"No, but I will if I have to.

"You realize we literally just met?"

"Yes, and I like what I'm seeing," he smiles walking into the house.

"No, I can't go down that road again."
