Courtney had a rough week. She barely slept anymore afraid that she had lost her best friend forever. As she walked down the school hallway, Eric's Earth Day Art project fell to the floor and broke apart. Courtney snapped out of her haze and helped him pick up the pieces. She believed in hope. This wasn't a lost cause. She offered to help him glue it back together in the library before first period.
Eric went to History with a huge weight lifted off of his shoulders. At a neighboring seat, Jennifer dug through her book bag in a panic. She forgot her textbook. It was the second time that week and she needed it for the class assignment. Her schedule resembled a chessboard. It was hard to keep track of everything. Eric slid his desk over and they shared his. She never had to know that he'd been crushing on her since the second grade.
Jennifer went to lunch ready to finally take a breather. In the back of the room, the substitute Spanish teacher sat alone. Jennifer could have hung out with her friends and complained about their bellowing marching band director. Instead, she sat with Mrs. Ortiz and told her how great of a job she was doing. Who would have known Mrs. Ortiz was a pro at staying organized?
Mrs. Ortiz walked into the nearest coffee shop right as Marcia was getting yelled at by a customer. Once Mrs. Ortiz arrived at the counter, she complimented Marcia on her cabello hermoso. This put a smile on Ingrid's face. She missed her native country of Guatemala, but Mrs. Ortiz reminded her of home. So she gave her a coffee on the house.
Marcia walked to her car dancing to one of her favorite Marimba tunes. She noticed that the parking meter of the car behind hers ran out of time. She put in change for an extra ten minutes and drove home singing at the top of her lungs.
Donny raced out of the Burger Box praying he had put enough money in the meter. But with that line, he doubted it. All he wanted was to go the bathroom. But no! Patrons only. When he got to his car, he was surprised to see a whole extra five minutes on the timer. Thank God! He was so glad he didn't get that burger and settled for just water only. This had to be his reward. As he got into his car, he saw a strangely familiar puppy taking a walk down the street. It was the puppy from the Missing flyer he spotted during one of his morning jogs. Good thing he took down the information.
Donny scooped up the puppy, put her in the backseat and gave her a ride to her owner's house. He rang the doorbell and Courtney answered the door.
