Thank you Em-dog
The sisters entered the Griever Hole with Emily on top of Teresa's back.
"Ouch! Get off, Em!" Teresa snapped.
"Sorry, sorry." Emily rolled off but when she landed on the ground, it made a squish sound. The girl put her hand on the ground and yelped.
"THIS IS SHUCKING DISGUSTING. OH MY GOD! WHAT IS THIS?! GRIEVER POOP?! IT'S SO OILY AND --"
She was interrupted by Chuck making a sploorsh sound as he landed and Thomas trailing after. When everyone was standing and ready, the sisters and Chuck ran to the dimly lit computer that was several feet down the tunnel while Thomas stayed back to guard.
"Wait!" Thomas called out. "Are you guys sure you remember the code? It's Flo--"
Emily scowled, stopped running, and turned to his direction, "Oh my shuck, yes we do. We're not idiots, Thomas! We are competent enough to remember a simple six word cod--"
The brown haired girl was cut off by the sounds of grievers echoing throughout the tunnel. Thomas began to fight them off just as she caught up to Teresa and Chuck to see that her sister was already typing in the code. She looked back at Thomas again to see that he was defeating the blubber metal monster with ease. She scrunched her face at how easily he could beat them but she turned to face Teresa with frantic fingers typing the same word over again.
"What's wrong?!" She asked.
"It won't let me enter the last word!"
"What do you mean? Push is really easy to spell, y'know... It's P-U-"
"This isn't funny, Em! Help!" Teresa typed 'push' again but nothing happened.
"What? Let me try." Emily pushed her twin out of the way and typed. She made sounds of frustration as she tried for the sixth time. "What the shuck?! This code's supposed to work!"
"Emily, stop! We established that already! Let's think about this! Okay... um...."
The sisters' train of thought was interrupted by Chuck's timid voice, "What if you pushed that button?" He pointed to a spot under the screen and keyboard. Emily crouched down and saw a red button with three bold words above it:
Kill the Maze
Her jaw dropped, realizing how unobservant and stupid she and Teresa were.
"Wow, Chuck. We --" Emily turned to face Chuck but she yelped as she saw him about to get attacked by a griever and Thomas fighting a swarm of them a couple feet away. She yelped once more before snapping back to her senses and pushing the button. As soon as she pushed it, the four gladers witnessed the grievers dropping dead and heard a door slide open farther down the tunnel. Emily straightened herself then ran over to Chuck, hugging him then patting and squishing his face.
"Chuck! Are you okay? That griever could've killed --"
The curly haired boy moved away from her grasp, "But it didn't! I'm fine, Emily!"
Emily cleared her throat, "Right. Sorry. Thank you, though. You saved us. We never would've figured out the last part of this crazy code. You're a shucking hero, buddy."
She could see his cheeks redden at her words. She put an arm around his shoulders and laughed. "C'mon. Let's get out of here." The two started to walk towards the exit before Thomas stopped them.
"Whoa whoa. Aren't you guys forgetting something?"
"What are you talking abo-- OH. RIGHT. The other gladers. Gotcha."
Teresa stifled her laugh. "Wait, how are we going to tell them to come?"
Emily put her hand to her chin, "Well... Minho said to scream to let them know to come so..." She sucked in a huge amount of air, preparing for a scream. The others squeezed their eyes shut and plugged their ears. Luckily, a glader came and was followed by many others. Emily scanned the group of boys until she found Newt. His eyes met hers and they ran towards each other and embraced in a tight hug.
"Oh my god. I'm so glad you're okay." Emily mumbled as she squeezed him tighter.
"I'm glad you're okay. I should've came with you, to protect you. Who knows what would've happened if you... if you..."
"But I didn't. Don't worry, we're together again and that's all that matters, right?"
Newt nodded in agreement and smiled. The pair laced their hands together then walked over to the group of gladers. When they got there, the mood was very solemn.
"Hey guys... where is everyone else?" Emily asked quietly.
"They're dead. We lost half of the gladers." Minho stated.
Emily's face softened and she looked to the ground. Chuck patted her back which made the corners of her mouth start to twitch up.
"We should get going." Someone called out.
There were murmurs of agreement at the statement. Shortly after a long pause, they trudged towards the door at the end of the tunnel.
********
"Ouch! Not again!" Teresa groaned as she tried to wiggle out from the bottom of the huge pile of gladers. Once they were untangled, the stood up and looked around the underground chamber.
"Bleh, worst slide ever." Emily crinkled her nose at the lingering smell of overused machinery and burnt plastic. She covered her mouth and quickly ran over to a corner and puked. When she finished, she wiped her mouth and rubbed her hands on her pants. She turned back to see the other gladers with mouths shaped like the letter 'O'. Confused, she looked at where they were staring and her mouth formed an 'O' just like theirs. Through the many tinted windows were the people who sent them to the Glade. The people who took them from their parents. The people who took away their lives.
The Creators.
********
Emily drowned out everything around her. The gladers crying above her. The gladers staring with shocked faces. The Creators just standing there, doing absolutely nothing. The sounds of Minho's fists finding multiple homes on Gally's face. The sound of Newt yelling and screaming at the Creators but getting held back by Frypan and Thomas. She didn't concentrate on anything but Chuck. His breaths were becoming shorter and blood seeped from the wound to the surface of his clothes.
Gally threw a knife at him. Not exactly him, though. Gally tried to throw it at Thomas but Chuck jumped in front of him. It was all so sudden. Emily put his head on her lap and that's when the tears started to fall.
"Em... Em... Em-dog." Chuck struggled.
"No, Chuck. Save your breath. CAN SOMEBODY SHUCKING HELP?!" Tears streamed down her cheeks and fell on his curly hair.
"Em-dog.... t-thank you." Blood spurted from his mouth. "Please f-find my mom. Tell her..." And with that, the boy's body went limp and his breathing ceased. Emily gasped and brought her hands to her mouth. Her crying became uncontrollable and something came over her. Revenge and hate and rage surged throughout her body as she ran towards a random Creator and began beating him with all she had. Her vision was blurred by her tears but that didn't make her hand-eye coordination any worse. Each punch she threw found a place on the man's body.
"HOW. COULD. YOU! YOU HEARTLESS SHUCKFACED SHUCKS! HE WAS JUST A BOY! HE WAS JUST A BOY! YOU MOTHERFUC-" Something hit her hard on her head and everything faded to black.
********
"Ch... Chu...CHUCK!" Emily screamed and sat up but instantly regretted it as pain in her head throbbed. She laid back down on the bed. Wait, what? A bed? "Where the heck are we?"
Newt, Teresa, Minho and Frypan all sighed in relief.
"Thank god! You're awake!" Frypan lifted her up to a sitting position and hugged her.
"Argh! Ok ok. Stop! Where are we?" Emily asked.
"These people... they rescued us and brought us here." Newt answered.
"Ah.. uh.. okay... How long was I out?"
"Almost three hours. The Creators hit your head pretty hard, shank." Minho replied.
"Wow... ouch." The girl clutched her head again then her stomach rumbled. "Hey, is there any food here? I'm starving, man."
"Here ya go, sis. Eat up." Teresa offered her a plate with 5 slices of pizza stacked upon each other.
Emily dreamily sighed and took the plate. She chewed slowly, savouring the flavour of the pepperoni pizza. While working on her second slice, she looked around the room and she felt a sharp pang in her stomach.
Chuck was never going to come back.
Chuck was never going to have his first kiss.
Chuck was never going to see his parents, if they found them.
Chuck was never going to be here to make jokes.
Chuck was never going to be there to break awkward silences.
Chuck was never going to be able to grow old with someone.
Chuck was never going to come back.
This pain was nothing that she had ever felt before. It didn't hurt on the outside like her head injury. This feeling was something that was eating her away from the inside. This feeling made her stomach feel twisted and upside down. This feeling was like a part of her was gone and there was no way for her to get it back. Emily dropped her pizza and she started to tremble. Her eyes started to water at the thought of Chuck's last words.
"Em-dog.... t-thank you. Please f-find my mom. Tell her..."
"Hey guys? Can you go?" Teresa motioned for them to leave the room.
The three boys looked at each other and nodded. Minho and Frypan patted her shoulder and Newt bent down to kiss the top of her head. Before Newt could leave the bedside, Emily grabbed his arm.
"C-can you st-stay?" She stuttered.
Newt held her hand. "Of course."
Emily looked up to the ceiling and took a deep breath.
"I promised I would get him to his parents." She said quietly.
"I'm sorry." Teresa said with the same tone.
"It's just... I... I promised him. I.. it's my fault. I didn't protec--"
"Emily." Newt started, "We probably wouldn't have survived that bloody escape without you. Half of us made it. Everyone would have died if we stayed at the Maze."
"Chuck wasn't part of the half. He didn't make it."
"Em, it was Chuck's choice. He died trying to save Thomas."
Emily spoke to Teresa in her head, "We can't trust Thomas. Maybe they made Chuck do it, didn't you see how they were controlling Gally? He couldn't do anything to fight it. Maybe Thomas deserves to di--"
Teresa cleared her throat, "We shouldn't mourn this anymore, we should try to honour him. Without him... we never would've been able to figure out the last part of the code. You, me, him, Thomas... we all would have been griever food."
Emily was at a loss for words, all she could do was nod. Newt looked down at his watch and sighed.
"It's getting late. We should get some shut eye. I'll see you in the morning, okay?"
Emily nodded again and she closed her eyes as he kissed her forehead. He walked out of the room and closed the door. Teresa walked over to the bed beside her and slumped onto it.
"Geez." Teresa whispered. "When is he ever going to ask you out? You guys are practically dating already."
Emily bit her lip and almost smiled at the thought. She could tell the Teresa was trying to lighten the mood. It almost worked but it wasn't enough to stop the pain of the loss of their friend.
"Goodnight Resa."
"Goodnight Em."
