Let Me Go
Emily's eyes opened into slits and saw a blurred view of the cloudless greyish blue sky through the doorway. Her stomach grumbled, and she frowned. She slowly got into a sitting position, and when her eyes fully adjusted to the darkness, she noticed a figure sitting beside the entrance, looking down at the ground.
"Hello?" she whispered, trying not to wake up the others.
"Hey, Emily." The figure replied. Emily immediately recognized the boy's British accent and crawled over to sit in front of him. Both of them had their legs crossed and hands in their lap. An awkward silence was between them before Emily spoke up. "Uh... how is Min doing?"
Newt shrugged. "He's fine. Tough bugger. Clint got him patched up as best he could after you fell asleep."
Emily nodded and then it went back to silence. The girl looked up to see the blonde boy fumbling with his fingers and staring at his knee. Before she could turn away, his eyes looked up at her from behind his hair. The pair stared at each other, letting their expressions and eyes do the talking. Finally, their voices broke the silence.
"I..."
"I..."
Emily gestured to Newt. "You go."
"I... I think we should talk about... what happened between... us." He said quietly.
The girl sat up straighter. "I... what... what's there to say?"
"Er..." Newt shuffled closer to her and took her hands out of her lap and held them. To both of their surprise, neither let go. "I... Emily Gabrielle... there isn't any other way to put this but... I just have to get this off my chest. Agh... Emily. Ever since you came to the Glade, my whole world changed. You're my rock, and I need you in my life. Ever since that night, my whole world fell apart, and the thought of being without you pains me. I can't get through the darkness without you. Emily, you're my light. I.. I bloody love you."
Stunned, Emily stared into Newt's brown eyes. Newt was about to open his mouth, but Emily stopped him by crashing her lips to his. At first, it was slow but as it went on, the faster and more passionate it became. Their lips moved perfectly together, and Emily was now sitting in Newt's lap. His hands were on the small of her back while hers were tangled in his blonde hair. Smiles were present on both of their mouths. Minutes later, Emily was the one that broke it off. Newt's eyes were fixed onto Emily's before she moved off of his lap onto the cold hard floor.
Emily bit her lip. "I... Newt... I'm sorry."
Newt looked at her with confusion. "What..."
"I'm sorry. I... shouldn't have done that."
Hurt filled Newt's eyes once more, and his gaze was longing for an explanation.
Emily cleared her throat and tried not to let the tears trickle down her cheeks. "I care about you too, Newt, so much that I want to keep you as safe as possible. Physically and emotionally. The only way that I can keep you safe is if... we don't have a relationship like this. I need you to... stay away from me. I wouldn't be able to live with myself if something happened to you during one of my Flare freak outs. If we keep our distance, it'll cause you less pain if something happens to me. Same goes for me but about you. Hell, it would be better if I left all of you. You... have to try to let me go."
"Em, you bloody can't leave. My feelings... our feelings... we can't change that."
Conflicts, feelings, and thoughts swirled through Emily's mind until she eventually walked over to where she slept and picked up the remains of her possessions off of the floor. She walked towards the door and set her foot onto the sand. She took a deep breath and started to take another step but was interrupted by Newt, who was standing behind her.
"I can't let you go." He spoke, voice full of pain.
Emily didn't bother turning her head to face his as it would cause her even more sorrow because of this decision. "I can't let you go either. But... I'm already gone." And with that, she started to sprint farther into the destroyed and seeming desolate city with tears running down her face.
********
Newt
I'm on my knees with my fists clenching my head. Tears are pouring down my face uncontrollably. I just let the love of my life leave me. It's just like when she ran into the maze, but this time, I have a feeling that I will never get the chance to see her again.
A pained moaning sound from behind me makes me turn around. It's Minho. Shuck.
"Ohhhh..." he groans. "Shuck, man. This shucking hurts. Did I mention how shucking much it hurts?"
"Morning, princess," Thomas says all of a sudden.
Minho shoots him a glare and then looks to me and notices the tears. "Yo Newt. What happened? Nightmare? Does Baby Newt need his papa?" He points at himself and winces. I can tell that he's trying to be funny, but it doesn't really work, seeing him in the state he's in. I don't reply and bite my lip. His features soften, and he slowly sits with the wall as support. "Hey. Sorry, shank. What --"
Frypan stretches, and we hear his bones crack. He smacks his lips as he rubs his eyes and looks around. "Where's Emily?"
Minho moves his gaze from Fry to me and widens his eyes. "Shuck! Where's Em?!"
"I..." Thomas looks at me more intently, and I rotate so I'm fully facing Minho. "She bloody left, man."
"What do you mean by 'she bloody left'?! How? What?"
"She left, Minho. She's gone." It hurts me to say this, but I have to try to make myself realize that she really is... gone.
Minho runs his hands through his hair and sighs. "Shank, ya gotta tell me what happened."
By this time, the rest of the gladers were waking up, and most were listening to us. I gulp and explain what happened, leaving out the kiss, of course. Minho's arms were crossed, and he pursed his lips. "What... why would she think... does she not realize how shucking worried we are now? We were handling everything just fine! She was fine!"
I fumble with my fingers. "Fine doesn't always buggin' mean that --"
"That you're fine." He finishes with an annoyed tone. "Yeah, I know. But... shuck. Shuck! Emily Gabrielle..." He shakes his head. "Don't worry man. We'll find a way to get your girlfriend back."
I snarl with a quiet voice. "She's not --"
He changes the subject. "Anyway! How many of us are left?"
Fry does a count and announces. "Ten."
I sit motionlessly, we started with so many in the glade, at least forty or fifty and now... ten?
"So..." Minho counts with his fingers. "Seven are gone? Eight?" His tone sounds like he couldn't care less of the missing... or dead... people.
"Eight," I say as I shoot him a glare. He gives me a what can you do? look and I just roll my eyes at him.
Aris speaks up. "Hey, sticks. What are we gonna eat? Sorry to ruin the moment but I don't know if you've noticed... we need food."
I look at him with irritation, but someone pulls my attention as well as everyone else's.
"Food?" The voice has a weird accent, something I haven't heard before.
We look up and see a man jump from a hole in the ceiling. He does three flips in the air before landing on his feet. He stands in a stance and stares at us with his wild eyes as if expecting some form of admiration for his gymnastics abilities. He puts his arms down with fake disappointment on his face.
"Who are you?" Minho questions as he stands up, getting prepared to put up a potential fight.
"The name's Jorge, hermano." The man opens up his arms and gestures to the building. "I'm the Crank who rules this place."
