CHAEYOUNG:

I watched as Mina woke up with a small smile. It's been a week since I got her out of her hell. We've been keeping up with the news. The whole country, maybe even the whole world, is going crazy about how first my body disappears then Mina disappears as well. It's been going okay for us, Mina acts more and more like her old self each day, except sometimes I'll make her too angry and she explodes, lashing out, and sometimes it takes hours to get her to calm down. I can't blame her though.

"Hey, I think I need to give you a choice," I said, unwilling to actually say anything.

"What do you mean?" Mina asked, reaching for my hand.

"I just mean," I sighed and held her hand, "Would you like to go see Momo and Sana? Maybe even go back to living with them?"

"I..." Mina whispered.

"I'll give you some time to think about it." I said, giving her hand a soft kiss, "BUT NOW, MORE IMPORTANTLY. I MADE WAFFLES."

Mina's eyes lit up and we did this thing we do every morning. She'd jump on me and laughing I'd carry her all the way to breakfast where Jennie and Jisoo would gag at us at the same time.

"We have blueberry and regular buttermilk. Oh, and I made eggs on the side." I said, setting Mina down.

"Can I have a Chaeyoung flavor---

"NO. I DO NOT NEED THAT IMAGERY," Lisa said walking in.

"Fine, blueberry please, and eggs, with a lot of ketchup!" Mina said.

It was fairly calm for a morning. Usually, Jennie would freak out over something stupid like a dead ant and Jisoo would facepalm and tell her to calm down. Or Rosé would tell Lisa to clean up her clothes in their shared room and Lisa would scream and run away. However, today was simply quiet and I kinda liked it.

"Chaeyoung..." Jennie suddenly said, grimly.

"What?" I replied, scarfing down a waffle.

"We need to go." Jennie said, getting up quickly, nearly panicking.

"Why?" I said, though cleaning up and grabbing essentials as quickly as I could.

"Someone unfamiliar just crossed into our perimeter." Jennie said, "Mina needs to get out as soon as possible. I think it might be her old wardens."

"Why can't you just say leave because the people who locked up Mina are here?" I asked, "Why do need to use the word 'wardens?'"

"Can you just leave?" Jennie said.

"Yeah, yeah I'm going." I said, grabbing Mina's hand.

"Are we moving?" Mina asked.

"Just hiding, don't worry about it." I said, giving her a reassuring smile.

"Hiding where?" Mina asked.

"UM... I DON'T KNOW JUST BE QUIET!" I said.

"We'll be fine as long as you don't yell 'HOLY HELLISH COWS.'" Mina finished.

"This is a personal attack--

"CAN YOU TWO STOP BANTERING LIKE AN OLD MARRIED COUPLE AND LEAVE????" Jisoo said, glaring at the two lovebirds in disbelief.

"Yeah yeah okay I'm going," I said, holding Mina's hand and heading towards the safe house.

I could hear the aggressive knocking of people and the heavy footsteps of people. Mostly likely the vampire task force. Mina at this current moment in time was an unstable hemaphile because no one knew I was alive.

"What's happening?" Mina asked once I said we were in a safe place.

"We kidnapped you remember, broke you out of that prison. So to the rest of the world, we stole an unstable hemaphile from jail because they don't know I'm alive." I said, "They're trying to take you away because they think you'll hurt someone."

Mina nodded slowly at me with a soft frown on her face.

"They think I'm still dangerous..." Mina quietly said, as if the memories of her damaged past years were drowning her.

"Hey... Hey. You're not that insane girl anymore, you never really were. You were just stuck in lonliness and we're going to get over it." I said smiling.

"I know... I'm just scared." Mina said, "And to be totally honest, I miss Sana and Momo and of course your sisters... I hurt them when they came to visit me."

"Maybe we should go see them, but not today." I said, "We will soon, I promise."

She smiled up at me briefly but the sound of people coming towards us was louder. I honed my hearing in on their breaths. I had memorized what Jennie, Jisoo, and Lisa sounded like when they were breathing so I would always know who was coming. This breathing, however, was different. It was coarse and heavy, definitely masculine too.

"Stay here Minari." I said, "Someone's here."

I carefully stepped out of the safe house only to see a man dressed in very stereotypical guard clothes. He whipped his head to look at me and there was a syringe with a dark blue liquid in it.

"Oh well. Hello, um, angry looking guard dude with a scary syringe." I said, really awkwardly beginning my lie while hiding my face with my hood, "I was just trying to pee in teh forest here... Um..."

"Have you seen Myoui Mina, one of the hemaphiles who helped save Korea from Kyung?" The man asked.

"Um... Isn't she in jail for being unstable or whatever because that Chaeyoung girl died or something?" I asked, nearly rolling my eyes.

"No, she escaped, and this syringe has to be injected. It shuts down her body for we are on Red Protocol. We need to shut her down and contain her. It also helps erase memories of anything she's down past her escape date. We can't have her understanding what freedom feels like." He said, making me extremely angry.

"You're a monster." I said, knocking off my hood, "I think I'll go ahead and shut you down."

"Chae--

He never got to finish his sentence because I grabbed the syringe, using my speed to my advantage and I stabbed it into the side of his neck. The fact that people even thought they could do this to anyone, whether they were insane or not made my blood boil.

His body dropped and I checked his pulse. It was still there but seeing what this serum did to this man immediately scared me. Something told me he'd be okay eventually so I ran back to Mina only to find her with bloodly bodies all around her, you could tell from the way they twitched that they were still alive, but it was a shock nonetheless.

"Mina..." I whispered...

"I-I didn't mean too... I-I just got so scared... I..." Mina looked up at me, sobbing.

It really hit me then... Mina was insane for 5 years... Five years is such a long time to be alone...

MINA POV: 

Chaeyoung looked at me, not scared, not angry, but apologetically. I looked at the people around me. They had all just jumped at me and I don't know what happened. I felt an icy blue vision come over my eyes and then I heard the men scream and finally I smelt the blood and all I could do was hug my knees.

"Mina, look at me," Chaeyoung said, gently lending out her hand.

I looked up and I felt myself calm down a little, by erratically beating heart now only beating because Chaeyoung was looking at me with so much love.

"They'll live. It'll be okay." Chaeyoung said, pulling me up into her arms.

I rested my head on her shoulder and let my tears spill. I didn't want to hurt anyone. I was just so scared. I just got my life back and all those men wanted to do was take it all away again.

"Chaeyoung, Mina. We have got to--- Holy... What happened here?!" Jisoo said, running in.

"I'll explain later. Where are we going?" Chaeyoung asked, holding my hand comfortingly.

"We're going... Well, you guys remember the school you went to before?" Jisoo said.

"Oh god, of all places you're taking me back to high school?!" Chaeyougn said.

"There's a safe house in the school's basement made when they rebuilt it after the sinkhole," Jisoo said, "No one knows it's there except the people who well... Brought Chaeyoung back."

"Let's just go..." Chaeyoung said, her mood suddenly getting very dim.

Nowadays, Chaeyoung kept secrets from me and I could tell. I would ask her about her last five years, other than being dead and she'd change the topic immediately. Sometimes I'd catch her doing things that she had never done before, like digging her nails into her arms when Jennie or Lisa accidentally said something out of line. She would get angry a lot faster and she'd yell too now. I'd never heard Chaeyoung yell before until Jennie lost my medicine that we had bought to help me stabilize.

Chaeyoung's yelling was terrifying. It started off in a low very dangerous voice. A glare developed in her eyes and her fangs would come out with a sneer on her face. Her fists would clench so tight that her knuckles would turn pale. Then after speaking so low, her voice would suddenly crescendo and it would resonate throughout the room. It was shrill and so rage filled that it nearly sounded like she was about to murder you. I had never seen Chaeyoung so angry and so... Well, scary to be blunt. She was just terrifying.

Then her entire aura would change once she was done yelling. The soft look would return to her eyes and she'd sigh, quietly say sorry and then she'd retreat to her room. Then the next time she came out of her room everyone acted as nothing happened. In fact, they smiled and laughed and I wondered if Chaeyougn had ever gotten angry at all, but the slight look of fear in the other's eyes lets me know immediately that it happened.

"Chaeyoung, I know--

"I said, let's go." Chaeyougn said, cutting Jisso off and a slight glare in her eyes.

Jisoo simply nodded and started leading us away.

"Chaeyoung, you don't have to be so angry at her. She's keeping me alive and free and that's more than what I could ask for." I said, trying to calm the girl down.

I had already dealt with so much fear and anger just now with the men, I didn't need Chaeyoung to add to that. However, the girl just looked at me with a nearly glassy look.

"You just don't understand Mina... Not yet..." Chaeyoung said, sighing.

I really wish I knew what was happening inside CHaeyoung's head but I never did. She would just say something like that then smile at me like she is now and I was honestly both angering but also so confusing.

"Will I ever?" I replied.

"Maybe you'll understand soon..." Chaeyougn said as we got into the car.

"Now, everyone. To that sinkhole school we go." Jennie said, starting up the car.

"NO WHY IS JENNIE UNNIE DRIVING?!" Rose panicked.

"Calm down, I will not be murdering anyone." Jennie said, "Or any ducks, or rabbits. I'm okay at driving okay."

"Oh that is not very true at all..." Rose said, shaking her head.

"You did almost crash us into a tree that one time because you were afraid of a bug..." Lisa said.

The mood lightened with this conversation, but Chaeyoun still had that glassy look in her eyes. And I realized.... That look had been there since the day she rescued me.

Sometimes it felt like she was still dead.
