Chapter Three

TW: Mentions of Past Abuse
After the meeting concluded, Patton and Logan filled out the necessary paperwork, officially ending their adoption process. Now, they had to wait. They said goodbye to Remus, who practically tackled them in a hug, continuously muttering, "Thank you."

The week of processing passed far to slowly Remus' liking. Finally, one morning, Jennifer knocked lightly on Remus' door. Opening the door, Remus took in Jennifer's excited expression. It had gone through. He had been adopted. He hugged her tightly, his smile wider than it had been in ages. "They're coming to get you today," Jennifer said with a grin. Remus pulled back in shock, his smile widening more, if that was even possible. "You'd better pack your things, they're going to be here in a couple of hours!" Remus nodded and moved quickly, grabbing his backpack. Jennifer chuckled before leaving the room. Remus pulled out his four pairs of pants and five shirts. Money was tight, and Remus knew not to be greedy. His mother made sure of that. After Remus finished packing his things, he rushed down the stairs and sat on the couch, waiting eagerly. Jennifer turned from where she was playing with some of the toddlers with a grin. "They're not going to be here for two more hours, Remus. You can relax for a while." The boy nodded, internally groaning that he had to wait so long. He sat for about 10 minutes when he decided that he needed to distract himself or he would go mad. "Is it alright if I use the guitar, Jen?" The woman nodded with a smile. Remus had a beautiful voice and it always lifted the mood in the small orphanage. Remus grabbed the stringed instrument and strummed a few chords. Music had been an escape for Remus since he had come to this orphanage 5 years ago. Slowly losing himself the the beautiful notes, Remus sang along with his strumming. Losing track of time, Remus didn't even notice when the two men walked through the front door. Remus continued singing, effectively capturing the attention of the couple at the front. When he played the last chord, loud clapping echoed across the room, causing Remus to snap his head up. "You're really talented, kiddo!" Remus felt the blush creep to his cheeks. "Thanks," he said with a grin. "Are you ready to go, Remus?" Logan asked with a soft smile. Remus nodded eagerly, grabbing his backpack and walking over to the pair. "Where's the rest of your stuff, kiddo?" Patton asked. Remus looked down at his feet. "This is all I have," He said softly. "Well, we'll have to fix that, then," Logan said. "Oh, no, you don't have to buy me anything. I have everything I need, really," Remus said quickly. "Nonsense, it is not a problem at all," Logan replied. Remus nodded, dropping the conversation. Being greedy was bad, but arguing was worse. "I hate to see you go, but I'm so happy that you found a good family," Jennifer said, approaching the young boy. Remus stepped forward and hugged her tightly. "Thank you for everything," he whispered. "Of course, Remus. I love you." Remus smiled. "I love you too."

Pulling away, the pair looked at each other with a smile. "Well, you should be on your way then," Jennifer said, gesturing to the door. "Thank you for everything, Jen. We'll take good care of him," Patton said with a smile, opening the door. The three boys stepped out, turning back and waving at Jennifer before she shut the door. This was it. Remus was finally going home.

The drive to the Berry household was rather short, as they only lived about 20 minutes away. Remus couldn't stop fidgeting in excitement, causing Patton to grin fondly at him. Soon, the car pulled into the driveway of a beautifully cozy two story house. Remus stared up at it with wide eyes and an expression of awe. "You like it, bud?" Patton asked with a smile. Remus nodded quickly, stepping out of the car. The couple chuckled and got out of the car as well, walking to the front door. Logan unlocked the door and pushed it open, allowing Remus to enter first. Remus nearly gasped upon entering. This house was beautiful. It was rather average to societies standards, but to Remus it was perfect. This was nothing like his old house, and he loved that fact. He turned back to the two men with an incredibly wide smile. "This is amazing!" Remus said, earning a laugh from the other two. "I'm glad you like it, Remus," Logan said. "Would you like to see the rest of it?" Patton asked. Remus nodded quickly. Patton showed him through the house, pointing out the kitchen, living room, and bathroom downstairs. From there, they went upstairs. "On the right is mine and Logan's room, and here across the hall is your room bud!" Remus grinned. "I get my own room?" "Of course you do!" Patton exclaimed. He gestured for Remus to open the door, which the young boy did. Upon looking into the room, Remus felt overwhelmed with emotion. He turned back to Patton and hugged him tightly. Patton hugged him back, rubbing his back. "Do you like it, kiddo?" He asked softly. Remus nodded fervently, not trusting his voice at this moment. "I'm so glad you do. We can add some things or change some of you want! It's all yours." Remus pulled back. "No, it's perfect. Thank you so much. I don't deserve this." Patton furrowed his brows. "Of course you deserve this, Remus. You deserve so many things, and Logan and I intend to do everything we can to give them to you." Remus didn't know what to say. There wasn't really anything to say. So he resorted to hugging the man once more, reveling in the comfort it provided.

"So, I take it he liked the room?" Logan smirked from the doorway. The pair pulled apart, looking toward him. Remus couldn't help himself. He ran toward the tall man and hugged him tightly. They both had done so much for him in just a week. Patton giggled at Logan's shocked expression. "You're quite the hugger, aren't you buddy?" Remus pulled away from Logan in shock. "Um, no. Not really. I'm sorry if you didn't want me to. I didn't mean to make you uncomfortable, I'm sorry. I didn't think," Remus rambled off quickly. Hugging was not allowed in his old house. It showed weakness and was cause for a beating. "Oh, no Remus. I was just saying that because we've gotten a lot of hugs today. That's not a bad thing at all. You can hug us whenever you want bud!" Remus looked at him in surprise. "Are you alright, Remus?" Logan asked, placing a hand on his shoulder. Remus flinched at the contact, immediately pushing Logan's hand off. Logan's face immediately became covered with guilt. Remus turned to face Logan quickly, backing away from him. "I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hit you. I'm sorry." "It's alright Remus, I shouldn't have touched you without your permission. I'm not angry at you," Logan said with the softest voice Patton had ever heard him use. "You're not mad at me? You're not going to punish me?" Remus asked. Logan felt his heart break. "Of course I'm not going to punish you. You didn't do anything wrong." Remus nodded, looking confused as ever.

"Logan and I are going to go work on making some lunch, do you want to get settled in your room? We'll call you when it's ready," Patton said softly. Remus nodded, prompting the couple to leave the room. Remus turned and looked at the room, taking in the design. The walls were a deep emerald green with a dark gray carpet. There's was a bed pushed in the corner with a black and green bed spread. Across from the bed was a chest of drawers and a wooden desk. Remus smiled. This really was perfect. More than he could've ever hoped for. He set his backpack on his bed, quickly unpacking the few things he brought and putting them away. After putting his backpack in the closet, Remus laid back on his bed and, after a moment, laughed lightly in disbelief.

He actually had a home for once.
