Chapter Thirteen
TW: Panic attack, Brief mention of violence
The following morning, Remus awoke to Patton shaking him softly. He opened his eyes and turn toward the man with a sleepy expression. "There you are. It's time to get up for school," Patton said softly. Remus nodded and stretched before rolling out of bed. Patton ruffled the boy's hair fondly before leaving the room. Remus pulled out his new outfit and changed into it, grinning once he was dressed. He loved it. He walked to the bathroom and finished getting ready before returning to his room and pulling on his high tops. He took one more moment before grabbing his backpack and descending the stairs. Patton nearly squealed when Remus entered the kitchen. "Aww! You look so cute! Oh my goodness, I can't take it," he cooed. Remus just blushed and chuckled. "Thanks, Patton." Patton handed Remus a plate of toast with Crofters on top. "Eat up, kiddo. Logan's going to be driving you." Remus nodded before sitting at the kitchen table with his plate. He ate the toast quickly, putting his plate in the sink when he was finished. "Aw, thank you Re," Patton said with a smile. "No problem," the boy replied. Logan soon came down the stairs, dressed sharply as always. "Are you ready to leave, Remus?" Logan asked as he moved to grab a banana for himself. "Yeah I am," Remus responded, grabbing his backpack. "Let's go. I'll see you this evening, my love," Logan kissed Patton lightly, causing the man to giggle. Remus smirked fondly at the pair. As they separated, Logan lead Remus out of the front door and toward the car. The pair got in and began the drive to the school. The silence of the drive was causing Remus' thoughts to run wild once more. What if they hate you? What if you're bad again? What if they punish you? What if- "Breathe, Re. You're going to be just fine," Logan reassured as he reached over and grabbed Remus' hand. Remus held onto him tightly, willing himself to calm down.
Soon, they arrived at the school. They got out of the car and made their way inside, Remus' nerves still noticeably present. "Let's get your schedule," Logan said as he lead the boy into the front office. "Hello. This is Remus, he is the new student. Could we obtain his schedule?" Logan asked the receptionist politely. "Of course, dear. Here you are. Have a nice first day," the woman smiled brightly at the boy. Remus smiled back before following Logan out and down the hallway. "Right here on the left is my classroom if you ever need me. Now, according to your schedule, your first class will be English with Mrs. Tolentino. She is incredibly kind." Logan stopped right outisde of the classroom, turning back to the boy. "You're going to be okay, Re." Remus nodded before hugging the man tightly. Logan hugged him back, wanting to protect him for just a moment longer before he was left to his own devices. "I'll see you on the other side, Logan," Remus said with a grin before turning and entering the already full class.
"Ah, you must be my new student. I am Mrs. Tolentino. Why don't you introduce yourself to the class?" Remus took a shaky breath before turning to face the class. "Um, hi everybody. My name is Remus Berry."
Unbeknownst to the boy, Logan was stood right out side of the door with teary eyes and a wide smile. He had said his last name was Berry. Logan immediately turned and made his way to his classroom quickly, needing to call Patton immediately.
"It is very good to have you here, Remus. There is an empty seat on the second row that you may sit it," Mrs. Tolentino explained. Remus nodded his head and took his seat, pulling out his new notebook and a pen. He had messed up his chance at schooling last time. He refused to mess it up again.
His first class passed with ease, as did his second and third. His fourth class of the day was science. As he entered the classroom, the teacher walked up to him quickly. "You must be Remus. It is very nice to meet you, my name is Mr. Sanders. We have an empty seat in the back row next to Dee," the teacher said, pointing toward the unoccupied spot. Remus mumbled a quiet thank you before moving to his seat. He sat in silence until the class began. However, he couldn't help himself from glancing over at the boy next to him every few moments. He wasn't sure why. Finally, Mr. Sanders stood at the front of the room and began his lesson. "Hello, class! So, today we'll be starting a new unit. For the next month or so, we will be learning about 'Forensics'. This is, to put it simply, the study of crime connections based on scientific tests." Remus felt himself becoming increasingly nervous. He wasn't sure how he would react to hearing about crimes, especially if they were violent. "Today, I am going to show you a video about a crime and the scientific evidence behind it. Just a heads up, this video is rather graphic. Feel free to step out if you need," Mr. Sanders explained as he pulled up the video and began playing it. The first minute or so was explaining the purpose of forensic studies in relation to charging and convicting criminals in a court of law. The problem came when they showed a rather graphic reenactment of the crime. The video showed a young man being beaten in an alleyway before being shot between the eyes by his attackers.
Remus froze with his eyes wide. His breathing quickly became labored as his panic built at an alarming rate. His mind was attacking him, yet he couldn't take his eyes away from the scene in front of him. Dee took notice of the boy's state and almost immediately realized what was happened. "Hey, it's going to be okay," Dee whispered as he began digging through his backpack. Remus shook his head slightly, fear possessing his body. Dee finally found his headphones and plugged them into his phone hastily. He handed the earbuds to Remus, who looked at Dee with terrified eyes. "Put them in your ears. It will help, I promise." Remus shakily put the headphones in his ears, allowing the calming music to fill his ears and block out the video. However, the music couldn't block out his memories and the violence of his mind. Dee needed to take action for this boy, and he knew it. He pulled out one of the boy's earbuds carefully, attempting to not frighten the boy any further. "Just put your head down on your desk and make sure your eyes are covered. I'm going to go talk to Mr. Sanders and get you out of here, okay?" Remus nodded with tear-filled eyes, replacing his headphone and putting his head down in his arms. Dee moved to the front of the classroom quickly, explaining the situation to the teacher in a hushed tone. Mr. Sanders looked up at Remus quickly, concern filling his features, before nodding at Dee. Dee made his way back to the shaking boy, placing a light hand on his shoulder. Remus flinched heavily, but looked up at Dee nonetheless. Dee held out his hand for the boy to grab. Remus looked at it for a moment before grabbing his hand lightly, allowing himself to be pulled out of his seat and toward to exit of the classroom. The pair didn't stop walking until they reached the bathroom. Remus' breathing was still quick and sharp, indicating that he was still panicking. Dee knew about panic attacks all too well. "Hey, can you look at me?" Dee asked with a soft voice. Remus' eyes met his, prompting him to continue. "Good job. Now, try to match your breathing with mine. Breathe in for 4, hold for 7, out for 8, just like that," Dee continued to count out loud, eventually getting Remus' breathing to slow. Remus' panic was soon replaced with a burning embarrassment. "I'm sorry," he whispered. "Hey, don't apologize. I get panic attacks too, I get it. I'm Dee, by the way." Remus looked up at the boy. "I'm Remus." Dee grinned.
"It is very nice to meet you, Remus."
