Chapter Fourty Three

Patton sprinted up to the front door, locking his car hastily. The man fumbled with his keys before unlocking the door as quickly as he could. He was immediately met with the approaching form of his tearful husband, who immediately embraced him tightly. Patton dropped his bag on the ground and shut the door quickly before holding the man close. "I'm so sorry I couldn't get here sooner," Patton mumbled. "No, no it's okay. Thank you for coming home early," Logan responded, his voice rough from crying. "How is he?" Patton asked softly, pulling away from the embrace slightly to look into the man's eyes. Logan's expression saddened. "I-I don't know. He passed out in the car and hasn't woken up since," he explained. Patton's heart rate sped up. "He hasn't? How long has it been?" Patton asked worriedly. "Only about half an hour," Logan responded, making Patton calm down slightly. "What happened?" Patton finally asked. When Logan had called him, he had only managed out a few quick details including Remus being hurt and panicking until he passed out. He was still incredibly confused and concerned about the cause of this. Logan took a deep breath, attempting to push down his emotions in order to explain what happened without breaking down entirely.

"A group of students were harassing him and Dee. Remus stood up for him so they all turned on him and beat him. B-but they choked him and then shoved him into a locker, and it made him revert back to when his birth parents..." Logan trailed off, unable to continue due to the lump in his throat. "Oh my god," Patton whispered. "It was so bad, Patton. He was screaming so loudly," Logan whimpered out as his tears began to fall once more. "I'm so sorry, baby," Patton whispered as he allowed his husband to fall into his arms once more. "Why can't he be left alone?" Logan asked softly, his voice now weak. Patton's heart clenched. He often wondered the same thing.

Once he had calmed slightly, Logan pulled away and wiped his cheeks hastily. "The janitor unlocked the door to get him out. He was panicking so badly that he passed out," Logan said, breaking Patton's heart that much more. "Oh, no," he muttered. Logan just swallowed harshly and nodded. Patton furrowed his eyebrows as he attempting to comprehend the situation, finally deciding what needed to be done to ensure their son's future safety. "He's not going back to that school," Patton said firmly. Logan looked at him with a slightly shocked expression, prompting Patton to continue. "A-at least, not for a while. Not until those kids are gone and he can return safely, and especially not until he's mentally recovered. I...I can't put him back into a possibly harmful situation. I can't," Patton said, his voice wavering slightly. Logan nodded as he placed his hand on Patton's arms comfortingly. "You're right. We'll figure out what to do until it is safe and acceptable for him to return to school, but not a moment before then. We have to protect him," Logan responded, earning a nod from Patton.

Their conversation was interrupted by the sound of heartbreaking screams coming from upstairs. Patton immediately sprinted toward the source, swinging open his son's door quickly. Remus' eyes snapped up to Patton, the boy immediately scrambling out of bed and throwing himself into Patton's arms. Patton held him tighter than he ever had before. "It's okay, Re. I'm here, I've got you. You're okay," Patton reassured the shaking boy. Remus continued to cry harshly into Patton's chest, gripping onto the man as tightly as he could. Logan watched from the doorway, his heart heavy.

It took far longer than usual to calm Remus down. He sobbed continuously for well over ten minutes before his harsh cries began to lessen into soft whimpers. Patton began to pull away slightly, cringing when the boy cried out and clawed at his shirt tighter. "It's okay, I'm not leaving. I'm not going anywhere," Patton reassured, sharing a concerned look with Logan. Remus buried his face into Patton's chest, worrying the man even further. Patton didn't know what to do. To be honest, he didn't think there was anything he could do. So he continued to comfort the boy, whispering reassuring words and petting his hair softly. Once Remus was somewhat calm again, Patton carefully moved them to the bed and laid down with the boy on his chest. Remus hid his face in Patton's neck, his arm staying firmly around the man's waist. Patton held him just as tightly before motioning for Logan to join them. Logan watched the pair sadly before climbing onto the bed next to them, rubbing Remus' back softly. The family stayed in the bed for nearly an hour, comforting the still shaking boy as best as they could.

Patton was beyond concerned at this point. The fact that Remus still hadn't calmed down after such a long period of time worried him greatly. "Re?" Patton asked softly. The boy didn't respond, only acknowledging the man by tightening his grip ever so slightly. "How are you feeling, bud?" Patton asked, attempting to keep his voice level. Remus didn't respond once again, prompting Patton and Logan to look at the boy in concern. "Can you look at me, kiddo?" Patton asked, once again going unacknowledged by his son. Patton furrowed his eyebrows, watching his son with a confused expression. They three sat in a tense silence until Logan finally sat up, saying, "I'm going to go get him some water." This immediately caught Remus' attention, as he made an urgent screech and turned to grab Logan's arms quickly. Logan's eyes widened at the boy's actions, sliding back into his previous spot. "Okay, I won't go. I'm staying, it's alright," Logan reassured carefully, effectively calming Remus slightly as he laid back down on Patton's chest.

Patton and Logan stared at each other, fear and confusion filling their features. They didn't know what to do or how to help their son, and that absolutely terrified them.
