Chapter Fourty Six
Roman didn't leave Remus' side until late that evening when his mother requested he come home. The twins hugged each other tightly, wishing they didn't have to say goodbye. "I'm always a phone call away, okay? Call me if you need anything at all," Roman said, Remus nodding. "I will," he responded, somewhat sadly. Roman looked at him for a moment before hugging him once more. Once the pair pulled away, Roman walked out of the house and dune the driveway. Remus waved somberly from the door as Roman got into his mom's car, leaving the boy watching his brother drive away once again. He's not leaving forever. Remus had to remind himself of that often.
In the week following Roman's visit, Remus had improved tremendously. He still lingered near Patton or Logan at almost all times, but he was no longer sobbing every time they went into a different room. And if he still clung to his dads in the middle of the night, the lingering fear still present, then that was the family's business. Regardless, he was finally getting better.
One day the following week, Remus had a thought so shocking that he audibly gasped, scrambling for his phone. In the midst of all of his mental health issues, he had completely forgotten about his boyfriend. Remus' heart dropped as he scrolled through his contacts, knowing how badly it must've hurt Dee that he hadn't talked to him in weeks. When he finally reached the contact, he pressed the call button, anxiously biting his thumb as the phone begin to ring. After a couple of rings, the call finally connected. "Remus?" Dee asked, his voice incredibly rough, obviously from crying. "Dee! Oh my god, I'm so sorry for not calling sooner," Remus rambled out quickly. "It's fine," Dee said softly, his sad tone contradicting his words. "No it's not. I should've called sooner. I'm really, really sorry," Remus said sincerely. "It's okay," Dee responded. Remus could tell that it really wasn't. "I at least owe you an explanation," Remus continued. "It's fine, you don't have to," Dee responded. "But I want to. After everything, I kind of...broke down. I don't know how to explain it, but my mental health was shit. I wasn't even talking until like a week ago. I was just...so scared. But I know that's no excuse for not calling you for so long. I just wanted to explain," Remus said, a long silence following. "You really broke down?" Dee finally asked, his voice incredibly soft. Remus swallowed harshly. "Um, yeah," he responded. Another silence fell between the pair before Dee finally spoke up. "Can I come see you? I want to talk to you about something," Dee asked, his voice shaking mildly. "Yeah, I'm sure that's fine," Remus responded, grinning softly at the knowledge he'd see his boyfriend soon. "Okay. I'll be over soon," Dee mumbled before hanging up. Odd Remus thought. He didn't dwell on it, however, making his way downstairs to find his dads.
The pair were sitting at the kitchen table, Logan working on a crossword while Patton flipped through a cookbook. "Hey," Remus said softly, both men looking up and smiling at the boy. "Hey, Re. How ya feelin?" Patton asked. "I'm alright. I actually had a question, though," he responded. "What is it?" Logan asked. "Is it okay if Dee comes by for a little bit?" he asked, slightly nervous for their response. "Yeah, of course. I'm sure you two have been missing each other," Patton responded genuinely. "Thank you," Remus grinned, sliding into a seat at the table. The family sat in silence for a bit before Patton spoke up. "You know, I'm really proud of you, kiddo. We both are." Remus flushed lightly at the compliment, more so when Logan nodded in agreement. "Thank you," he responded softly, unsure of what else to say. Patton reached over and grabbed his hand, squeezing it lightly in a comforting way. Remus smiled softly in return.
20 minutes later, there was a knock at the door. Remus immediately jumped up from his seat at the kitchen table, making his parent chuckle softly. Remus paused once he reached the door to compose himself before pulling the door open slowly. There stood his boyfriend, his eyes slightly red and puffy. "Hey Dee!" Remus exclaimed with a wide grin. His expression dropped slightly when Dee didn't smile back. "Do you want to come in?" Remus asked, his tone less excited than before. Dee shook his head harshly, avoiding eye contact. "Dee?" Remus asked, reaching out and touching his arm lightly. Dee immediately pulled back, finally making eye contact with his boyfriend. "Dee, you're scaring me. What's going on?" Remus asked worriedly. His heart dropped at Dee's response.
"We need to break up."
