Chapter Fifty
Remus groaned as Patton shook him awake. "Good morning bud," Patton said softly. Remus stretched with a loud yawn. "Morning," he mumbled. Patton chuckled. "Haven't missed these early mornings, huh?" he teased. Remus snorted and shook his head. "Well I'll leave you to get ready," Patton said as he started to leave. "Hey Dad?" Remus asked before he could go. "What's up kiddo?" Remus smiled genuinely. "Thank you for letting me go back to school." Patton returned the soft smile. "Of course, Re." With that, Patton left the room so Remus could get ready.
Remus stretched once more before stepping out of his bed to get ready. As he got dressed and brushed his teeth, Remus felt his excitement creep in. He really was excited to get back into his normal routine. Once he was completely ready and his backpack was packed, he made his way downstairs to the kitchen. "Wow, record time," Patton teased as Remus sat down at the kitchen table. "I'm just really excited for school," Remus admitted sheepishly. "You really are your Papa's kid," he mused, earning an amused eye roll from his son. "Here kiddo, I made you some toast. Eat up," Patton said as he set the plate in front of Remus. The boy thanked him before digging in, eating faster than he normally did. Patton watched him with an amused expression.
Soon after, Logan entered the kitchen and made a beeline for the coffee pot. "Good morning to you too," Patton said, giggling after to show he wasn't actually irritated. Logan gave him a forced smile before downing his coffee, earning a chuckle from Remus. This caught Logan's attention, who gave him a slight smirk. "Good morning, love. Are you ready for the day?" he asked as he joined his son at the table. "Yeah! I'm really excited, actually," Remus explained, his energy filling the room. Logan snorted at his excitement. "Only my child would be this excited for school," he mused. "That's what I said!" Patton exclaimed from the other side of the kitchen, earning a genuine laugh from Logan. Remus watched the interaction fondly. He missed these lighthearted moments with his parents.
Before he knew it, Remus was sitting in the car with Logan headed toward the school. Now that they were almost there, the anxiety began to creep back in. After all, the last memory that Remus had of this place was... less than ideal. "Papa?" Remus asked softly. "Yes darling?" Logan responded. "I'm just a little...anxious," he admitted. Logan glanced at his son momentarily before speaking. "I had guessed that this would be the case. Do you still want to go? Because I can take you home right now if you don't feel ready," Logan rambled. Remus grinned slightly at his concern. "Yeah, I still want to go. I'm just nervous is all," Remus elaborated. Logan nodded. "Okay. When I'm nervous I like to make a plan, so let's do that and see if it helps." Remus thought it over. "Plan A is that I go to all of my classes and everything goes super well," Remus said. "Here's to hoping that Plan A goes off without a hitch," Logan said. Remus giggled. "Okay, Plan B is that I come find you if I get overwhelmed or anything happens," Remus continued. "While I do hope nothing happens, my door is always open if you're too overwhelmed or need a break," Logan assured. "I think those are the only two scenarios that could happen today. I feel a bit better. Thanks," Remus breathed out, the tension in his chest easing slightly. "I'm glad to hear it," Logan responded as they pulled into the parking lot of the school.
As the entered the school, Remus felt everyone's eyes on him. Normally, he would've felt incredibly self conscious and uncomfortable. But today, he was far too excited for the day to let something like that ruin it. So he held his head high and walked to his first class after saying goodbye to Logan. As he entered his class and sat down, Remus finally let the tension in his chest go completely. He pulled out his notebook and pencil, ready to learn.
His first three periods passed by easily, and he was really having a great day. As he walked into his fourth period class, however, his mood shifted slightly. He had forgotten that Dee was in this class. And worse than that, there was a cute boy sitting in what had previously been Remus' seat. Remus tried to push down his feelings, sitting a few seats away from them, but this proved to be very difficult. Specifically because Dee and this cute boy were talking nonstop and were obviously very close. Remus hated to admit it, but he was jealous.
As he sat in his jealous state, Remus couldn't help but listen in on the pair's conversation. At first it was just a morbid curiosity, but then the cute boy said something that caught Remus off guard. "Dude, Janus, you can't pretend that song doesn't suck." Remus' mind was filled with confusion. Janus? Is that his name? Why would he lie to me about something so basic? What is happening?
This was not accounted for in the plan.
Remus kept his eyes locked on his desk as he processed his thoughts, his mind racing far too much to notice that Mr. Sanders had entered the classroom. "Hey Remus! Good to have you back," Mr. Sanders greeted. "Yeah, it's good to be back," Remus responded. Before he could stop himself, Remus turned in his seat slightly to glance back at Dee, only to find him already looking at him with a mixture of shock and guilt. Remus looked at him for a moment longer before turning forward in his seat. Despite his racing mind, Remus forced himself to pay attention and take notes. He wasn't going to let Dee ruin the great day he'd been having. Not a chance.
When the bell rang, Remus gathered his things quickly and walked straight out of the classroom, attempting to avoid Dee at all costs. He could never be so lucky. "Remus?" he heard Dee asked from behind him. Remus stopped and took a breath before turning around. "Hey," Remus responded. "I didn't know you were coming back today," Dee said after a moment. "Well, here I am," Remus said shortly, wanting this conversation to be over. The pair held eye contact for a moment before Remus took notice of the cute boy again, now standing by Dee. "I'm Remus, by the way," he said to the second boy. "Oh, uh, Im Virgil," the cute boy responded. "Virgil went to the same school I went to before I can here. He transferred in while you were gone," Dee explained. Remus just nodded, not sure what else to say. Only then did he notice Dee and Virgil's interlocked hands. This made Remus' blood boil, but not from jealously. Just hurt. "So you two are together then?" Remus asked bluntly. "Oh, yeah we are," Virgil responded, completely unaware of the severity of what he just said. Remus smirked softly, although it was anything but joyful. "Remus, let me explain-" Dee started. Remus let out a dark chuckle, shocking Dee with the pure venom in his tone. "Don't worry about it. I figured you broke up with me because of something like this. I can't say I'm shocked. Well, I'm going to go now. I'll catch you later Janus."
With that, Remus turned on his heel, leaving behind an incredibly shocked and dumbfounded couple. As he walked away from the scene, Remus couldn't help but feel a sense of pride. For once, he had the upper hand. And god, it felt good.
