Chapter Fifteen
TW: Mentions of Violence, Offensive Word
The rest of the school week passed quickly. Each day went by with ease, Remus going to his classes and spending time with his new friend. Everything seemed to be going perfectly.
Until Friday.
The day had gone by as normal, nothing out of the ordinary occurring until the end of the school day. Logan was just about to finish packing up his things when his classroom phone began ringing. He answered it quickly, nearly sprinting out of the room when he processed what the person had said.
"Mr. Berry, we are going to need you to come to the front office. Your son has been in a fight."
Logan couldn't describe what he was feeling. On the one hand, he was incredibly worried for Remus' well being and safety. Of course he was, this was his child. But on the other hand, he was beyond angry. He did not understand nor condone physical violence in nearly any situation. As he walked into the office, he nearly gasped at the sight. Remus was sat in a chair against the wall, his right eye swollen and bruised and his lip bleeding rather heavily. Logan took a deep breath before walking over to the secretary and informing her that he would be taking Remus home. He made his way back over to the boy. "Let's go, Remus," Logan said, his anger evident. Remus stood and followed him to the car, knowing that he had messed up and would most likely be punished for this.
The silence in the car was suffocating. This was broken by Logan's anger and frustration reaching its limit. "Why would you get in a fight, Remus? You know better than that." "I know," Remus muttered. "Then why did you do it? Violence is never the answer." "I know, but-" "I don't want to hear it. You knew it was wrong yet you still did it," Logan practically fumed. "Logan, if you would just-" "No, Remus. This is unacceptable." "But-" "No. I cannot comprehend why you would feel the need to lash out."
"They were calling you and Patton faggots, okay?"
The car went deadly silent after that. Logan was in shock. Of course he wouldn't fight without a reason. "Re..." Logan started. Remus just sniffled and shook his head, turning toward the window. The pair finally pulled into the driveway, the tension still thick. Upon stepping inside the house, Remus stopped in his tracks and turned to Logan.
"And for the record, it isn't a fight if I didn't hit back."
Logan nearly cried as he watched his son walk up the stairs. How could I have been so stupid? The guilt was tearing him apart. But he knew he deserved it. Upstairs, Remus pulled off his sneakers and crawled into his bed, pulling the covers over his head. Only then did he let his tears flow. Harsh sobs wracked his body as loud whimpers left his mouth. He just wanted to stand up for his parents. He didn't want any of this. He didn't want to be hurt anymore. He didn't want to disappoint Logan. He didn't want to cause any more problems. Downstairs, Logan's heart was breaking at the sounds of his boy sobbing loudly. He knew that Remus wouldn't want to see him, but he also knew that he couldn't leave him alone in this state. He made his way up the stairs and toward the boy's room. "Re?" Logan asked softly, expecting the boy to yell at him to leave.
What he hadn't expected was for the boy to whimper out a broken, "Logan." The man rushed to the bed, allowing Remus to throw himself into his arms. Logan held the boy close, letting him cry out all of his anger and fear. "I'm so sorry," Logan whispered repeatedly. Remus gripped onto Logan tightly, afraid that if he let go the man would abandon him. "Please don't leave me," he whimpered out. Logan's arms tightened around the boy. "I'm right here, Remus. I'm not going anywhere." "Hurt so bad," Remus whimpered out. "I know, love. I'm so sorry." Remus continued to cry in Logan's arms until he was reduced to whimpers. "It's okay, my love. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere." Remus' tears subsided, yet he refused to move out of Logan's arms. "Can you tell me what happened, love? I promise I'll listen this time," Logan urged the boy. Remus shook his head fiercely. Logan felt his heart drop. "Why not, darling?" Remus whimpered quietly. "Don't want you to hit me," the boy whispered in a broken voice. Logan couldn't explain how distraught he felt upon hearing that. "I will never hit you, Remus. I swear." Remus just buried his face in Logan's chest. A question came into Logan's mind and the potential answer to it terrified him. "Remus... are you scared of me?" Remus pulled back and looked into Logan's eyes with his own teary ones. "N-not you. Parents. Hurt. Yelling." Logan tightened his grip on the boy. "I'm very sorry for yelling earlier. Seeing you hurt is scary, to say the least. I did not intend to frighten you, so I apologize sincerely. I promise you, Patton and I are nothing like your biological parents. We will never hurt you intentionally. We'll protect you," Logan said softly. Remus curled back into Logan's arms. "Want Patton," Remus whispered. "He'll be here very soon, darling. So soon."
Twenty minutes later, Patton entered the house, completely oblivious to the events that had occurred before he arrived. He made his way upstairs, stopping by Remus' room to say hello to his son and ask how his day was. He never would have expected to find his son, bruised and bleeding, in his husbands arms. "Oh my gosh, what happened?" Patton asked as he quickly made his way over to the bed. "P-Pat," Remus whimpered as he crawled into the man's arms quickly. "What happened to you, buddy?" Patton asked as he looked over the boy's injuries with concern. "Hit," the boy whispered. "Who hit you?" Patton pressed. "Boys at school." Patton held the boy closer. "Why would they hit you, bud? Did something happen?" Patton asked, his concern growing. Remus nodded. "T-they kept calling Logan and you faggots a-and told me that you would never be my real p-parents so I told them to s-stop calling you that a-and that they didn't know what they were talking about." Patton felt tears brim his eyes. "Oh, Re, I'm so sorry. You don't need to protect Logan or me," Patton said softly. "Y-yes I do. Don't want anyone to hurt you," Remus said softly. "I know, buddy, but we don't want you hurt either," Patton responded. Remus looked up at him as a fresh set of tears fell down his cheeks. "What's wrong, buddy?" Patton asked as he wiped away the boy's tears. "W-want you to be my p-parents," he whispered. Patton's heart clenched. "Don't listen to them, Re. As long as you want us to be, we're your parents. It doesn't matter if you're biologically our child. We're your parents, sweetheart," Patton softly explained as he held Remus' face in his hands. Logan slid forward on the bed and placed a comforting hand on Remus' back. The small family sat in silence, comforting each other until the boy's tears subsided. "Come on, Re. Let's get that lip cleaned up, yeah?" Patton urged. Remus nodded, following the man into the bathroom. Logan couldn't bring himself to follow them. He felt so incredibly guilty. He didn't deserve to join them.
Patton sat Remus on the edge of the bathtub, grabbing a washcloth and wetting it in the sink. He kneeled in front of the boy before dabbing the blood on his mouth with the cloth. Remus flinched slightly at the touch. "I know it hurts, buddy. It'll be over soon." Once the blood was clean, Patton threw the towel in the sink. He looked back at his son and placed his hand on his cheek lightly. Remus looked up at the man with questioning eyes. "I'm so sorry that this happened," he whispered. A moment later, Patton removed his hand and moved to leave. "Do you want to take a shower? It'll make you feel better," Patton said. Remus nodded. "I'll leave some clothes outside the door. If you need me or Lo, we'll be in our room," Patton said, leaving the room. Remus shut the door and turned toward the mirror, studying his face. Just a bruise and a busted lip. Not too bad. He turned on the shower and pulled off his clothes, cringing as he saw the other fresh bruises that littered his body. They don't need to know about those. He stepped into the shower, groaning as the hot water hit his skin. He cleaned his body and hair thoroughly, savoring the feeling of the water hitting his skin. Patton was right. This made him feel a lot better. It was relaxing and made him forget his pain, if only for a moment. When he was finished, he turned off the water and dried his body and hair with a fluffy towel. Covering himself with the towel, Remus opened the door and grabbed the pile of clothing waiting outside for him, shutting the door once more. He pulled on the light blue long sleeved shirt and black shorts, collecting his dirty clothes and taking them into his room. After placing them in his hamper, Remus made his way over to Patton and Logan's room. He was confused as to why the door was shut when he heard a choked sob. Remus furrowed his eyebrows as he stepped closer to the door, attempting to listen to what was happening on the other side.
"I'm so stupid," Logan said. "No you're not, Lo," Patton said softly. "Yes, I am. I yelled at him when he didn't do anything wrong. God, I'm terrible." "That's not true. Yes, you made a mistake, but that doesn't make you a bad person." Logan let out another soft sob before he spoke. "You should have seen how scared he was of me. I'm a terrible parent."
That's when Remus threw open the door and made his way quickly into the room. "No you're not. Don't say that," Remus said sternly as he stood by the bed that the men were sat on. "R-Re..." Logan started. "No. You're not a bad parent at all. You're both the best thing that ever happened to me. You're the first people to care about me. So don't say that." Logan nodded, tears falling down his cheeks. "I'm so sorry," he whispered out. "It's okay. I forgive you," Remus said softly. "Can I hug you, darling?" Logan asked. Remus nodded, sitting next to the weeping man and allowing him to hug him tightly.
He wasn't the only one who needed reassurance in this family.
