Chapter Eighteen
TW: Panic Attack
When Patton awoke in Logan's arms, he laid contently for a moment before his eyes widened. He shot out of the bed and looked at the clock, gasping loudly when he saw the time. He shook his husband awake frantically. "What is it, darling?" Logan asked in a sleepy voice. "It's 4:00! I was supposed to pick up Remus an hour and a half ago. Oh my god, it's storming!" Patton exclaimed as he quickly pulled on his shoes. Logan nearly leapt out of the bed as Patton finished speaking. "I'm going to go look for him," Patton said quickly as he ran out of the room. "I'm coming with you," Logan said firmly. "Lo, I know you don't want to, but I need you to stay here. If he comes home and neither of us are here, it could make everything a lot worse. Please, stay here," Patton begged. Logan's face dropped but he nodded. "Thank you, baby. I'll be back as soon as I can. I'll call if I find him," Patton said, kissing Logan's cheek before grabbing his car keys and running out of the house. Patton began driving toward the school, the storm shaking his car slightly. He could feel the pit in his stomach growing as he thought about all of the possibilities of where Remus could be and what he was going through.
Patton's heart dropped when he pulled into the school parking lot and saw it was completely empty. He parked the car and sprinted up to the school doors, only to find that they were locked. "No," Patton said under his breath. He ran back to his car and began driving through every surrounding neighborhood. He was going to find his boy if it took him all night.
Remus could barely breathe. His panic had only gotten worse as the storm raged on. Every crack of thunder caused the boy to scream out and curl in on himself. He was losing his sense of reality as each moment passed. His world was slipping away as his fear pushed him farther and farther over the edge. In an instant, he was no longer curled up on a sidewalk but in his backyard at his old house. He could see his mother and father through the window, laughing at the sobbing boy. "Mother! Father! Please let me in!" Remus screamed as loudly as he could. They just watched him with a sickening grin, reveling in his fear. "Please! I'll be good! I'll do anything, please!" Remus sobbed out. He screamed and begged until his throat was raw, but that didn't stop him. He continued to sob as the loud sounds of the storm shook his body.
Suddenly, he felt a pair of hands on his arms. "Oh my god, I'm so glad I found you, Re. I'm so sorry." Remus screamed and scrambled backwards. "I'm sorry Father! I'll be good, I'm sorry! Please," Remus yelled out, begging the man in front of him. "No, Remus, it's me. It's Patton. Look at me. I'm Patton. I'm not going to hurt you." Remus looked up at the man as recognition flashed through his eyes.
"D-Dad," the boy whimpered out.
Patton's heart stopped. He had called him Dad. He didn't hesitate to pull the boy into a fierce hug, holding him tightly. "I'm right here, buddy. Come on, let's go home," Patton urged as he pulled the boy to the car. Remus clung to Patton, refusing to let go. "I'm here. It's okay now. I'm so sorry," Patton said. Remus held onto Patton tighter. He didn't leave you.
Patton attempted to pull away, but Remus clung to him with a whimper. "Buddy, I'm not leaving you. I just need to get into the drivers seat so I can drive us home, okay?" Patton explained. Remus couldn't understand him in his panicked state, though. All he knew is he had his Dad with him and he didn't want to be left again. He shook his head fiercely as Patton tried to pull away again. "I'm right here buddy, we're just going to get you in the car, okay? It's dry in the car. No more rain, yeah?" Patton said softly as he placed Remus in the passenger seat carefully and buckled him in. As he stepped back, Remus whimpered out a quiet "Dad". Patton's heart clenched, but he knew he had to get the boy home. He shut Remus' door, running as fast as he could around to the drivers side. He slid into the car, wiping away Remus' tears and holding the boy's face in his hands. "I'm here, bud. I'm right here. I'm not going anywhere." Remus looked at him with bloodshot eyes and a broken expression. Patton felt so incredibly guilty.
"I have to call Logan, okay? Then we can go home," Patton explained. Remus stared at the rain pounding against the window, barely processing what Patton had said but nodding lightly nonetheless. Patton pulled out his phone and clicked on Logan's contact, tapping his foot anxiously. "Hey Lo. I found him. We're about to come home." "Is he alright?" Logan asked with a sense of urgency in his tone. When Remus heard Logan's voice come through the phone, he whimpered out, "Papa". "We're coming right now, we'll be there in five minutes." Patton said before hanging up and immediately driving. Remus sobbed quietly in the passenger seat. "Papa," he whimpered out. "Don't worry buddy, we're almost home. We're almost to Papa. It's going to be okay."
They soon pulled into the driveway. Patton ran to the passenger side and helped Remus out of the car and through the front door. When Remus caught sight of Logan, he let out a choked sob and ran towards the man, throwing his arms around his waist. "Papa," he sobbed. Logan looked shocked for a moment before he hugged the boy back just as tightly. "I'm here, my love. I was so worried about you. Thank god you're okay." Patton joined the pair, wrapping his arms around his boys. They stood there for ages, crying in each other's embraces until they were out of tears and they were left with raw emotion. Remus' panic had dissipated, leaving him feeling vulnerable and small. "I'm so sorry, Remus. This is all my fault," Patton said softly. "D-did you decide that you didn't want me anymore?" Remus asked with a broken voice. "No! Oh, no, never. I fell asleep and didn't remember to set an alarm. This is my fault, not yours. You have no idea how worried we were," Patton cried softly. Remus pulled out of Logan's arms and leaned into Patton, wrapping his arms around his waist. "It's okay, Dad. It was an accident," Remus said softly. Patton choked on a sob. "What did we do to deserve such a sweet boy as you?" Patton asked through his tears. Remus stepped back quickly as he thought of something. "O-oh, also, is it okay that I called you..." Remus trailed off. Logan and Patton smiled softly. "Nothing could make us happier," Logan said, loving the way that Remus' face lit up. "Okay...Papa."
Logan's smile widened as he pulled his two boys close once more, the small family feeling incredibly grateful for each other.
