Get the Fourth Wall Repairman on Speed Dial

I stared out the window as the sun rose slowly, tinting the clouds pink. I sighed, pressing my face against the cold glass. I'd spoken with Eliza, she was nice, but I felt like I needed to get closer to her, as well as many of the other people here. I felt comfortable with Angie (of course), Alex and also around James, probably because he'd opened up to me, and that always helps. I'd dogeared my page, setting my psychology book aside, once I noticed the sky lightening. It really was pretty, so I waved Alex over. He'd woken up at 2 AM and refused to go back to sleep, so he was curled up in his new blanket, which he practically refused to part with, reading a book he'd gotten. I smiled as he looked up, eyes landing on the sunrise outside and scuttling over like some type of blanket burrito crab. I laughed as he almost tripped over Angie. He came to sit on the window ledge beside me, offering me some of his blanket, which I willing accepted. I snuggled up to him, yawning slightly, but not really tired. He put an arm around my shoulders and I smiled. Our relationship was purely platonic, we both had partners, and it was nice just to have a friend to curl up next to.

I noticed he'd started humming, and strained to hear what it was, but it appeared to be a random tune he'd come up with. It was nice, fairly calm, but it still had a beat. Alex's eyes glossed over in a way that indicated there was no way he was mentally present. I nudged him.

"Hmm?" He hummed, face snapping towards me, clearing instantly.

"What were you thinking about?" I asked.

"Oh... nothing."

"I'm your therapist, you're you supposed to tell me stuff."

"Self proclaimed therapist." He precised. "And I don't have to tell you my every thought."

"Fair enough, how about just as a friend?"

"Still nope, just innocent thoughts, don't worry."

"I guess... hey what were you humming?"

"Just something I came up with."

"So you're an author, a future lawyer and a songwriter?"

"No... don't you ever just hum random things that come into your brain?"

"Uhhh... no? I never have original tunes stuck in my head, they're always stuff I've already heard."

"Yeah I guess." He shrugged. "I'm gonna miss this place when we're back in New York, it's nice here."

"So am I..."

"I'm going to miss John most." He said matter-of-factly.

"He's your boyfriend."

"Perceptive aren't you." He raised an eyebrow.

"It's one of my many talents." I flipped my hair over my shoulder with a playful scoff.

Alex laughed and pulled his legs against his chest, staring out the window, probably sinking back into thought and I did too, noticing my eyes getting heavy with sleep.

The sunrise was beautiful, the yellow bleeding into pink, which slowly turned into the purple and blue of the retreating night sky. I'd always loved sunrises, I found them far more precious than sunsets because you could watch those if you just stayed up till nine, sunrises were earlier and somehow rarer, even though I'd seen my fair share over my sleepless nights. My arm was wrapped around Theo's shoulders, and I felt her steady breathing as her shoulders rose and fell softly. I watched as birds started to wake, their songs filling the air, and I noticed Theo had fallen asleep. I was the only person in this house that was awake. It was nice, peaceful. There's just this aura that hangs in the air when you're the only one awake, this veil of mystery and charm that reminds you that out of the people around, you're the only one of them that is conscious, and watching the sky fade into day. I sighed and moved Theo onto the pile of pillows she'd crawled off of, stretching myself across the perch in front of the thin glass. The thing about the aura of calm that surrounded me was that it could be shattered by a simple shuffle, a sleepy voice mumbling something as it woke up.

I reminded myself that I only had three days before I had to go home back up in New York City, and sighed, looking over my shoulder at John. I grabbed a mug that I'd been given for Christmas (which was actually a really fun thing to celebrate and I want to do again) and went to the kitchen, drawn to the coffeemaker like a bee to a pollen filled flower. I like coffee, it's not my fault. I fiddled with the machine until it had started producing coffee, and I waited patiently for the mug to be filled and the machine to be done, then I put the cup to my lips and sipped the warm liquid. I went back into the living room, and grabbed my book and glasses, heading back into the kitchen. Peggy's garden was really amazing, and I could see a lot of it from the kitchen so I watched birds flit around the trees, chirping like maniacs. The plants were dying out, like I'd expected to happen, but they still had this beautiful air about them, almost like phenixes. I'd always preferred plants that were on the verge of dying to plants that were fresh and alive, they just seemed more appealing to me, don't judge. I finished my coffee and leaned my head on my hands, turning my gaze to my book. I felt a hand on my shoulder and jumped.

"Jesus Christ! At least give me some form of warning you come in!" I yelped, glasses sliding down my nose.

I turned around to see Hercules smiling at me, and took off my glasses, cleaning the lenses on my shirt. He pulled out a chair next to me and sat down, and I couldn't help but notice that the feeling I loved had gone, and now I was faced with human interaction.

"Hey Alexander." He smiled and I put my glasses back on my nose.

"Hi Hercules." I smiled back, his friendly expression was contagious.

"So, what were you doing?" He asked, then looked at the book and the empty mug and nodded. "You didn't sleep did you?"

I noticed that I'd gotten more then halfway through the book. "I slept. Just not much. "

"Well you should sleep more, school's starting back up soon."

"That means less sleep, haven't you ever gone to school?" I barked out a laugh.

"I have, I just finish all my work during the day."

"So do I, and usually that would mean I'd do my own things at night. But when I'm at school I rarely write for myself because my brain is full of knowledge on how to win a court case, so my own stuff often consists of writing twenty pages more then I should on an essay." I paused. "And when you think about it, the night is just a prolongation of the day. Or is the day a prolongation of the night? Which comes first? The day I guess, if the sun appeared before the moon. Wait no, there were other stars and the Earth still spun, even before the moon. Which means there would still be a day night cycle, so does the day really come first or..."

Hercules just looked at me and I stopped rambling, gaze flitting back to my book.

"Sorry." I mumbled.

"Why? That was actually very interesting. I now have another question I need to answer, and I got an insight on how your brain works."

"A rambling mess of random information?" I raised an eyebrow.

"No, you clearly have thing you're trying not to think of, and they're on your mind enough for you to consider wether the night came before the day and passionate subject. And clearly there's a lot of knowledge stuffed in that little skull of yours."

"What's that supposed to mean?" I challenged.

"Alexander, you're a tiny human being." He responded with a smirk.

"I am not." I protested crossing my arms and furrowing my brows.

"You are though." Oh god no, Eliza had woken up too.

"Liza, you're siding with him?" I stared at her, betrayed.

"You are short though, the only person as short as you is Pegs, and she's a year younger then you." Eliza countered.

I glared at her and hissed, which made her laugh. I sighed and went back to my book, not wanting to leave the characters on a cliffhanger, that would be mean.

The author doesn't care though, I've been left on a cliffhanger multiple times, and it sucks. *glares at camera*

(Uh oh someone get the tape, we need to fix the fourth wall)
