8 - Un-understanding
Reasons Why I Hate Kai #8 : He thinks he's so perfect.
Aunt Helen had totally lost her marbles. Her mascara was running and her perfect face was totally ruined by puffy eyes and smudged make up. Pops just looked utterly exhausted as we fitted a cast for Leif. Unfortunately I was unsure where that money was coming from. Trust me, I'm not saying we shouldn't give him a cast I'm just worried about the impact.
Leif was pretty cheerful for a kid who just came out of near death experience. The doctors looked after him, checking him over, giving him so pain killers and telling us all we needed to know about taking care of his arm and about physiotherapy.
We nodded along like we totally weren't concerned about the bills before skidadeling out of there.
On the drive home I dialled Kai again but it went straight to voicemail. Swallowing the guilt I kept my face in a stony mask of indifference even when I strolled across the fire escape and rapped on his window.
I'd be lying if I didn't say I wasn't relieved when he opened it, but the rather large gash across his forehead made me frown. But I still had my dignity so I eyeballed him like he didn't have messily put on gauze on his face.
"I see you're no medic." I commented.
"No that was Nya." Kai regarded me. "Said I have to suck it up if I didn't want a Barbie band aid."
I snorted. He raised an eyebrow.
"Oh right..." My sincerity was a little rusty but I tried to keep as much as I could without showing I cared. "Sorry I ditched you and gave your car to the fire ninja."
"He gave it back." He replied stiffly.
"That's good, that's good." I licked my lips, not sure what to say.
"May I ask why you decide to ditch me and leave me with the concerns of my own safety?" Kai asked.
I sighed. Ugh, I hate getting touchy feely. I also hate not knowing what Kai's going to do. I like knowing everything, being able to gauge reactions, I don't like surprises. But with Kai he was unpredictable.
"My brother. They were heading to our street. I wanted to me sure he got out okay." I told him.
"Why didn't you let the ninja handle it? It's their job." Kai asked, face serious.
I let out a small laugh. "I trust the ninja to take care of a crazy war lord but..." I gave him a side look. "Not with my little brother."
"Why not?"
"The ninja can't save everyone. I know that. The jobs hard and gruelling. But how do I know that the one they will inevitably have to lose isn't my brother?"
Kai nodded in understanding. He sighed. "But what about me? Am I so expendable that you leave me on the curb?"
"You would've been safer there than with me." I shrugged.
"So you do care!" Kai laughed.
"Ew no. I just didn't want to deal with all that guilt and your sister if you died." I wrinkled my nose. But he knew I did care, I don't just throw around people's lives. Kai was a sort of living breathing person and even though he was the most insufferable person I've ever met I did want his life to stay.
"So are we good?" I asked.
Kai frowned. "I just...don't understand you sometimes."
"Why?" I furrowed my brow.
"You act like you don't care one moment and then act like you do another. It's confusing." Kai leaned back on the rail.
"Why are you so interested in figuring me out anyway?" I raised an eyebrow.
Kai looked away. "Is it because I'm not fainting at your feet like everyone else?" I added.
Kai smirked. "You faint on the inside. Come on, you have to admit I am pretty hot." He tried to put his arm around me.
"Ugh." I scrunched up my nose and shoved him off. "Get off."
Kai watched me carefully. I squirmed a bit. "Tell me something personal about you." He said finally.
"Uh, no." I rolled my eyes. "I came here to apologize not to open up my heart and all that crap."
Kai looked frustrated. "What are you so afraid of?" He asked.
"Afraid?" I said incredulously. "Look, you can't expect me to randomly open up to some random guy!"
"I'm not some random guy! I'm Kai!" He exclaimed.
"And that gives you more rights, yeah I get it." I snapped.
"What's that supposed to mean?"
I glared at him. "It means that your ego's growing a little to big jerk face."
I turned to leave. "I'm going to have to cancel on tomorrow's tutoring. And I guess you can forget about Leif's party."
I hopped in my window and slammed it closed.
