Chapter 3
CHAPTER THREE
I remember when I fell down the school fountain when I was in 5th grade. I was so humiliated that day that I didn't come to school for a week.
It felt horrible since almost every student in the school saw me splash into the cold water.
I looked at Casey Miller. She was crying her heart out in one of the unclosed stall in the women's room.
I knew Romeo Canavan was going to break up with her since the very first day they dated. Now, their relationship has ended after one week of going out.
She's just as humiliated as I was back when I was in 5th grade.
I never knew Romeo Canavan would end up like this. I never knew he'll become a bastard, heartless, selfish guy. I thought he was the sweet kind. But then that was just a thought ought to be forgetten or changed.
"Hey." I called to her but she didn't bother turning around.
"Casey." I soothe her back and tried to comfort her. She didn't stir.
"I know, I'm pathetic. Am I?" She stiffled a laugh and faced me.
Her hair was like an abandoned bird's nest. Her mascara flowing down her face. She's a total wreck. I bet she could relate to Miley Crus' Wrecking Ball now.
"Nah. You we're just a little foolish enough to try and date Romeo Canavan. So no, you are not pathetic." I assured her and soothed her back again.
"Why are you talking to me?" She asked bitterly. I can sense she doesn't want to talk to me but I don't mind.
"I just thought you wanted to vent it out, you know. Also, I thought you needed a friend." I stood up and fixed my skirt, ready to exit the women's room.
Just as I was about to exit the room, Casey Miller grabbed the hem of my shirt and I turned around to face her monster-like form.
"Stay."
So after Casey Miller and I talked, I was kind of relieved that she hasn't lick a single drop of her booger. God knows what I'll do to her if she did that. And also, she made me promise not to tell anyone about our talk.
It was kind of cool to talk with her despite the broken heart she had. She was not what I thought she was, after all.
What did I thought of her anyway?
When lunch break came, I bumped into Connor again but this time, he catched me before I could fall. He was with his new friends. It was like magic, last week, he was just the new guy and now he's hanging out with bunch of popular kids in out school. Ah, the perks of having good looks.
"You keep falling on me." I laughed on his comment and said sorry.
I ordered my lunch and went to our table.
"Seems like you and Connor are cool with each other." Hannah nudged me in the arm causing me to almost spill my iced tea.
"Yeah. We're friends." I replied, uninterested.
"And I think Romeo Canavan is not okay with it. I saw his face when you and Connor bumped into each other." Freeya joined our conversation after Tommy had left the table to buy his lunch.
"Really?" I glanced at Romeo who was devouring a huge hamburger. He was seated with another girl. She was blonde and pretty. I guess her name is Tegan Allen, a British-accented girl who doesn't even come from England.
"Yes. You should have seen his face! It was priceless!" Freeya started laughing to her own comment and I didn't reply to her statement anymore and started eating my lunch.
Lunch break ended and classes resumed. I am now sitting in the front seat of Math class, my usual seat. I looked around the room only to find Romeo Canavan's seat empty. I wanted to talk to him about his breaking girls' hearts.
The rest of the afternoon went on rather uneventful. Except for the part where I had to embarrass myself in front of the class for slipping in the wet floor.
When the bell rang indicating the end of today's classes, I instantly jumped out of my chair and exited the room.
I headed to my locker and dumped all my belongings. I shut it up and went out to the parking lot.
I saw Romeo Canavan's slick and shiny black BMW parked near my poor old and rusty red bike.
As I neared my bike, I could hear his deep voice and a British-accented voice talking. They were in a really deep conversation. I guess he was talking with Tegan Allen. My theory has been proven right when I saw a little of a girl's blonde hair in the side of his car's rear end.
I stopped in my tracks and tried to eavesdrop on their conversation but when I was about to crouch down near the rear end of his car, Tegan Allen started to retreat from her hide and walked away.
Just my luck, Romeo Canavan saw me spying on him.
"Is my Juliet spying on me?" He grinned and I took a step backward.
"No, I wasn't." I denied.
"Sure, you were. Well then, what are you doing here?" He leaned back on his car and I stood up straighter than a while ago.
"I wanted to talk to you, um, about something." I demanded, my voice sounded with full authority.
"About what?" Confusion masked on his face.
I cleared my throat softly that only me could hear. Honestly, I am feeling nervous and anxious at the same time. I don't know how he would react about this. I'm scared he's gonna sprinkle saliva on my face by shouting at me.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" I questioned him and my heart started beating fast.
"What? I didn'tㅡI hadn't done anything to do with you. Why do you sound so angry?" His face was expressionless, so was his tone.
"To me, you didn't but god, Romeo Canavan! Are you that oblivious enough to not see the hurt from every girl's eyes you've played with?!" I panted heavily after my little outburst.
Romeo Canavan didn't stir. He was staring at nothing but into space. I don't think he's listening to me, though. I could imagine my voice going through his right ear and going out of his left ear.
"Romeo Canavan, listen to me!" I pushed his chest while trying to pull back the tears from my eyes that's threatening to fall down on my cheeks.
"Why do you care?" He spat on the ground and dug through his pocket. He took one cigarette out and lit it and I started choking.
If my lungs had it's own life and had 10 hearts left (just like in some games who offer lives in one gameplay) then the unpleasant smell of the cigarette might have one hit, one kill it. It smelled so bad I could die in a minute due to my choking.
I grabbed the killer from him and threw it into the ground, crushing it with my flats.
"Do you want to die?"
"No. Why would I want to die?" He said nonchalantly as if all of this was just nothing to him while this talk means everything to me.
Today, I will try to bring my best friend back to my life once again. I will try to change his bad boy ways. I will try to change his attitude. I will not let him smoke ever again. I will bring back the old Romeo Canavan but I don't know how.
"Why would you give that thing the privilege to kill you?" I said through gritted teeth.
"Whatever. Look, whatever you have to say, I don't care. I'm going." He opened the driver's door and tried to climb in to the driver's seat but I tugged his shirt and stopped him. This time, I won't let him go.
"What now?" His voice give off irritation and I don't mind that. I don't mind it at all.
"What I said back in the treehouse was true. I really miss you." I closed my eyes and let the tears flow down my cheeks. I didn't care anymore. I just want to tell him that I miss my best friend.
He did not reply. That's what I had expected from him in the first place. He was not going to listen to me. I knew it from the very beginning.
"Help me, Juliet." He suddenly mutter under his breath.
"You miss your best friend, right?" He asked and I nodded. Very much.
But then a car stopped in front of us and Connor walked out of the driver's seat.
"Need a lift, Juliet?" He asked, not bothering about the presence of Romeo Canavan.
"No thanks." And I hopped on my bike and went home.
