THIRTY FIVE
About 7 months later one afternoon, like that they were in Lagos and he said he wanted to show her something.
He brought out a blindfold while they were in the car as they approached Falomo Bridge.
What is he up to this time again? She wondered.
He has been buying her stuff left, right and center. She told him to stop buying her bags; they're expensive and she is not a bag person because she is too lazy to be moving her stuff from one bag to another on a daily basis. She still owns dozens she has not even used; she is always carrying particular black one every day.
She did not complain about the watches though 😀 . He too, knew that was her weakness so he always used that one to bribe her, for arriving late to their rendezvous city or missing a date. He has gotten so busy these days, he couldn't even make it to his own birthday party that she planned because he had a magazine interview in Silicon Valley one time. So they had to do it another weekend.
He bought her a new car because he wanted her to leave the old one for him. He said his own is limited edition. Lol till today, she still can't see what is limited on that car compared to the 'regular' models.
"Hope you are not going to use me for rituals" She joked as she tied the blindfold it around her eyes.
He chuckled "Bush woman, someone cannot even be romantic with you in peace"
When they got to the location, he helped her down the car carefully then guided her as they walked a little for about a minute then he stopped her. She could feel him holding his laugh as he steadied her when she almost tripped.
He then took off the blindfold carefully and asked her to open her eyes.
"Tada!" He said heartily.
She looked around; they were standing in the lawn of THAT house. The creepy mansion. The house he brought her to the first day they met.
"Why are we here" She asked, confusion written all over her face.
"I bought it" He said proudly.
Toyin almost fainted. Why would he buy THIS house?
"Osaze, Please tell me this is a prank"
"No it's not a prank, I bought it for us. This property... this land" He stamped his feet on the ground for emphasis then continued. "This place is very symbolic to our love. This is where it all began," He said poetically.
Holy shit! he is serious.
Her jaw hit the floor in disbelief. This yeye house must have cost hundreds of millions because it is located in Ikoyi. That Seyi must have brainwashed him into buying it.
"Really, are you going to buy the club too?"
"Wait, do you want me to buy the club instead? Is that where you first fell for me?"
Mogbe, She put her hands on her head in complete defeat because her man is crazy! She looked back at the house again scanning the dilapidated structure. God! Seyi is a criminal!
He smiled and hugged her from the back. "Don't worry we will bring the whole thing down, I'm going to hire the best architect in Lagos, you can do whatever you want with it."
"How much did you pay for it? Baby this is crazy!" she wriggled out of his arms.
"Not much, I promise. I got valuation reports from three different property surveyors before I went with it. Or....do you prefer a new one? Banana Island?"
"No! Baby we don't need a house right now we are both on the road these days or working abroad" She turned to look at the annoying house again then realized it really wasn't that bad as she scanned the surrounding again. It was just ....old. She moved towards the property to get a closer view of the walls.
It was a nice central location, there was a lot of space in the compound, behind the house was the Lagos lagoon with a nice view of the other side of the Island. The backyard can also be a jetty. The neighborhood was very secure and kind of a suburban oasis in the middle of Ikoyi.
In addition, it IS real estate. Unlike cars, houses are rarely a bad investment. When she turned back to him to grill him more about the purchase he was on one knee. Her heart stopped, her hands flew to cover her mouth.
He had a box in his hand and inside it was the prettiest diamond ring she has ever seen.
"Toyin, like I said to you months back. You are my home, I don't believe there is anything I cannot do in this world but the one thing I am absolutely sure I cannot do is to go on, into a future without you"
"Please be my wife, make me the happiest man in the world" His deep voice was laced with emotions, his eyes sparkly with tears.
She started crying like fool she didn't even care who was watching. That was the happiest moment of her life, just him and her in this ugly ass house he just bought.
She nodded amidst sobs then hugged him as he stood up. He took her finger and slipped the ring on gently then hugged her tightly again, they remained like that for almost a minute.
"My father is already on a plane to Lagos with your father's wine, I've fixed a date with your parents for introduction, we've been talking for weeks now," He said proudly as he fixed her hair, tucked some loose braids behind her ears.
How did he get in touch with her father? No wonder her mum has been calling her to ask some weird questions. He has really mastered this act of sweeping her off her feet huh.
She was surprised but no so surprised because she has met his elder sister, Omoni and little brother, Efe already; Three months ago she met with him in Toronto after her shift. They stayed at his parent's house for two days, his father was not around because he was in the US at the time, but they spoke on the phone.
*****
They had a small classy intimate white wedding in Oniru, six months after he proposed. She wanted it that way, she wanted it to be like the proposal, she wanted to be mentally present while reading her vows to this amazing man that she loves with every cell in her body.
The traditional in Port Harcourt was huge and lit though. That one was for her parent's lol. Her mother flexed with it eehn. She said she wanted to pepper all her 'enemies' who said her daughter couldn't 'find husband'.
After the wedding ceremonies, she continued working on the house with the interior designer between her offshore shifts; she wanted to be fully involved in the decoration before they will go and do garbage in her house.
She didn't pick one of those modern glassy type architecture design that is reigning in Lagos, She made it much more softer and smart. Osaze liked it too. Actually, him he just likes anything she likes sha.
She got pregnant about five months after the wedding. That was not their plan o! They were supposed to wait until her UAE assignment was over but Osaze the coconut head could not keep up his strong pull out game one particular night like that.
She had to do the final 6 months of her assignment with pregnancy. Thankfully, her doctor okayed it. Everything went well but the only issue she had was the increase in sense of smell that comes with pregnancy. It made her much more aware of the sea smell. She has never had a problem with it before but now it irritated her and made her throw up a lot.
"Should I come get you out" He said on the phone when she first complained.
"No I am a superwoman," She said.
"Okay but I don't think my daughter likes it there," He wants it to be a girl so bad. They were yet to find out the gender. They are going to do a gender reveal/baby shower after her final shift when they finally move into their home.
Only Sofi knows the gender because she is the 'gender guardian' and party planner. She went with her to the last checkup and she is the only one the Doctor revealed the gender to, as instructed.
"Stop dreaming, I think your SON likes it here" She countered him, "There are so many cool stuff here for him to explore and play with..... I think he wants to be an Engineer"
"Stop that Engineer talk, my DAUGHTER would prefer to spend her day developing video games with her cool Daddy at home," He challenged.
"Nerds" She teased.
"I miss you two, can't wait for this UAE gig to end." He whined.
Actually, when her HR Department found out she was pregnant they even offered to transfer her back to Lagos. However, she had two more months so she was able to finish the assignment before her transfer back to Lagos and the pregnancy was going smoothly without any issues.
When she got back home, Osaze was super happy. She had grown rounder and her boobs were bigger. He liked that one.
The weirdest thing that happened was she started craving for that damn street gizzard indomie. That was what she wanted that night she got home, and the next day.
One night she went with Osaze to the Vendor's stall. The doctor told her to be 'stretching legs' so they took a stroll, since it was closeby. Months back Osaze had given the guy capital to expand his business so he was able to rent a proper shop with table and chairs.
She got into an argument with the vendor again, as they ate because the salt was 'too much' yesterday he did not put 'enough' pepper.
The Vendor brought a small bowl of pepper sauce to their table then looked at her and said "yen yen yen, you go still carry your leg come here tomorrow, even your baby don sabi better food before dem born am sef "
Osaze high fived the vendor and the two of them laughed at her hysterically.
She hissed and eyed them both. Surrendering to the dragging.
As they finished their food quietly she looked at him and her heart got filled with so much joy. How did she get so lucky?
Just look at him, already a Billionaire(in naira o) in his mid thirties, but still the same kindhearted, warm and down to earth man she met that day.
You see, this child they're bringing into the world probably has his future sorted already but in that moment she prayed silently for the child to inherit Osaze's big heart.
