Hidden truth
Late that night, Kainaat sat on her bed, the room dimly lit by the soft glow of her bedside lamp. Her mind was a whirlwind of thoughts and emotions, and she felt a pressing need to talk to Shubman.
She picked up her phone and dialed his number, her heart pounding as she waited for him to pick up.
"Hey, love," Shubman's voice came through, warm and familiar.
"Hi, Shubman," she replied, trying to steady her voice. "Can we talk? It's about something important."
"Of course," he said, sounding concerned. "What's on your mind?"
Kainaat took a deep breath, steeling herself for the conversation. "I heard about the controversy with my dad. Why didn't you tell me about it?"
There was a moment of silence on the other end before Shubman spoke, his voice tinged with regret. "I didn't want you to think less of me, Kainaat. It's a part of my past that I don't like to dwell on."
"But I need to know," she insisted, her voice soft but firm. "I need to understand what happened."
Shubman sighed deeply.
"Alright. Here's the truth. A few years ago, I was at a bar with some friends. We were celebrating a win, just having a good time. There was this girl there, clearly uncomfortable, being harassed by a couple of guys. No one was stepping in, so I did. I got between them and told them to back off. Things escalated quickly, and it turned into a physical altercation."
Kainaat listened intently, her heart aching at the thought of Shubman in such a situation. "What happened next?"
"Well, the media got wind of it," Shubman continued, his voice heavy with the weight of the memory.
"They twisted the story, made it look like I was the one causing trouble and harassing the girl. The guys I confronted were from influential backgrounds like politicians and Bollywood actor's sons. The whole thing blew up, and it became this huge scandal. Your dad got dragged into it because of his connections with politicians, and it just spiraled out of control from there. The girl didn't gave any statements against the guys so i turned out to be the bad one."
Kainaat felt a rush of anger and sympathy. "So you were just trying to help someone, and it got turned against you?"
"Yeah," Shubman said, his voice somber. "I didn't want to bring it up because I didn't want you to see me through that lens. I was just trying to do the right thing, but it backfired spectacularly."
Kainaat's heart softened. "Shubman, I don't see you any differently. If anything, I respect you more for standing up for someone in need. I'm just hurt that you felt you couldn't tell me."
"I'm sorry, Kainaat," he said sincerely. "I should have been honest with you from the start. I just didn't want to lose you over something that was so unfairly blown out of proportion."
She took a deep breath, feeling a mix of emotions. "I understand now. Thank you for telling me the truth. And for what it's worth, I think you did the right thing."
Shubman felt a wave of relief wash over him. "You do?" He asked, his voice tinged with surprise. It was like she was the first person who believed him
Kainaat chuckled sympathetically. Yes I do my love, I believe you. Whatever you did was right, completely right"
A tear rolled down his cheek "Thank you, love. That all I wanted to hear. I love you kainaat" He whispered
Kainaat whispered back" I love you too shubman i will always be with you"
They sat in silence for a moment, the weight of the conversation hanging in the air. Finally, Kainaat spoke again, her voice softer. "We'll get through this, Shubman. Together."
"Together," he echoed, feeling a renewed sense of hope. "Goodnight, love."
"Goodnight, Shubman," she replied, a small smile playing on her lips as she ended the call.
As Kainaat lay back on her bed, she felt a sense of peace. She knew the road ahead might be challenging, but with Shubman by her side, she felt ready to face whatever came their way.
How was it?
