Vihan's POV
I went toward the spot where Parshav had hinted the shoes might be hidden. My frustration simmered beneath the surface—at Roohi for being so friendly with them, at Parshav for grinning like he’d won some secret prize, and, most of all, at myself for not understanding why it bothered me so much.
But before I could reach the hiding spot, Siddh, Parshav, and Srinidhi swooped in, retrieving the shoes before I even got close. Their victorious laughter grated on my nerves, and I clenched my fists.
Mihir and Gauravi finished their vows, sealing their union with love and promises, but my thoughts were stuck elsewhere. On Roohi. On the way, she smiled at other guys. On the way it made me feel.
And for the first time, I couldn’t convince myself it was just because I was protective. No, this was something else entirely.
Ron gave it a try next, but Mihir’s mom, Megha Aunty, intervened, her authoritative voice cutting through the chaos. “Enough of this. It’s a ritual—let Mihir give them the gift and conclude it properly.” Ron sighed, stepping back.
I wasn’t ready to give up yet. I tried once more, but Mihir shook his head, his expression firm. “Let it go, Vihan,” he said quietly, pulling out his wallet. He handed over a thick wad of cash to Siddh and Srinidhi, far more than the shoes were worth.
The Jindal siblings grinned, victorious, and returned the shoes with an exaggerated flourish. Ron laughed, teasing him for “losing,” but Mihir simply shrugged it off, his face composed, though I caught a flicker of something else in his eyes—tension, maybe?
With the ritual concluded, we all headed for dinner. The hall was bustling with laughter, clinking glasses, and teasing banter aimed at the newlyweds. But there was something off about Mihir and Gauravi.
For one, Gauravi still had her veil pulled over her face, even while eating. It wasn’t her, why was she wearing it? She could unveil and show her face now, at least among friends. Yet she kept it on, her face hidden beneath the delicate fabric. Neither of them touched much of their food.
“What’s with the veil?” I finally asked Mihir, lowering my voice to avoid drawing attention.
He glanced at me, tried to muster a smile, and failed. “Nothing,” he said curtly, shaking his head.
“Come on, Mihir. Something’s up,” I pressed, but he simply looked away.
The rest of the evening passed in a strange haze, the festivities feeling slightly muted despite everyone’s attempts to keep the energy alive.
After the bidaai, we all were supposed to accompany Mihir and Gauravi to his house, planning to tease them mercilessly—make them blush to the roots of their hair as tradition demanded. But Mihir wasn’t in the mood to listen to both of you. It has been a very long day, and both of us are very tired; you both must be exhausted as well; please go home.
"What? No way! " I said but his demeanor shifted. He seemed distracted, his responses clipped, his usual calm demeanor overshadowed by something I couldn’t quite place.
“What’s bothering you?” I asked him quietly, pulling him aside.
He rubbed his temple and muttered, “Headache. I need to sleep.”
I raised an eyebrow, trying to lighten the mood. “A headache, huh? Want to be alone with her?? Don't be stressed, ask me if you need tips. ”
He shot me a glare so sharp that it silenced me instantly. Mihir was serious by nature, but this was different—there was no humor in his eyes, just a quiet frustration.
Realizing it wasn’t the time to push, I backed off. “Alright, man. Get some rest.”
He nodded, barely acknowledging my words, and walked away with Gauravi.
The plan to tease them into oblivion fizzled out, and the rest of us decided to head home. Roohi went to her home with her family.
As I drove back, the uneasy feeling gnawed at me. Something wasn’t right with Mihir and Gauravi. I didn’t know what it was, but it felt heavy, lingering in the air long after the celebrations had ended.
**********
The morning was supposed to be hectic, with me in the hospital, assisting my dad with heart surgery. The day promised to be challenging, especially after how Roohi weirdly behaved last night. She seemed upset with me, so I thought of meeting her before surgery, but just then, I came to know that the surgery was postponed as the vitals of the patient were not stable. So I had extra time now to spend with her, and we could go to meet our newly married friends if she was free for some time.
I knew Mihir’s recent marriage situation was complicated, but I couldn’t resist poking a little fun at him.
I strolled into Roohi’s department, expecting her usual warm smile or sarcastic quip to brighten my morning. I saw that she was wearing a beautiful Indian dress, and looked as pretty as she was looking last night. I was surprised to see her wearing matching earrings instead of her favorite studs that she barely changed, and she was also wearing a small bindi. Her open hair framed her face beautifully. Her beautiful eyes were smeared with eyeliner and Kajal...
Why had she started looking more beautiful all of a sudden? Was she making extra efforts to get ready? But Why?
Then I realized that she was deep in conversation with someone—a delivery man of all people. He stood there, holding a giant bouquet of roses, a card, and a neatly wrapped box, while Roohi looked visibly puzzled.
Curiosity tugged at me. “Good morning, Roohi,” I greeted, trying to gauge the situation.
“Good morning,” she replied distractedly, not even looking at me.
I frowned. What’s with her? “What happened?” I asked, stepping closer.
She sighed and gestured toward the growing pile of gifts on her desk. “I don’t know who’s sending these. Since this morning, someone has been delivering flowers, cards, and now this huge gift box.”
I raised an eyebrow. “And there’s no name on them?”
“No name,” she confirmed, holding up a card.
*Every once in a while, someone crosses your path and leaves you utterly breathless. You were that moment for me. I was mesmerized with you... totally awestruck.
I've thought about this, and I can’t let the chance slip by. Would you give fate a little nudge and meet me...just once...on a blind date?
-Your admirer.
