I can't trust a man. Not after what so many have done to me. There's one thing on their lips, another in their mind. While their lips wreak of lies and drip with honey to seduce their victim, their actions reflect their mind, a truthful yet most often grotesque portrayal of their reality.
I don't trust Kai. Not because his words drip with honey, they don't. It's because he's a man whose words and actions align or what he does, he does not announce. That's dangerous. He doesn't want attention. I can't predict his intentions or his next move merely because he doesn't make them obvious.
That's why I'm stuck. Confused about what to do. I have no choice but to comply with his every demand. He's playing his cards right making it clear that he has the upper hand. Maybe I was foolish in thinking that I could keep Alice safe by sending her away, but how could I make that kind of mistake?
Emotions.
My family lost me years ago because Nick knew I was their weakness. They loved me and using me was the key to his reign. He played every single card right and that is why he is one of the most feared men in America today. He has nothing to lose. No reason to fear anything.
Kai has no fear. Nothing to lose especially between the two of us. He could kill me at any given second, but he hasn't yet and that's the only mercy I'll receive from him. Other than that, he's playing his brother's moves holding against me the one thing I value most: my family.
I happily accept that fate. I'll comply. Be that soulless vessel he and his brother tend to turn every single person they encounter into. I'll dance on his command, kill at his leisure and strip at his lustful look if that means that my family remains unharmed because as long as they're alive, so is whatever remains of my innocence. While they're alive, I can't turn my emotions off. I can't stop caring. I'm not heartless like they are. But the second they hurt my family, I have nothing to lose and then it'll be fair game.
Hopefully, it never comes to that so with that in mind, I get ready changing into the black dress Kai sent over for tonight's event.
The dress itself is cotton with thin straps, a low V neck and an even lower back that stops just above the small of my back. While it's tight from the waist up, kissing my every curve, it flows out at the bottom with a small train at the back and a high slit on the left side. The dress is quite sexy and Kai has exquisite taste, but the only complaint I have is how it displays the scars I try to keep hidden.
When I turned eighteen, I started getting laser removal for my scars and I did it up until I was twenty-one. While most of the scars faded, some deeper ones were stubborn and are still embedded in my skin. I have a few marks on my back, but I don't hate them as much as I hate the little round scars on my chest and ribs. They remind me of a time I never wanna remember so I don't spend too much time in front of the mirror. The less I look at them the better it'll be for me. I think about covering them up with makeup but go against it. If Kai wants to see me, then he's gonna see me authentically. There's no reason to hide from someone whose opinion won't matter.
I also dyed my hair before I showered so that my roots wouldn't show and straightened it with a middle part. I'm keeping my hair behind my shoulders and letting my defined collarbones be the accessory instead of pairing the dress with a necklace. I keep the whole look simple and elegant with only small studs in my hair and go for a bold red lip to match the red bottoms that Kai sent over. He sent over three different sizes of the dress and the heels just so I didn't have an excuse to not wear them. My blue contacts go well with the look and I'm impressed at how well the makeup covered up the bruises on my face. There was no swelling now so that helps, but the bruises are still dark so I had to pack on the concealer.
I'm not sure what this event entails and who will be there, but I'd be a fool to go there unarmed. Even if Kai won't do anything to me, I'm sure some of his partners won't be as nice. I don't think anyone would test Kai and attack me knowing I'm with him, but that's assuming that he makes that clear which he doesn't have to.
I went to the gym yesterday to get some of my frustration out. I spent the whole day there and the workout made me finally have an appetite. Even though I was hungry, I only finished a protein shake and a banana which also made me wanna vomit after. Fortunately, I didn't.
On my way home from the gym this morning, since I went again, I brought back some of my weapons that I keep there for backup. I wasn't sure what I would need, but I grabbed my knife holster and a few smaller knifes which was perfect. The holster is strapped to my right leg, hidden under my dress and I can reach for the knives through the slit easily.
Right when I'm fixing my hair, I hear a knock at the door and head over. My heels click loudly against the floor and the sound echoes through the small apartment. I grab the doorknob and twist it open revealing Alec. He's wearing a dark brown suit with a white shirt which goes perfectly with his hazel eyes. I watch as his green eyes start from the bottom up, scanning my appearance in approval. I remain unfazed. His approval gives me the confidence I need for tonight.
"Ready?" he questions.
"Yeah," I nod. "Let me grab my bag," I say as I head back to my room and grab the small black bag off of my bed. I quickly grab the red lipstick off the vanity and throw it in there before I head back out, past Alec.
I make it outside and stand in front of the black G-Wagon assuming that it's our ride. I'm correct when Alec unlocks it. I'm about to open the door for myself when Alec beats me to it. I give him a dirty look before stepping in and taking a seat. My entrance wasn't as graceful considering the car has lifted tires.
I watch Alec walk over to the driver's side and climb in before starting the ignition. He pulls onto the street and we make our way to the destination.
"Is Alice going to be there?" I question breaking the silence.
"She'll be nearby, but not at the party," Alec explains.
"What is the party for?"
"Kai's announcing some new models that our company is working on and planning on releasing next year," Alec explains. If I had to choose any of the men that I like, I would choose Alec. Not that I like any of them. They're all assholes but Alec has been less of an asshole than Kai and Cole. He gets to the point quickly and doesn't amuse himself with useless banter. I appreciate a man who means all business.
"What am I supposed to do there? I won't know anyone," I tell him. I'm confused. Why would Kai bring me to a public place with him?
"It's a party. Enjoy the food and drinks," Alec laughs.
"Right," I sigh. I remain silent the rest of the ride knowing I won't be getting a better answer than that.
It takes us about forty minutes to reach the building. Alec graciously helps me out and I take his hand considering the G-Wagon is too high up for me to have a smooth exit myself. Once I'm out, I pat down my dress and stare at the large sign displaying Trump.
Alec passes the keys to the valet as I stare at the numerous people making their way inside the hotel. They're all dressed as fancy and I'm left a little insecure about my scars. Maybe I should have hidden them. Then I notice the paparazzi and internally curse as the cameras start flashing.
Fuck. I keep my gaze down as I wait for Alec to hurry. I cannot be photographed with these people. How am I gonna explain it to my dad?
"Ready?" Alec questions breaking my thoughts. I nod and stare at the elbow he has extended out. Without a fuss, I hook my arm through his and we head inside. The paparazzi call out Alec's name and thankfully, he ignores them.
"I don't feel well," I admit as we walk in. Alec seems to have a softer side than the rest and maybe if I play my cards right, I can get him to talk Kai down and show me a little more generosity. I don't think it'll work, but it's worth a try.
"The night has only started," Alec smirks and my face falls at his excitement. I'm not ready for whatever Kai has prepared for tonight and my intuition is crystal clear about that fact.
The security lets us through once Alec lets them know our names. Popstar by DJ Khaled featuring Drake plays loudly through the speakers combined with the crowd's endless chatter. I notice the people wearing expensive designer clothes and huddled in their little groups most likely talking about useless topics. I've been to numerous parties like these when I worked for Nick. He used to send me on missions and give me precise instructions on who to talk to and what information to extract. No need to say I was a natural at it, but as I stand with Alec today, I feel overwhelmed with memories and feelings I had suppressed. This is also different in the sense that I don't have a purpose. At least one that I'm aware of so I don't know what to do.
"I have to go meet a few people, but just stay around here, okay?" Alec whispers into my ear. My face falls again at his words. Why is he leaving me all alone?
"I'll be at the bar," I tell him. He laughs, nodding. I watch as he disperses within the crowd and I look around for the bar. I find it on the opposite side of the stage where most of the men are and head towards it.
All the women have wine or champagne glasses in their hands waiting for the waiters and waitresses to bring them classy drinks. In other words, they're avoiding the bar, but I know I won't be able to suffice with mediocre drinks tonight. I need something stronger and if I have to go through a bunch of men, then I will.
I can feel the women staring already, whispering and gossiping but I don't let it get to me. I keep my head high and posture perfect. The men don't even try to hide it as they stare at me unapologetically. Luckily, I make it to the bar unscathed and lean over getting the bartender's attention immediately.
"Two of the strongest drinks you have," I tell him. I lick my lips and slowly scan his body to make him think I'm flirting.
"Coming right up," he breathes a bit flustered. I nod turning around and lean with my elbows resting on the counter as I stare at everyone. It's my turn to stare and as people notice this, they avert their gaze away from me. The venue is quite large and decorated beautifully with pastel: brown, beige, white and pink colours. There are tables with guests seated as well near the stage. This must be an actual event for his legitimate businesses, but why bring me here?
"Hi," I hear a voice to my left. I turn my head and meet eyes with a handsome man dressed in a royal blue suit. His chocolate eyes glisten with lust as he devours my body before meeting my eyes.
"Hi," I smile as I stand straight.
"Jay Collins," he introduces himself, his pearly teeth shining through his smile.
"Your drinks," the bartender cuts in and I turn my head smiling at him. The bartender throws the man standing next to me a dirty look, but I don't pay much attention. Instead, I look at the two cups on the counter excitedly.
They are my keys to a less miserable night. I think as I pick up one glass and swallow everything inside. Without a break, I lift the second glass with my left hand and devour that as well. When I'm done, I'm left with a burning sensation in my throat, but a warmth in my stomach.
"Damn," the guy says next to me reminding me of his presence.
"Shit," I giggle turning red. I feel my head spin a little as my body becomes lighter. Damn that hit quick. I can't tell whether it was the drink or the fact that I haven't eaten all day, but whatever it is, I like it. "I'm Hope," I smile extending a hand out.
"Hope, that's a beautiful name," he smiles. "Are you here with anyone?"
I look around and frown looking back at him. I shake my head like a child.
"Nope, all alone," I shrug.
"Well, we can't have that, can we?"
"No?" I question with a lustful gaze. I take a step closer to him and stand with my leg between his. I press my thigh against his dïck feeling him through his pants. My finger touching his chest as I trace the outline of his tie, I look up at him. "What are you gonna do about it?"
I watch as his pale complexion flushes red, the blue suit making it more obvious. I feel his dïck twitch in his pants and I smile at his reaction.
"How about a dance?" he offers taking a step back and extending a hand. I take it smiling. We walk through the crowd of people to the dance floor. He puts my hands on his shoulders and rests his on my waist as we start moving to the beat of the song. The song playing is Enjoy Yourself by Pop Smoke featuring Karol G and it sets the perfect mood.
My hips sway as I feel the lyrics and I close my eyes to feel the full effects of the drinks I just devoured. I can feel his smile and intense gaze, but it doesn't bother me. He pushes me out and my hand slides down his arm as he catches my hand spinning me around. My back pressed to his front, I grind against him as I feel his hot breath on my neck.
"You seem to be enjoying yourself a little too much," the man teases whispering into my ear. I giggle as I twist out of our position and sway my hips standing at arm's length from him.
"It's a party what else should I do?"
"True," he agrees laughing. He pulls me into him again as the song changes to No Guidance by Chris Brown featuring Drake. We slow dance to this song.
"What are you doing after this?" the man asks. I look at him knowingly and laugh looking away into the crowd. I pretend as if I didn't hear his question. I don't even remember his name. What makes him think that I'll be willing to go home with him after one dance? Men are so easy, I swear. That and he just ruined my mood with that question.
I was gone for a minute. The stress alleviated as I let the music drift me off into a world of my own. For a second, I had forgotten everything and it was bliss. For a second I was that carefree Summer.
"Mm-hm," I hear a man clear his throat. I look up at the man thinking it's him trying to catch my attention as we come to a stop, but when I look up, I see him staring at someone behind me. The colour in the man's face drained, it seems like he saw a ghost. I drop my hands from his shoulders as he lets go of my waist and I turn to look at what has gotten him so frightened. I find Kai looking at the man with a look of determination in his eyes.
"Boss," the man greets.
"Jay," Kai says. So that's his name. "I see you're enjoying yourself."
"Yeah, Hope and I were just getting acquainted," Jay shares, timidly. Kai's eyes flash with confusion as he finally looks at me acknowledging my presence for the sake of explanation.
"Yeah, Jay's really nice and wanted to keep me company since I'm all alone," I share, smiling innocently but still drunk. My eyes fall to the suit Kai's wearing and all I can say is that this man knows how to dress.
"Ah. I can take it from here then. Hope, and I have a lot to catch up on," Kai says and I feel my body heating up. I'm in trouble.
"Oh, you guys know each other?"
"She's here with me tonight," Kai states. He closes the distance between us snaking his arm around my back and pulling me to his side so I can face Jay. Kai's large hand sits on my lower back and I feel goosebumps rise all over my body from his cold touch.
At this point, the drinks full effects are taking over and I'm too buzzed to say anything so I remain silent displaying an apologetic smile.
"I'm sorry. I wasn't aware," Jay apologizes looking at Kai.
"You don't need to be sorry. I'm not property. It was nice meeting you," I reply before Kai can. I feel Kai throwing daggers at me through his gaze, his hand twitching ever so slightly as it rests on my back. Jay's eyes widen in surprise at my confidence, but he nods and takes his leave quickly.
"Let's go," Kai says as he starts walking us off the dance floor and near a secluded area. I'm grateful that Kai's helping me because otherwise I'm too drunk to walk straight and I think he knows that too. We come to a stop near a wall with people still around us, but no one dares to look our way. His hand twists around my body as he stands to face me and I nervously clear my throat. Too drunk to stand on my own, I rest my hand on the wall to balance myself.
After a few seconds, I lift my head and watch as Kai stares at me with his hand's now in his pockets. His eyes glued to my chest, I have a feeling it's not the boobs he's starting, but the scars. I know I'm a freak Kai. It's your brother's doing.
"Jealous you weren't the one to inflict these?" I tease passively. That makes him bring his gaze up.
"You're drunk, " Kai concludes.
"Not drunk enough," I retort.
"Is anything enough for you?"
"Is that what you're doing? Finding my limits?"
"You won't be able to read me, but I like your persistence. You don't give up," Kai chuckles.
"It's not in my blood."
"Yeah? How would you know?" he throws. I remain silent, the echo of my heart beating in my ears as I realize my mistake. Nothing gets past him.
As a man walks by, I snatch the drink out of his hand and gulp the liquor down as he stares at me. He doesn't say anything and continues walking when he notices Kai.
I bring the empty glass down to see Kai's jaw clenching. He snatches the cup out of my hand and nods towards a waiter who takes it from him. My head spinning even more, Kai nonchalantly closes the space between us grabbing my right arm tightly. I stare into his moon-like orbs, hooded as they glare at me.
"That's enough drinking for tonight. Understood?"
"Why does it matter if I drink?" I speak slowly, inebriated. "I'm literally doing nothing."
"No. You're gonna walk around with me and greet my guests," he orders.
"Like an accessory piece?" I spit.
"No, like my whore," he taunts. The end of his lips stretches into a smirk as I glare at him biting down on my tongue.
"Fine," I pry his hand off me. "Lead the way."
He turns to his side and stands there making me confused. Noticing my confusion, he clears his throat and parts his arm from his body telling me to take hold.
Great.
I roll my eyes and take a hold of his arm and we finally start moving. His arm is larger than I expected and a lot harder, but I don't react. His ego is already too big and there is no need to inflate it any further.
As we make our way through the guests, I flash them a small smile and nod, every now and then, to keep the act going. His partners seem to like what they see as most of them flirt with me despite some of them having their wives right next to them. If they don't care, I don't either and I play along. I'm more inclined to do so as I watch Kai's anger increase every time.
I eventually stop holding onto Kai's arm after someone comments about how I'm latched onto him like we're newlyweds. Both Kai and I didn't appreciate the comment so I didn't even need his permission to know we should keep a little distance now. I'm sure the man made that comment to get on Kai's nerves because he only introduces me as a friend to them and our proximity won't make sense to anyone who doesn't know the truth.
Since I introduced myself as Hope earlier, Kai decided to continue that and has introduced me with that name to everyone. I'm kind of glad he did because I'm not inclined towards the idea of anyone knowing who I really am.
The longer we go around, the less drunk I get but since I keep flirting and Kai's irritation keeps growing, I have nothing to complain about. A whore he said, so a whore I shall be. I did tell him I'd do anything he says so I wonder why he's getting mad.
"Are we done yet?" I question as we walk through the crowd.
"Almost. We just have to meet one more person," Kai shares. He spares me a glance through his peripheral vision and I can't help but shiver at the look.
As we walk through the crowd, we make our way near the bar to a group of men. Most of them have their backs turned towards us, busy conversing. One person stands out to me, his short brown hair and tall, built frame giving him away. I tense next to Kai, coming to a stop. Kai notices and grabs my arm. He lowers, his lips hovering over my ear, "You're turn to introduce me."
I glare at him, my teeth grinding against each other. I open my mouth to protest, but before I can, Kai beats me to it.
"Captain James!" he yells catching my dad's attention. My dad and his colleagues turn around, displaying a well-practised smile on their faces as they notice Kai approaching.
You got this, Summer just make sure dad doesn't get a heart attack. I think to myself as I make my way over to them. As soon as my dad notices me, his smile falls.
"Summer?"
"That's me," I laugh avoiding the looks I'm getting from his colleagues.
"What are you doing here?" he questions.
"It's a funny thing actually, I–"
"She's here with me," Kai cuts me off. My mouth slaps shut as I glare at him. How am I gonna explain this to my dad? Kai throws back a look telling me not to fuck this up, reminding me what's at stake: Alice. This is fucked up because he's putting up the two people I love and making me choose.
"Yeah... what he said," I flash my dad a half-hearted smile. I watch as hurt flashes through his eyes. Kai's arm wraps around my back, pulling me into him as I drop my head unable to meet my dad's eyes.
"We just wanted to make sure everyone is having a good night. Hopefully, you have no complaints," Kai takes over.
"So, are you guys together?"
"We're just friends, " I answer before Kai can. I can feel Kai tense, but it doesn't last long. We both know by the way he's acting and making things seem, it's gonna be hard to convince my dad that just friends means just friends even though I despise Kai more than dad ever has.
"When did you guys meet?" dad questions.
"You didn't tell him, Summer?" Kai looks at me. This fucker is good. Too good.
"Dad, I'll explain it to you later," I urge. His eyes switch between Kai and I trying to figure out what's going on.
"I'd like a minute with my daughter," dad states looking at Kai. They both have a staredown making me nervous that they might just open fire here.
"I have to make a call anyway," Kai breaks the tension, conceding. Taking me off guard, he kisses my temple and whispers into my ear, "You have two minutes. Don't fuck this up."
I look at him with a forceful smile and he smiles back before reaching into his pocket and pulling out his phone as he goes over to the side.
My dad takes me by my forearm and drags me to the side, away from his colleagues.
"What's going on here, Summer?"
"Nothing," I answer.
"Summer, I'm a cop. You can't lie to me."
"Yes, but you're also a dad in this situation and it's clogging your judgement," I state feeling awful. I'm manipulating the man I call my dad and love more than my biological one.
"Okay, but that's fair considering all the things I know about him. Why would you even hang around him? He's dangerous, Summer," he warns as if I didn't already know. I wish I could tell him the truth, but he is a man of duty and honour. If I tell him the things I've done, I'm sure he'd turn me in too and I wouldn't even argue.
"He's a businessman dad. A legitimate businessman who owns car dealerships. If he was anything other than that, don't you think you would have thrown him in jail by now?" his face drains at my insult and I avert my eyes not being able to take the hurt I'm causing.
"What has that man done to you? Summer, I have a whole case file full of evidence against him."
"But it's not good enough, is it? That's why he's still out here," I spit. That's why I'm in this situation, I can't help but think. If he had anything solid against Kai, then our paths would have never crossed.
"Are you in trouble, Summer?"
"No. I'm not dad. I promise," I speak softly.
"I don't believe you."
"Dad, please."
"I'm coming over tomorrow and I'm gonna talk to your sister about this too. Does she know?" I remain silent. "She does, doesn't she? I don't visit you guys for a few weeks and this is what happens?"
"Dad–"
"Summer, our other guests are waiting," Kai comes just in time. I look up at him relieved that I'm saved from my dad l. For now at least. "It's always a pleasure, Captain. If you have any complaints, just call the manager, he'll be more than happy to help."
"Bye," I faintly smile as Kai drags me away. We turn around and my shoulders drop defeated. "What the fuck was that?" I hiss.
"What? I thought you'd like meeting your dad," Kai speaks not even looking at me.
"Don't act stupid. You know what you were doing?"
"If you know, then why are you questioning it?"
"Fuck you," I spit. "I swear if Alice is hurt–"
"She won't be," Kai says looking down at me. From his eyes, it doesn't seem as if he's lying so I nod trying to calm down. I need to get through this night so I have to forget about what just happened otherwise I'm gonna be stressing for no reason. There's nothing I can do right now and I have to accept that.
We start to approach some people sitting at a table and I'm somewhat relieved hoping that we finally get to take a seat as my feet are aching from wearing such high heels.
"Hope, this is Arjun our lead engineer," Kai introduces. I look at the man dressed in a grey suit, with his black hair brushed finely and a thick beard making him look even more handsome.
"Hi," I smile. I go to shake his hand, but instead, he takes my hand and brings it to his lips kissing the back of it, his beard tickling my skin.
"It's a pleasure to meet you," he huskily speaks. His throaty voice makes me do a double-take and I feel my thighs tighten. We stare at each other lost in our thoughts as I smile like a fool.
"Mm-hm," Kai clears his throat and I blush.
"Uh, sorry," Arjun laughs. "It's a great event. Everyone's really excited for the announcement."
"Yeah. We just went around and everyone's curious. Are you prepared?" Kai questions.
"Always," Arjun assures. "Join us. This is my mother, Divya and dad, Rahul."
Kai shakes their hands and I nod at them. I take a seat between Arjun's parents and across from him as Kai sits next to him. Arjun's mother babbles next to me and I keep my replies short as I lean back in my chair, staring at Arjun. His every feature seems to be built to perfection. I can feel my insides twisting at the thought of seeing what's underneath that dapper suit leaving myself surprised.
I haven't had sex with anyone. Ever, actually. I've been raped, but other than that I don't know what sex is. What the movies show, I've never felt. I kissed boys in high school because of Alice, but every time they wanted to do something more, I always declined. I just haven't been able to open myself up like that. That isn't to say I've never helped myself. My hand and vibrator do a great job at keeping me satisfied, but I still feel like I might be missing out. Especially right about now. I've been flirting with men all night and it's impossible to not want more.
"Arjun," I interrupt their conversation. They both look at me skeptically. If Kai can have his fun, then I should be able to have mine.
"Kai already knows what you do, but why don't you explain it to me?"
"Uh... yeah, sure," he nods. He looks at Kai silently asking for permission, but Kai's expression remains neutral. When Arjun brings his eyes back to me, I meet him with a lustful gaze making him nervous and unable to decline.
I watch as his lips move inaudibly. I cross my legs and extend my leg out finding his leg under the table. I watch as he fumbles over his words at my touch looking over at Kai nervously. I trace his leg up to his knee, then his thighs and in between.
"That's cool. Is it a lot of hands-on stuff?"
"Uh, mh, s-sometimes," he fumbles. I watch as his forehead starts glistening with sweat and he loosens his tie to catch a breath.
"Mmh. So you're good with your hands?" I ask biting down on my lip and leaning over the table. My elbows press my tits together making my cleavage more defined.
"I guess you can say that."
"Yeah, well I think you should show me one day. Kai will bring me to work, right?" I tease looking at Kai.
"Anything you want," Kai speaks calmly. He refuses to give me the reaction I want, but I know it's getting on his nerves. He has just perfected the art of hiding his emotions. An art that every experienced killer knows. I press down with my feet and I feel Arjun's hand grab my foot as his dïck shifts.
"Sorry I interrupted you guys," I apologize as I bring my leg down. "I talk a lot but that's just one of the things my mouth is good at though," I speak staring at Arjun. His face flushes red. The anger in Kai's expression amuses me as I know I've hit the right nerve. I just needed to be more blunt in my approach. "If you'll excuse me, I'm gonna go to the washroom."
I don't wait for a response. I slide my chair back and head towards the washroom which is located down a hall past the bar. As I make my way through the people, I look back and notice that I'm out of Kai's sight so, on my way, I gulp down two shots from the bar.
I make it to the hallway, the music and chatter becomes more distant giving my head a break. I hadn't realized that all the noise had given me a headache. I mean it could be that or the effects of the alcohol.
I push the door to the washroom open, but before I can get in, someone grabs my arm and pulls me back. I scream as they slam my body against the wall and my vision blurs from the impact and the alcohol combined. Kai's arms cage me in as he stares at me with dark eyes, a mysterious and raging look on his face. I inhale the familiar scent of his intoxicating cologne as I breathe.
"Kai, what the fuck?" I yell. His face inches from mine, our breaths mingle.
"I told you to behave."
"I am behaving," I state. My chest rising as I breathe nervously from the proximity.
"No, you're whoring out to my guests and drinking even when I told you not to."
"I'm not a whore," I state.
"Yeah? Tell that to every man you talked to tonight."
"You wanted me to talk to them," I protest.
"Talk. Not flirt."
"What difference does it make?"
"Summer, I'll make one thing clear," his voice low. His eyes scan my face before his head leans in closer to my ear. His hot breath makes the hair on my neck stand on their ends. "What's mine is mine and everyone knows you're here with me tonight. Now what kind of man would I be if I can't keep my woman in check?"
"You should've thought about that before you decided to tell everyone that. I'm not yours and I'm not here out of free will. Trying to control me is the equivalent of trying to control a hurricane, impossible," I make clear looking into his eyes.
I can tell he's mad, but I can't tell what he's thinking as he takes his time to calculate his exact words.
"I know the last few days have you frustrated," Kai speaks lowly. I gulp at the change in his tone. It takes me off guard and I become nervous instantly. I watch as he drops his arm and grabs my waist, soft and teasingly. My breath hitches as his hand slowly makes its way down, towards the slit in my dress.
"Kai," I stare at him confused. His eyes reveal nothing but a sense of dominance and pride knowing that he's controlling this situation.
"Which one of them should I call instead? Do you think they're better than me?" Kai taunts. His fingers on my bare skin makes my legs part giving him more access. Stupid fucking body.
"Look at that. Looks like your body wants me," Kai breathes into my ear as I turn my head away. Fuck.
"Kai," I gulp as his fingers rub over my panties. When I remember the holster on my leg, my eyes widen for a second breaking me from the trance.
"You're already so wet and I've barely touched you," Kai huskily speaks. I feel my legs becoming weak and my core heating up. My whole body on edge from the foreign experience as my insides wet on his command.
"Kai," I breathe unable to think. If he finds my holster, I'm good as dead. How do I explain having that? No excuse is gonna be good enough to make him believe what I want him to.
"Use your words, Summer," Kai demands teasing me through my panties still. I widen my legs a little more trying to keep the knives away. I can stop this. I can say no. I just have to find it in me to do so, but will no work?
...♛...
"Hey, look at me!" Nick yells.
"Please, don't do this, Nick!" I'm pinned to the bed with him towering over me. I have no escape route. He's going to do it. I try to struggle out of his hold, but even after years of training, I'm too weak. His face fits itself in the crook of my neck nibbling and sucking on the tender skin.
"Stop! Please, Nick! Please!"
Annoyed with me, Nick slaps me. Left half deaf and sobbing, he continues. His hands grope my virgin body mercilessly.
...♛...
"Come on, Summer we don't have all night," Kai says. I feel his lips on my neck. Instinctively, my head tilts to the side giving him more access even though my eyes start to water. My mouth gapes like a fish as I hold back a moan.
I try to fight it, but my body betrays me. I'm not strong enough to overcome my body's desires, my past trauma, my mind's confusion and the alcohol travelling through my veins. That's the exact same reason I can't tell what it is that makes a part of me want him to continue.
Fuck.
Kai's fingers slip under my panties working their way on my clit as I gasp loudly. His other hand wraps around my jaw, forcing me to look at him as he backs away to get a full picture of his doing.
"Uh-mm," I moan as I feel the nerves in my body dancing at his touch. This is wrong. So fucking wrong, but it feels so good.
"There's not a single man in here that doesn't want to fuck you in front of everyone, Summer but just know that there also isn't a single man in here who could stand up to me and take what they want," Kai states as I close my eyes struggling to fathom the feeling between my legs induced by him.
I feel the tears escape the corner of my eyes.
What am I doing? What is he doing? Why is he doing this?
I feel my juices dripping down my leg and my core begging for more as he continues. My hips grinding at his touch against my will.
Don't do this Kai don't mix business with pleasure. It won't end well for any of us. Your brother made the same mistake, but that was different. He was selfish. The pleasure was only for him. This is different. You're giving me the pleasure I want. You're tending to me without merit. You're making the desires of my mind and body intertwine. That's fatal for the both us. So instead of letting the pleasure consume me, I try to draw the line.
If you let him do this, you lose. He won't only control your actions, but also your body. He'll poison every inch of you just like Nick. You were strong enough to fight against him, but there is no telling if you're strong enough to fight against Kai. At least not when you have so much to lose.
I lick my lips and peel my eyes open, meeting the lust in his eyes. With determination, my hands cuff his coat creasing it. I use every bit of strength in me and push Kai away. Since he didn't expect it, he falls back a little unsteady. My legs close as I stand straight. Without a thought, I lift my hand and slap him.
"You can play with my emotions and you can play with my mind, but you cannot play with my body," I state. "I rather let each one of the men outside fuck me raw than ever let you touch me like that again."
It happens quickly. His forearm rests on my collarbone as he pushes me against the wall. His other hand reaches under the slit of my dress and he pulls out one of the knives from my holster holding it to my throat. I suck in a deep breath and level my breathing as the edge of the blade kisses my skin. My hand's fist at my sides angrily.
"So does every normal girl strap herself with knives when she attends a party?" Kai cocks. I clench my jaw staring into his dark eyes waiting for my response.
"I'd be a fool to come unarmed."
"You're a fool for thinking I wouldn't know," he plays on my words. "There are only a few more hours left and if you do as I say, Alice will go home with you tonight."
"What exactly is it that you want me to do?" I grit.
"Stop entertaining every man out there and behave like the good girl you claim to be. No more drinking either. If you can't keep it together for the next few hours, trust me, no one is gonna regret it more than you," he states. I stare into his eyes and there is no hesitation in them. He's not playing. He will do whatever is necessary and so I bite down on my tongue. Satisfied, he takes a step back and I ease off the wall finally taking a deep breath.
"I'll keep this as a souvenir and maybe I'll even get to use it later on Alice, but that only depends on you," he provokes. I watch as he shoves the knife into the inside pocket of his jacket. His hand still wet from my juices, he pulls out his handkerchief to dry his hands.
"Fuck you," I spit. I look away from him knowing I can't say or do more than that without putting Alice at risk.
I'm a girl of habit. I don't like losing and I don't like it when someone feeds off my pain. I hate it because Nick did that for so long. So I do the best next thing that comes to mind to piss Kai off and still keep myself within the boundaries he has set.
Kai is a man who's been denied. I don't know what exactly he was testing or whether he was even testing anything when he was rubbing me, but my denial was unexpected. He didn't think I had it in me to deny him and I didn't think he had it in him to take it. I guess we both surprised each other. The lust in his eyes is clear. He was enjoying it as much as I was. Kai is a man and even though he's playing it off quite well, I know deep down somewhere in there, his ego is hurt and I'm gonna feed off that.
Finally, I turn my head looking at him as I bite my bottom lip. His thick brows knit in confusion as I bend down, hooking my fingers through my panties and pulling them off. I bring the black laced panties, wet from the events earlier, up and throw them at Kai.
"I have no use for them anymore," I spit before walking into the washroom and locking it so that he doesn't follow me. To my luck, the washroom is empty as I stand in front of the mirror with my hands on the counter to steady myself. My head still spinning, I close my eyes tightening my grip.
Fuck. This is getting harder and harder as the days pass. Why is Kai doing this? For what? I think to myself, but instead of falling into an endless hole of thoughts, I suppress them. I take a few deep breaths pushing all feelings aside and remind myself of my real purpose which is to keep Alice safe. I can't let my ego get in the way.
I open my eyes and stare at the tears staining my face. I grab some paper towels and wet them. I dab it on my face cleaning the stains and then take another paper towel and wipe my legs. I quickly brush my hands through my hair and adjust my dress to make sure I don't accidentally flash anyone, but since I'm going commando, that's not a guarantee. I stare at myself for a second feeling the emptiness inside me and the need to finish what Kai started, but I shake my head clear of the useless thoughts.
I head out a few minutes later and find Kai still outside. His head turns towards me once he hears me come out. I can tell the few minutes have helped him cool down. His eyes are much lighter and the tension in the air is less dense.
"Ready?" he questions. I nod and hook my arm through his. We make our way back to the same table as Arjun. This time his parents aren't there, but there are a few other men. Once we reach the table, Kai pulls out a chair for me and I take a seat. The rest of the men stare at us like they know something. Kai takes the seat between Arjun and me.
"Sorry about the delay, gentlemen," Kai apologizes.
"No, all good," one of them laughs. They all exchange looks with smiles on their faces. I groan averting my attention knowing if I listen any longer, I might just kill someone.
"Right, Arjun let's get started then," Kai changes the subject. Their smiles drop at Kai's intense gaze. For once, I'm thankful that he isn't trying to indulge in my misery.
I watch as Kai goes on stage and starts his announcement. I don't pay attention and get lost in my thoughts feeling all in all heavy with emotions. Nothing even processes in my mind, I just become numb knowing that it's the easiest way to get by.
Arjun joins Kai on stage along with other members of the company as they display their presentations. Once the announcements are done, the event goes on for a few more hours. Even though I don't want to eat, Kai forces me to by setting a full plate in front of me. I take only a few bites and tell him that if he doesn't want me to puke in front of everyone, then he should let me be. I could see the anger in him as I denied his order, but he didn't push it further.
It's around two am and all the guests have finally left. Including my dad, who made it clear that he'll be visiting Alice and me tomorrow.
Now it's just Kai, Alec and I with some employees around.
"So?" I stand walking up to Kai who's talking to Alec. "Did I pass?"
"You did," Kai nods. Alec stands next to him, his hands in his pockets as he watches us converse.
"Great, where's Alice?"
"Right," he says looking at Alec. "One last thing I'm gonna need you to do."
"What?" I roll my eyes.
"Admit you killed Money."
"Admitting that isn't going to bring him back from the dead, now is it?"
"No, but it will allow you to take your sister home," Kai says. He always knows exactly what to say and I hate it.
"You really know how to piss a girl off, don't you?"
"It only makes you mad, because it's the truth that you run away from. You can't just kill people and pretend you're a good person, Summer. That's not how the world works."
"You're gonna teach me how the world works? I'm a woman in this world, Kai that means I have seen more than you ever will," I state.
"The clocks ticking," Kai teases as he brings his wrist up and stares at the time.
"I killed Money," I state without hesitation. There's no point in hiding it. I've already lost to him. I might as well gloat just to piss him off. I step closer to him as I continue, "I also killed the other two men and let me tell you, I very much enjoyed it. I'd say they died a manly death, but as I held the gun towards them, their eyes betrayed them: they begged for mercy."
"Yet, you're so cold, that you didn't show any."
"It's not like they would have," I say feeling the heart in my chest beat, but nothing clicks in my mind. Talking about murder has become as common as blinking. It's automatic. No thought behind it.
Kai's eyes become hooded as he stares at me almost surprised by my unfiltered confession. To break him of his thoughts, Alec touches Kai's arm and they exchange a look. I can feel Kai's anger simmer. I watch as Kai slips a card out of his pants pocket and he holds it out for me. "She's in room one-seventeen on the thirtieth floor."
"Okay," I say looking between Alec and Kai before taking the card. I turn around to make my way out.
"I'd hurry if I was you," Kai speaks making me stop in my tracks. "She has about ten minutes before she bleeds to death."
I close my eyes biting down on my lip hard enough to draw blood. My eyes water as I realize the severity of the situation. There's a chance he could just be lying, but I'll only know for sure once I see Alice.
I could kill him because I know the knives in my holster are only an arm's length away but I don't have the time. Instead of letting the anger control me, I bend down and unhook the heels on my feet. Stepping out of them, I grab my dress and run as fast as I can not sparing a glance towards Kai and Alec who must be enjoying every moment of this.
Tears stream down my face as I run through the lobby. People and employees both stare at me, but I don't care. The door to the staircase slams open and I immediately make my way up.
My lungs burn as I climb, but I don't slow down. I would regret it for the rest of my life if I could have saved her by just being a little faster. I use the railing as support to propel myself upwards. It seems like forever and my legs become tight after twenty-five floors of climbing. By the thirtieth floor, my throat and mouth are dry. It feels like my insides are bleeding, but that doesn't stop me.
I enter the hall and look around spotting Cole standing in front of one of the doors. I sprint towards him, holding the key in my hand. I'm so fast, I nearly slam into the door but luckily the door scans the key card right away and I push the lever opening the door. Cole laughs watching the scene play out, but I don't have the time to bitch him out just yet.
"Alice!" I yell and spot her lying on the bed. My eyes scan her body looking for any signs of harm, but I don't find anything. She groans opening her eyes. "Alice," I sigh enclosing her in a hug as she sits up.
"Summer? Wh– what happened? Why are you crying?" she backs away and scans my face.
"Are you okay? Did they hurt you?" I ask sitting on the bed.
Her cheeks turn a deep shade of red, "I-," she clears her throat, "drank too much and ended up puking. The last thing I remember is Cole tucking me into bed."
"Alice, why were you drinking with Cole?" I scold. "What is wrong with you?"
"I know, I'm sorry. Cole and I just started talking and being mad was getting boring. He brought up snacks and we started watching Netflix."
"Glad to know they treated you well," my words full of sarcasm. Even though I'm a bit angry with her stupidity, I'm relieved to see her alive and untouched.
"You tell me. You look sexy. Where'd you get the dress?"
"Kai made me wear it to his stupid event," I tell her.
"So I'm assuming you passed? What did he make you do?" Alice asks becoming more serious.
"Nothing. I just had to go to the event and behave," I say.
"Really? That's stupid. So nothing else happened?" she questions not convinced.
"Yes. Nothing else happened, but who knows what's going through that man's head. I'm just happy you're okay," I tell her.
"Does he still want you to work for him?" Alice asks. I look at her sympathetically, taking her hands in mine. I nod and her face instantly falls.
"I'll be okay," I assure her.
"I know," Alice sighs hugging me. Tears rush down my cheeks again. "They'll always hold us over you."
I part from her, keeping my hands on her shoulders, "But there's no need to worry. I promise you, I'll do whatever I can to keep you and dad safe."
"But you won't be able to do what you need. I wish there was –"
"Alice, don't wish for things like that," I cut her words short. She nods, hurtful tears rushing down her cheeks as well. "Come on, let's go home and treat our hangovers."
"You drank too?"
"A little, but I was talking about the headache Kai gave me."
"Oh," Alice nods, dumbfounded. She gets up and we both exit the room. I find Cole still standing outside, a big smile on his face.
"How was the reunion?" Cole questions. Alice and I continue walking and ignore him. His footsteps follow behind us.
"Why are you following us?" I stop and turn around.
"No thank you for keeping your sister safe?" Cole cocks an eyebrow as I stare up at him.
"Do you expect a thank you for using my face as a punching bag too?" I sneer.
"He did that to you?" Alive gasps. Cole's face instantly falls into a scowl.
"What do you want Cole? We've had a long night and we'd like to go home in peace."
"I know," Cole sighs, for once showing a little remorse. "Kai wants me to drop you guys off."
"We'll manage."
"I know you will, but I have to make sure you guys get home safe," Cole says.
"Cole, I know you haven't done anything to me today, but I'm telling you if you test my patience, I will take all the anger from today out on you and you will not appreciate that. And, as much as I love pissing Kai off, I think hurting you beyond repair will seal the same fate for me. I don't know about you but I like the full movement of my limbs," I threaten.
Cole opens his mouth to speak, but when he notices something, he rushes past me. I watch as Alice faints, but Cole catches her lifting her bridal style.
"What the fuck did you do to her?" I hiss.
"Nothing. She refused to eat and when she did it was junk and booze," Cole says. I watch as Cole starts walking towards the elevator. "Are you coming?"
I roll my eyes and follow him knowing that I'm not in the shape to carry Alice myself. I press the elevator button and we wait. Once the doors open, we get in. I look at Alice, her head resting on Cole's chest peacefully.
"Thanks for not hurting her," I thank looking down as I swallow. It might be for selfish reasons, but Alice being alive is the only thing keeping me alive and the old Summer buried.
Cole nods in response. We remain silent the rest of the way. When we reach the garage, I dig into Cole's pocket for his keys. I unlock the BMW and open the backseat so he can set Alice down. She groans a bit, but he tells her to go back to sleep. She asks for my permission and I nod in approval. Her eyes shut, drifting back into sleep.
I sit in the passenger seat and pass the keys to Cole. He gets in and starts driving. I yawn but fight against the sleep threatening to take over.
"If you're tired, you can sleep. It's a long ride home," Cole says.
"I rather not be killed in my sleep, thank you though."
"I won't kill you in your sleep," Cole lets out a small laugh.
"Right. You probably have some sick torture fantasy," I retort.
"Our beef isn't personal," Cole states.
"You made it personal when you beat me."
"You gave up. No one told you to."
"That's true."
"We're all human, Summer," Cole says.
"Never said you weren't."
"You're really hard to get through, aren't you?"
"Well, I'm sorry I don't wanna converse with the man who literally beat me and is an accomplice to the mental, emotional and physical abuse his so-called colleague is inflicting upon me," I spit. This seems to do it because Cole doesn't speak for the rest of the ride home.
Once we make it home, Cole carries Alice to bed and tucks her in. I wait patiently in the living area as he comes out. He stands in front of me, arms crossed over his chest as I stare up at him.
"You act like you're this angel who has never done wrong by anyone, but have you truly looked at yourself? I don't think you have because we all see it, even Alice.
Next time you stand in front of Kai, for a second, just forget the rage and think about how no one else but you can stand up to a man like that. Think of the worst way you could describe him, the worst of the worst and just apply that to yourself because you two are a walking replication of one another.
You don't see it right now because even you fear that side of yourself but don't hang onto this facade of innocence you're putting up. It's interdependent. It's not from within and you know that. That's why you cling onto your family so much because if they're not there, neither is your innocence."
"Anything else?" I question, my eyes stinging from holding the tears back. His face shocked at my apathetic response.
"No," he breathes. "We'll see you the day after tomorrow then."
I nod opening the door for him. He lets out a small laugh as he salutes me on his way out. I lock the door behind him before I head to the bathroom.
My legs go weak and I use the weight of my body to close the door as I slide down it. A shaky breath escapes my lips as my lungs tighten finding it hard to breathe. Tears make their way out of my eyes as soft whimpers fill the room. I bring my knees up to my chest sitting in a fetal position as I cry.
I don't want to go back, not at all. I hated my life before. I hated killing, I hated baiting, and I hated being a gang leader's daughter. My family cared about me and I loved them, but at times, I felt like nothing more than an asset. The way my brain works, the way Nick rewired it scares me.
Everything Kai did to me today, is unbelievable. It's like he knows me better than everyone. I was so stupid thinking that I could somehow win against him while he holds so much against me. I'm at a disadvantage and I always will be, but it's too difficult for me to accept.
He wanted to see me break and he got exactly what he wanted. He made me believe that Alice was going to die because of me tonight. But in a way, he showed me the future. If I don't let these people go, they will die because of me.
With that thought, I let it all loose. I let myself feel the emotions I've been trying so hard to suppress and sob.
What has my life become?
A/N:
An action-packed chapter if I may say so myself.
In the older version, there were about 3 chapters that made up everything this chapter includes in one so that explains the length and why it's so long. I'm not complaining though because I had a lot of fun writing it!
Hope you guys are enjoying the story so far? What do you like better or miss?
