three
I don't really see my father very often, he's usually away on business trips but the times when he's at home are wonderful. He lets me have all the freedom in the world and tells mum off for the bad things she does to me. Whenever he's not around mum can easily be compared to the devil but when dad's around she's a lot closer to an angel - hard to believe? I know, but it's true. My father's a lawyer who represents people all over the world in a manner of cases, usually he wins or at least gets his client to an agreement they're happy with. Right now, he was at home; relaxing on the couch, eating a bag of chips. I walk past him and he shoots me a grin, I smile back and he holds up the chip bag "Want some?" I bite my lip and hesitate, scanning the large room for any sight of my mother "Your mother's upstairs, quick, before she comes back down come and get some." I run over to him and pick up a handful, I shove it all into my mouth and chew it quickly, swallowing it. "Record time." He whispers as my mother walks down the stairs and into the room
"Hello, darling." She waves to him and he waves back, she walks into the kitchen completely ignoring me, she emerges with a pre-made sandwich. It looks wonderful but I can't eat it. "Don't you have homework to be doing?" My mother asks,
"No, not right now."
"Shouldn't you be somewhere?" I nod,
"Violin but you won't take me." I was supposed to be at my lesson in half an hour but I know she won't let me go.
"Find someone to take you, we have a whole host of servants." She scoffs. Yes, servants who won't take me because you told them not to. I trudge up to my room, rolls onto my bed and off the other side towards my desk. Picking up my phone I decided my best option was to message Woojin.
me:
can you take me to my violin lesson ???
woojin:
yeah, won't your mum take you?
me:
no she won't
me:
i need to be there in 30 minutes
woojin:
okay, i'll send someone to collect you
me:
thanks
I pick up my violin and hop downstairs, passing my parents my mother looks at me shocked, "What are you doing?"
"Going to my lesson." I say pulling on a pair of shoes, I check my hair in the mirror and stand by the door waiting.
"Who's taking you?" I shrug
"I'm not too sure, honestly." She shoots up from the couch .
"You didn't call a taxi did you?" Her voice almost cracks because it's so high "You can't stoop to that low of a level."
"I didn't call a taxi." I reply,
"Then who's taking you?" She fumes, the doorbell rings and I open it. She stands behind me, furious.
"Darling, calm down. She's probably just asked Woojin for help." She relaxes her face and looks at who's at the door; sure enough, in their easily noticeable, immaculate navy blue uniform stood one of Woojin's family's drivers.
"I'm here to pick up Miss Minjung and take her to her violin lesson. If you'd like me to do this every week, we can arrange that." He bows and then waits for me to exit the house.
"Goodbye mum, goodbye dad. I'll see you later." I give them both a small wave and I walk down the front steps towards the car. "Thank you for taking me." I say to the driver,
"You shouldn't be thanking me, you should be thanking Mr Woojin." He says with a warm smile on his face, it would be nice to be greeted by that everyday rather than a large bunch of cold stares.
"Your packet of biscuits, as I promised." I package drops in front of me from above. Woojin takes his seat next to me and I put the packet in my bag.
"Thanks." He pulls something else out of his bag and puts into on my desk.
"More food." I look ominously at the sandwich and attempt to remember my timetable. Could I burn it off with sport today?
"Do we have sport?" Woojin shakes his head, I push the sandwich back. "I can't have it then."
"One sandwich won't make you gain a few kilograms." He pushes it back reassuringly, "You'll be okay." I give him a grateful smile and put it in my bag with the biscuit packet.
"What do we have first period?" I say, as the teacher walks in,
"Why don't you turn around and see." I look up to see a tall lady had entered our classroom. My personal favourite teacher, Mrs Go. She teaches Korean, but that's besides the point. She's so relaxed and happy, she's just a really nice person. At the sight of her I turn myself around to face the front and I sit up as straight as possible
"Hello, class, how are you all?" Varying responses were thrown at her "Yes, yes, I know sometimes you're not going to have a good day. Did you say your boyfriend broke up with you, you've got to tell me about that - and what was that? You passed your dance exam, well done!"
Everyone was throwing stories at her and she was, somehow, taking it all in. "Okay, clam down now everyone. I'll just put what your supposed to be working on on the board and then I'll come around and listen to what you all have to say. Remember to work hard today, I've made this lesson a study lesson for your upcoming exam - I don't want to hear from Woojin's father that I haven't been teaching his son's class good enough now do I?" Every student shook their head, if she wasn't teaching Woojin good enough she'd be fired in the spot - whilst every student's education is important to Mr Park; Woojin's, of course, is especially important.
"We'll all do super well on the test, just for you miss." A girl says from the back,
"Thank you Eunji, now please start studying everyone." Woojin and I pull out our books and begin studying everything we had learnt so far, we weren't sure what the exam was going to be on.
"Woojin," I hear a whisper from behind us "can you help me out later today?" We both look up to see Hyungseob; not the smartest kid - his parents pay his way into the top class and pay even more to get his grades tweaked so they look better.
"Actually, I was going to go to Minjung's house to study there."
"Can I join you?" I bite my lip, Woojin inside my house is one thing - another person my mother doesn't know; specifically a boy, and she'll go mental. I can hear the profanity now. "I'll take that as a no." He slumps back into his chair,
"Wait a minute, Hyungseob." I pull out my phone and quickly text my mother
me:
Mum, do you think instead of Woojin
coming to your house and studying,
maybe I could go to his instead?
mum:
I guess so, it won't do you any harm.
Just be back by 7, okay.
Or else no dinner for you.
me:
Yes, of course mum. I'll be sure to do that.
Thank you for allowing it.
"We can go to your house instead, Woojin and then that way Hyungseob will be able to join us." Hyungseob's eyes light up and he clasps his hands together.
"Help from the two at the top of the school! Now that sounds awesome." Woojin nods,
"I can work with that."
"Okay then, after school and Woojin's house. Just please don't tell anyone else, Hyungseob. We don't need a whole group of people that need help."
"Can I bring Jihoon?" He whispers "And Haknyeon?"
"Jihoon will probably be at a committee meeting and Haknyeon, yeah I guess he can come if he has time though I doubt he will - but that's all." Woojin says and Hyungseob nods, understandingly.
"Of course."
