Peephole
Telling Jessica the heartbreaking news was the hardest thing Stevie and Jess had to do. They had to explain it in the most kid friendly way.
Jessica understood what they were saying to her to an extent having lost a goldfish a few months before. She soon broke down in tears and hugged her aunt Stevie tightly. She remained that way the entire day; she just didn't leave Stevie's side.
At times though, she would ask why her parents won't be coming home to pick her up. It broke everyone's heart.
A few days later, they had the funerals for both Christopher and Lori.
It was only then that Jessica felt that this was real. She saw her parents lying in their coffins and she sobbed as she yelled for them to wake up.
Everyone's hearts broke and Stevie had to take Jessica out of the room to calm her down a bit.
It was also too much for Barbara as well. Jess stayed by her side and held her up in her seat as she sobbed into his chest.
After the funeral, everyone met at Stevie's home since it was bigger. Jessica was sitting on Jess's lap with her head on his chest. She wasn't paying attention to anyone nor was she interested in what the adults were talking about. She just needed to be near her grandfather for comfort.
Stevie was in the kitchen with Karen and few of her friends.
Christine Mcvie, one of the five members of Fleetwood Mac was there. As well, as Mick Fleetwood and John Mcvie the other members of the band. There was only one member missing and that was Lindsey Buckingham.
Stevie's heart broke not having him there with her during this tragic time. The last time they saw each other wasn't a great memory and she figured Lindsey wasn't ready to see her yet. If ever.
By the evening, almost everyone was gone and it was just Jess, Barbara, Karen, Jessica and Stevie that were now in the living room just resting. It was along and exhausting day.
Soon, Barbara announced that she wanted to go to bed, so she and Jess left to go home. Stevie and Karen decided to stay in Stevie's home with Jessica.
That night, Karen left to her own room and Stevie was tucking Jessica into bed in a guest bedroom.
Stevie laid down with her and held her till she fell asleep.
Before Jessica drifted off to sleep, she looked up at her aunt with sad eyes and asked. "Aunt Stevie...what's going to happen to me?"
"Well, you're going to come live with me in California." Stevie replied. "I promise to take good care of you."
"What about grandma and grandpa?" She asked worriedly.
"We will still get to see them." Stevie said. "They will visit us as much as they can and we will come visit them too."
Jessica yawned and nodded. She was exhausted. Both emotionally and physically. She closed her eyes and snuggled closer to Stevie.
"Good night, Aunt Stevie." Jessica said.
"Good night, sweet girl." Stevie said.
Soon, Jessica was sleeping peacefully. Stevie managed to get out of Jessica's grasp without waking her and she walked out of the room.
Stevie sighed when she walked downstairs. She decided to make herself some tea since she wasn't ready for bed yet. Although she was exhausted. Her brain just wouldn't shut off.
After serving her tea into a tea cup, she took a sip but then was interrupted by the door bell.
She furrowed her eyebrows because she wasn't sure who could be at the door. She wasn't expecting anyone. Unless it was her father coming to check in on her and Jessica.
She walked over to the front door and looked into the peephole. Her eyes grew wide when she saw who was behind the door.
