The Key to my Heart
Soulmates are a thing in my world. A bit odd, but it's nothing but normal here. Explaining it to the princess and Coran was hard though, but here's a summary of it.
Everyone in the world is born with a soulmate. Every person is given one and only one soulmate, no matter the circumstances. You aren't obligated to fall in love or marry your soulmate, but it's kinda expected. That's a bit difficult when your in space though. You are usually given a soulmate around your age, two years or less in age difference. The older soulmates gets a key. Now, this is where it gets a bit weird. You aren't born with the key or anything, but it's kinda like you find the key. Around the age of 3 or 4, you'll find your soulmate's key, usually when you experienced friendship. It is said that you have to go through steps to find your soulmate, first understand love from family, then true friendship, and after that comes your soulmate's love.
But back to the key. It's like a key to the younger soulmate's heart. Now the younger soulmate doesn't have a key, they are born with the exact pattern the key has right above their heart. The only way two soulmates can realize that they're practically made for each other is through the younger soulmate. It's a bit of pressure, but basically, the younger soulmate is the only one allowed to know what their pattern is, it's suppose to be sacred, but the key apparently isn't. Once the younger soulmate sees the key's pattern and recognizes it as their pattern as well the soulmate can show the older soulmate their pattern. A bit confusing? Yes, but you'll get used to it. It's supposed to be romantic, cutesy and shit when you meet your soulmate. Mine wasn't.

"Soulmates sounds a bit odd." Allura mentioned.
"It is, trust me, but it's what us humans have anyway." I shrugged.
"It's not so bad, Pidge." Shiro chuckled.
"It is when you haven't met yours. You already met yours." I crossed my arms. I hated having soulmates. It's not like I didn't want one, but when my soulmate sees me they'll probably be disappointed.
"You have?" Allura turned to Shiro.
"Yeah. He's my best friend back on earth." Shiro explained. "We gave the whole dating thing a shot and it didn't work, but is ok because we're very close. I even was his best man at his wedding."
"What about you?" Allura looked at Keith and Hunk. "Are you two soulmates? You are very close."
"Us? No. I haven't met my soulmate." Keith answered. "My key is right here." He took out a silver key with red markings.
"Same." Hunk grabbed his key from his pocket. "Never leave without it." He smiled.
"I bet my soulmate is this amazing girl!" Lance gasped. "She'll be beautiful, funny, smart, heck she might even be a model for all I know!"
"I'm sure she'll be what you need." Shiro added.
"Of course, of course." Lance raised his hands defensively. "She'll be great with kids too. My nieces and nephew will love her, I just know it."
"Not to be impolite, but do you have a key Lance?" Allura questioned.
"Yeah, of course I do." He fished in his pocket for a while. "Oh shoot, I left it in my room. I'll be right back!" He shot up from the floor and ran out the room.
"Ok?" Allura stared at the door for a while before looking back at me. "Pidge?"
"Yes?"
"Do you have a key?" I always hated this question.
"No, uh. No I don't." I looked to the side. "I mean I do have the marks right above my heart and everything, but no key."
"Oh? Doesn't that mean you're the one who has to look for your soulmate."
"Yeah, basically. I never liked being the younger one."
"You don't? Why not?"
"I guess it's because a lot depends on me. I'm the one who makes the final decision. I always thought I'd screw it up or something you know?"
"Screw it up?"
"Yeah, as in mess it up."
"Pidge, I know you'll do fine whenever you find him. He'll be lucky to have you."
I think I'd be lucky if he even likes me.
"I'm back! I'm back!" Lance hollered through the halls. He ran into the room and sat back down next to Allura and Hunk.
"So, you have a key?" Allura scooted closer to him for a better look. Lance's face started to heat up and turn red.
"Ye-yeah." He stuttered. "Feast your eyes on this!" He took out a silver key, like Keith's, marked with teal markings.
"Wow, it's beautiful."
I didn't get to see it until he passed it around. After Shiro got a good look of it, it was passed to me. I looked at the design, not really paying attention until I saw something I recognized. Then, I started taking in the details. 'Th-this is my mark!'
"Hey Pidgey, you ok there?" Lance looked over towards me.
"Yeah. I just never seen a design like this." I huffed. I don't know when it happened, but breathing started to become a problem for me.
"Special, isn't it?"
It started to glow a bit, and I soon realized that the key knew. It knew that I knew Lance was my soulmate. I immediately passed it to Allura.
"Wow." She turned the key around and at first she didn't notice the glow, but then I saw her squint. "Is it glowing?"
"What?" Shiro perked up.
"Cool! I didn't know that could happen!" Lance took the key out of her hand.
"It's impossible." Shiro gasped, then he looked at the only young soulmate in the room. My eyes were filled were fright.
"What's wrong, Shiro?" Keith asked.
Shiro looked at Keith. "That means Lance has found his soulmate and the soulmate knows."
"So, your saying I found my soulmate?" Lance said slowly, he couldn't believe it himself.
"Yes."
"So, That means I met this person in space?"
"Yes." Shiro said. My eyes filled with tears, but I refused to let them fall. My heart was racing, I felt it.
"But the only other younger soulmate in space that I've met is." He paused before looking at me. Keith and Hunk made the connection and looked at me with wide eyes.
"I- I." I started. "I'm sorry!" I got up and ran. I left the room and headed straight for Green. Once I made it, I entered her, sat in the chair and cried.
"I found my soulmate. And it's Lance." I sniffled. It's not like I don't like Lance, to be honest I already had a crush on him, but at the time I knew he could never like me back. He was always after girls that looked like Allura, supermodels that were drop dead gorgeous and his soulmate wasn't. "Why? Why did it have to be me?!"
He should've gotten someone better. He deserved someone better, not some nerd like me.
"Pidge? Pidgey!" I heard footsteps towards the lion. It was Lance. "I know you're in there!"
"Leave me alone Lance." I mumbled. No matter how upset I seemed Green still let Lance in. Great, now the mythical flying lion is against me.
"Hey, uh Pidge?" He was a good distance away from me, but I wish he was closer.
"What do you want?" I sunk my head in my knees.
"Why are you crying?" He rested his hand on my shoulder.
"I don't know, maybe because I found my soulmate. Maybe because my soulmate is my fucking best friend. Or maybe it's because my soulmate is you!"
"I understand. I'm not the ideal soulmate to have, probably nowhere near your standards."
"My standards?" I looked back up at him.
"You know, a highly intelligent guy. Someone successful and useful." He looked at the ground.
"You're more than perfect! I wouldn't want anything else in a soulmate. Your kind, funny, and smart. Of course your useful, you're the sharpshooter." I smiled. "I'm the one who doesn't deserve you." I whispered softly, hoping he wouldn't hear me, but to my avail, he did.
"Don't deserve you?" He looked back at me. "Are you crazy?"
"Lance, you can stop joking. I know I'm not. You said you wanted someone funny."
"Have you not heard yourself?"
"Someone great with kids."
"Practice makes perfect."
"Smart."
"You're like the smartest person I know. You're basically a genius!"
"Beautiful."
"You're drop dead gorgeous."
"Good enough to be a model?" I snapped back.
"Forget a model, you're an angel."
"Just shut it! Shut up!" I covered my face with my hands.
"An angel sent from God himself." He grabbed my hands. "And somehow you became my soulmate."
"I'm glad you're my soulmate." I admitted.
"I'm ecstatic to have you as mine."
"You are?"
"I'm basically jumping with joy."
"God, I love you."
"I love you too." He shared the smile.
