Chapter 34
Minji pulled the lever and hit the accelerator immediately after which the new guest jumped in front of the bus like a spider sticking on the large front glass. Surprised and almost terrified, Minji flinched off the steering falling on her back, head lifted up.
"Minji! The steering! We might crash!" Young said pointing at the empty driver's seat. She eyed him nervously, "can't you see", she began, her teeth almost shaking, "that man is stuck on the glass.."
The man wriggled his limbs as if he were a fish. His pupils dilated and he smiled widely at the passengers inside. The unknown stranger then pointed at himself and next at them all together as if to communicate something to them.
"What is he doing?" Jay whispered to Ji-Hoon as they stood behind the falled Minji.
"I don't know. Maybe he wants us to let him in..?"
"Don't. Let's not." Jay said immediately.
"I wasn't going to." Ji-Hoon muttered.
"Thank god. Can't we just drive past him or something? Use the wiper, you know...?"
"Gosh. You can't wipe out a whole ass human with a wind shield wiper?" Ji-Hoon asked him in the same whisper yet his annoyance struck perfectly towards Jay.
"Sure, why not. What else do we do?"
"I don't know dude. Stop asking me."
"Then stop breathing!"
"What's up with you people and breathing? I can't do that."
"Then. Ugh! Just. Do something."
"Jeez. So much for patience. Fine."
Ji-Hoon cautiously tip toed towards the front of the bus. He waved his hand at the man. The man waved back at him happily as his smile grew wider and wider with every next continuous wave.
"Uh.. uhm.. what do you want?" Ji-Hoon asked wondering to himself if at all he could be heard from inside the bus to a person outside topping it with his nervously crooked and low voice.
The man mouthed to him, "let me in please." Reading his lips and surprisingly understanding every word, Ji-Hoon shook his head, "try to understand where we are coming from. We can't just let you-"
The man started tapping on the window with his finger nails. The long, oddly shaped, faded white nails created a sound making Ji-Hoon wary of his steps. "O-okay, okay. W-we'll have to check you for wounds though." Ji-Hoon completed with his hands going up slightly to prove to the man he wasn't there to harm him and is willing to surrender.
The man smiled eerily at him, nodding. He jumped off the bus on all his fours and stood back up instantly in front of the doors on the side of the bus waiting for it to swing open. Ji-Hoon peeped from the window and waved his hand at him, gesturing the man to step back.
The man stepped back good five steps. Ji-Hoon asked Minji to unlock the door all with his eyes. Minji shook her head revolting, "dude. He is obviously not human anymore." She whispered regardless of which her yelling was clear.
"I know. But we can't trigger him. He will turn immediately if we trigger him now and then we will all won't be human anymore."
"He is right. Even one of those are strong enough to break through doors if they have a grudge." Charyeong consented stating her concern.
"So what now? You want me to let him in?" Minji asked.
"No" Ji-Hoon replied, "just open the door. I'll step out and then you are going to shut the door immediately. I'll stall him for a bit. You shoot him close to the vital and we make a run for it..if it's all that easy then.."
"Wow. What a life saver." Young sighed.
"Dude. Either this or we trigger the guy and he breaks the windows and eats us up alive. Which one will it be?" Ji-Hoon whispered to him, his sarcasm cutting through clearly.
Young lifted both his hands up to his head, "chill man. You win."
"I'm glad" Ji-Hoon scoffed and glanced over at Minji. She sighed and opened the door. He jumped out. Jay immediately shut the door behind him. The man stared at the shut door, pupils dilated.
"Uh. Hey, man. What's your name?"
"Minsoo" He replied his eyes fixed on the doors of the bus.
"R-right. Minsoo. Sh-shall we begin the check?" Minsoo didn't respond to Ji-Hoon's question whereas his eyes were still hovering over the doors of the bus.
"Uh. Get the jacket off." Minsoo did so but his eyes didn't seem to waver as if he had locked on the sight.
"A-alright. Now turn back. Hands where I can see 'em." Following all of Ji-Hoon's instructions his expressions began changing like the seasons.
"Can you pull your sleeves up next?" And when Minsoo had done this too to which Ji-Hoon found no visible proof of him being a zombie he sighed nervously, "let me check your feet as well. Remove your shoes." At the end of his sentence Minsoo's eyes instantly crawled onto Ji-Hoon's visage.
What Ji-Hoon saw when he removed his shoes like unnecessary objects, he was horrified. The toe finger of his right foot was completely shattered and in purple and black while all the fingers of his left foot were twisted and the bleeding didn't seemed to have stopped, it seemed like the bones were shattered and he was still standing perfectly fine on both his messed feet.
"Y-you are wounded badly-"
"Am.. I?" The man asked slowly, smiling at him from ear to ear.
"N-no. I mean that must hurt. But you are clear. Uh.. Minsoo."
"Hehe. I know. I am human."
"R-right"
"I am human."
"Y-yeah. I know."
"I am human."
"I get it. Yes."
"I am human."
"Dude, Sheesh. Will you stop it? You are being so freaking creepy."
"I am human. Not creepy."
Ji-Hoon was already feeling the chills all over his body when Minsoo began chanting his identity as a human but when he heard this reply of his, it completely shattered him off his composure.
"R-right. No creepy." He flinched backward.
"I am human."
Oh gosh. What do I do? This dude is so weird. Quick Minji. I can't take this any longer...
He heard a sudden click behind him. As he turned to look, he found Charyeong and Jay outside the bus walking towards him. Charyeong was still wrapped in her blanket and Jay looked like he might as well faint right here. As soon as their eyes lay upon Minsoo's feet they pinned themselves behind Ji-Hoon impulsively.
And now we are so screwed. Ji-Hoon sighed.
"What. Exactly. Are you guys doing here?" Ji-Hoon asked in a whispering. He seemed very frustrated and Minsoo still had his smile shading towards them.
"Heh - hehe.. we thought we should help.. but.. uh.. this is not so pleasant, huh." Jay replied.
"Why..what did you think I was doing? Having a heart to heart with this dude?"
"Ji-Hoon. I was wondering. We are meeting creatures who can talk and reply and stuff...how long before this plague becomes the new mankind.." Charyeong blurted. Her random words -- her question, her thoughts didn't recieve a single reply for they too fell in a drakness they knew they were ignoring since the begining of this all.
A world where humans feed on each other and don't die? A world where eerie behaviour like this is a part of biology? A world where children are born with a twisted torso? Where zombies are the new normal and humans are probably just extinct or hiding waiting for starvation or heart attacks to kill them at best? There was just no way they were fighting so hard for the end to be that way.
"Hey" began Minsoo, "can I join you guys now?"
Ji-Hoon slipped out of his swirl of thoughts at his question, "h-huh? W-well.." he turned around to look at the windows of the bus but neither could he spot Minji nor Young. They were probably crouched on the floor of the bus terrified themselves. He turned back to look at Minsoo, "I- I guess there is no point in making you wait here, huh.."
"Hehehe.. let's go in then. I know of a place that is completely safe."
"Ah, ah. Right.."
"But you can't go with them." Came a voice diagonal from them.
