The Isle of Wight lies off the southern coast of England, a short ferry ride from the major ports of Southampton and Portsmouth, or, more scenically, from the little harbor town of Lymington. The island's name is derived from Vectis, the name given to it by the Romans when they settled here some 2,000 years ago.
