21-- August 18th
"Make a wish, Percy."
Percy looked up at his mother's kind eyes. "Anything?"
Sally laughed. "Anything."
Percy looked back at the blue cake in front of him. He thought for a second before taking a deep breath and blowing out the little flame on the candle.
Percy's mother cheered and clapped. It was only her celebrating his fourth birthday with him but it was enough for Percy. She was all he needed.
He threw his arms around her neck and gave her a big hug.
"Mommy?"
"Yes Percy?"
"I wished for you to be the happiest person in the world."
Sally smiled at her little boy, now all grown up.
She didn't know how she remembered that day so long ago in such detail but it didn't matter now.
She really was the happiest person in the world.
"Tyson, no!" Annabeth all but screamed. "We don't add in the blue food dye yet!"
Tyson looked at her, confused. "But I thought we were making big brother a blue cake."
Annabeth laughed. "We are. We just make it blue afterwards. For now, all we need is the flour."
"Okay!" Tyson agreed cheerfully. He took the flour and added a whole lot into the bowl before Annabeth could stop him.
"Now what?" He asked eagerly. "Peanut Butter?"
"No," Annabeth said with another laugh. "Now the eggs and the sugar."
"Eggs. From the chickens?"
"Yes, eggs from the chicken." Annabeth assured him.
"Not drakons?"
"No, not drakons!"
"Okay!" Tyson brought out the eggs and cracked them into the bowl.
After a few more minutes of figuring out which ingredient was which and nearly exploding the kitchen oven, they had a huge blue cupcake ready on a paper plate, sitting on the work top. It was definitely misshapen but Tyson was pretty sure Percy wouldn't mind.
Annabeth smirked at him. "Ready to go and give it to your big brother?"
Tyson smiled at her and shook his head. "No. You should give it."
Annabeth frowned but Tyson had already pushed her out the door to the camp kitchen.
He sneaked out to watch her give it though. He saw just how happy his big brother was and how much he smiled when Annabeth gave him the cupcake.
When she kissed him, Tyson knew for certain that it had been a good idea to make her do it alone.
Tyson grinned at his brother when he looked his way. Percy grinned back at him.
Ella the harpy giggled beside Tyson, watching the exchange but Tyson was too busy remembering that day.
Yeah, making cupcakes for Percy was definitely better than making things go boom even though he did make a few things go boom in the kitchens while making that cupcake.
"Grover!" Grover didn't realise Juniper was hurtling towards him at a million miles per hour before it was too late. Juniper gave him a hug, as tight as the hugs Grover got from his mama satyr, and the camp exploded in cheers.
They decided to take a moonlit walk along the beach. It was nice walking on the sands with Juniper, their hands swinging beside them, kicking at the waves and laughing at the wind.
Grover turned around a little and something caught his eye. The dining pavilion was almost empty. Empty except for the couple sitting at the Poseidon table. Upon further inspection, Grover realised that the couple were Percy and Annabeth.
Percy was halving a cupcake in two. He gave Annabeth one piece and ate the other. They talked for a while before Annabeth burst out laughing at something Percy had said. She wound her arms around his neck and kissed him.
Grover had to resist the urge to roll his eyes. Finally. Took them long enough.
Grover took Juniper's hand. His fingers found the engagement ring on hers. Juniper smiled at him and Grover smiled back.
Only when he returned to Earth did he realise that the cheering and the shouts of happy birthday had turned into ear splitting screams and squeals.
Of course.
It was Percy and Annabeth.
They were looking at each other with absolute adoration, drawing nearer and nearer by the second.
Grover cheered along with every one else. He had to admit, Juniper and him were pretty cute but this, this was the ship he had decided to set sail since the three of them were twelve.
He just had to wait a couple more years, until they realised the full meaning behind that Hacky Sack game.
"Nice plant."
Percy jumped ten feet in the air. He looked around surprised until his eyes landed on the smaller boy.
"Sorry," Nico apologized. "Didn't mean to startle you."
"That's - That's okay. I mean...what are you doing here?"
Nico tried to ignore the fact that Percy Jackson was watching him, probably noticing the height difference and the intensified underworldlyness.
"I've done some exploring," he told him. "Thought you'd like to know that Daedalus got his punishment."
"You saw him?"
Nico nodded. "Minos wanted to boil him in cheese fondue for eternity, but my father had other ideas. Daedalus will be building overpasses and exit ramps in Asphodel for all time. It'll help ease the traffic congestion. Truthfully, I think the old guy is pretty happy with that. He's still building. Still creating. And he gets to see his son and Perdix on the weekends."
"That's good." Percy replied.
Nico tapped at his silver ring nervously. "But that's not the real reason I've come. I've found some things. I want to make you an offer."
"What?"
"The way to beat Luke," he said. "If I'm right, it's the only way you'll stand a chance."
"Okay, I'm listening."
Nico couldn't help but glance inside Percy's room. His eyes fell onto the piece of birthday cake. It was blue.
He tried to remember the last time he had had cake for a birthday. Probably sometime long ago when Bianca was still alive.
"Is that...is that blue birthday cake?"
Percy smiled at him. "Come inside for cake and ice cream. It sounds like we've got a lot to talk about."
Nico looked at Percy with a smile. He didn't think he had smiled this big before. Ever.
Exept for that day with Will but that wasn't really important.
Now, when he looked at Percy, he was looking at just another person. A friend.
He didn't feel the need to be ashamed of himself. He didn't wish that he was normal. He was happy of who he was and in a way, Percy Jackson had helped him realize that.
Annabeth looked at the cupcake in her hands and then up at Percy sitting alone at his table.
He was watching Grover and Juniper walking on the sands.
For some reason, that encouraged her to keep moving forward and for once, Annabeth ignored the screaming voices of common sense in her head telling her to stop.
She slid next to him on the bench and smiled, trying to squash down her hammering heart.
"Hey. Happy birthday."
Percy stared at the cupcake then at her. "What?" He asked. The clueless expression on his face was kind of adorable really.
"August eighteenth." Annabeth reminded him. "Your birthday right?"
Percy looked like he had only just realized that. Annabeth fought down her laugh and said, "Make a wish."
"Did you bake this yourself?"
"Tyson helped."
He gave her a smile. " That explains why it looks like a chocolate brick. With extra-blue cement."
Annabeth laughed and watched as Percy closed his eyes and blew out the candle.
She wondered what he wished for.
He cut the cupcake in half and gave her the slightly bigger piece. They ate it with their fingers, watching the ocean and listening to the crickets and the howling monsters.
"You saved the world." Annabeth told him after a while, brushing the crumbs off her hands.
"We saved the world." Percy reminded her.
"And Rachel is the new Oracle," Annabeth said, not really thinking at all. "Which means she won't be dating anybody."
"You don't sound disappointed."
"Oh, I don't care." Annabeth said as casually as she could with her heart beating that fast.
"Uh huh."
"You got something to say to me, Seaweed Brain?"
"You'd probably kick my butt." Percy noted.
"You know I'd kick your butt."
He brushed the cake crumbs off his hands nervously. "When I was at the River Styx, turning invulnerable...Nico said I had to concentrate on one thing that kept me anchored to this world, that made me want to stay mortal."
Annabeth didn't dare look at Percy. Instead, she kept her eyes trained on the horizon. "Yeah?"
"Then up on Olympus," he continued. "When they wanted to make me a god and stuff, I kept thinking-"
"Oh you so wanted to." Annabeth cut off.
"Well, maybe a little." Percy admitted. "But I didn't, because I thought- I didn't want things to stay the same for eternity, because things could always get better. And I was thinking..." He was stuttering and he didn't seem to be able to finish his sentence.
Annabeth decided to help him out. She tried to hide her smile and replied, "Anyone in particular?"
Percy looked over at her. "You're laughing at me," He complained, like a little kid.
"I am not!"
"You are so not making this easy."
That made her laugh for real. She put her hands around his neck. "I'm never, ever going to make things easy for you, Seaweed Brain. Get used to it."
When she kissed him, all her thoughts turned into mush and for once Annabeth Chase could not think of anything at all. Her brain was not in the program and her heart was going haywire.
She probably would've just sat there for all eternity if she could've - just her and Percy - but a voice shook her back into reality.
"Well, it's about time!"
Percy smiled down at her and Annabeth thought that she would never see anything more perfect.
The blue party hat was balanced on his ruffled hair precariously and his eyes were sparkling. So many different emotions flew past them: adoration, amazement and as cheesy as it sounded, love.
The cheering and screaming and the chorus of Happy Birthdays faded away as Percy drew nearer.
When he kissed her, Annabeth forgot everything else but them.
Gods of Olympus...she thought giddily. Happy Birthday, Seaweed Brain.
