Article #2: Hazel's Past

Hazel is truly a remarkable character. Frankly, any sane person should feel sorry for her. First of all, she was an African-American female in the deep South city of New Orleans during the late '20s through the late '30s; secondly, she had to deal with the curse she was afflicted with due to her mother's selfish wish to have all of the riches of the Earth from Pluto; and finally after realizing her feelings for her friend Sammy Valdez, her mother moved them to Alaska and she never saw him again, since both she and her mother died soon after.

As if her life wasn't bad enough, she agreed to go to the Fields of Asphodel, turning down her opportunity to Elysium in order to save her mother from going to the Fields of Punishment.

When Nico brings her back to life, she is given a shot at a better life; a life without some of the minor problems she would have to face in her own time, such as extreme racism. She makes her way to the Wolf House and is later accepted into the legion, which allows for another improvement in her life to appear.

After Percy shows up at Camp Jupiter and receives his quest to free Thanatos, she joins him and receives some encouraging news from Pluto: her curse, the one her mother's wish caused her to have, will be removed by a descendant of Neptune.

Even though her life has been far from marvelous, Hazel still somehow manages to be kind to those around her who don't deserve it (looking at you, Octavian), and honestly, she never fails to impress how little she cares about the gods' plans. One such time was in HoH when she tells Hecate that, "(She's) not choosing one of (her) paths. (She's) taking (her) own."

All in all, it is rather interesting that the circumstances surrounding Hazel's early years haven't turned her into some horrible person, but instead seems to have shaped her into a kind, honest, thoughtful, and level-headed fighter.
