Leo threw the spanner across the room. Slamming the giant doors of Bunker 9 closed, he slid down their wide expanse and sobbed silently.
It's those we love most that become our undoing.
Leo Valdez had never imagined his love life would be so messed up. It was clear Aphrodite hated him.
He wanted to take back what he'd done, to find ways around it, to solve the problem he'd created.
"Move on."
Her words were like ants and his mind, the honey. They had become stuck and they were hard to go unnoticed.
"Forget me Leo. I was nothing special. I never belonged here, I never deserved you Leo. Move on."
But he refused. "Why?" He questioned no one in particular.
Why had this happened? Why was he the one always suffering? Why had he endured this pain?
"Everything you ever did for me Leo, I'll never forget it, even death couldn't stop me."
Leo wanted to scream, to shout. He wanted to punch something. To watch as he tore apart his mechanical creations, to watch as they fell apart the way he felt like he was doing.
Leo had died, but no pain he had felt before was this bad.
"So once you leave Ogygia," he said, "do you stay immortal or what?"
"I have no idea."
"And you're okay with that?"
"More than okay."
Tears rolled down his cheeks. Big, fat, ugly tears. He should have tried harder to get her to stay on the darn island. Coming off it had been her undoing.
He remembered her pale face and the words she spoke. He remembered the beeping of the monitor and Will Solace's grim face as he shook his head. He remembered Nico di Angelo standing just outside the room she had been in, in the infirmary. Nico had known before anyone.
He remembered her from just days before saying she had bad headaches, pains in her head. They had both dismissed this for normal headaches.
"I love you," she said, "I've never said it to anyone before, because everyone I fall in love with would leave me, but Leo Valdez, I love you."
He laughed at her. "You say that as if you think I don't." He pressed his lips to hers. "I love you too. And I'll never leave you."
He was right, he'd never left her. She, had left him.
"Why?!" He questioned louder.
"Forget me Leo." She told him. "You deserve more than me, you deserve someone strong. Someone who's not me."
"I don't care what I deserve." Tears ran down his face. "I just want you."
He was hunched over, his face buried in his hands.
He remembered what she had said. Her final words to him.
"Leo Valdez, I want you to move on from me, find a girl who loves you and you live too. Treat her right. Show her the love you've shown me. Forget me Leo. Find someone else. That, Leo Valdez, is an order."
He had passed out from crying, he lay by the doors, his eyes red and puffy, his cheeks year stained.
"I don't think I can."
"Try Leo. Please, do it for me." She breathed out slowly, the last time she would ever do so. "Try."
Even now, in his unconscious state he mumbled something.
"I promise Calypso, I'll try as hard as I can."
