We Belong Together (Toy Story 3)

This is a oneshot based on the day Andy left for college. I watched Toy Story 3 two days ago, which is why I decided to write this. That scene always makes me feel a sort of bittersweet nostalgia, and if I'm doing my job right, then this should make you feel the same way. Hope you enjoy!

The house in the rear view mirror was getting smaller and smaller. Andy had already taken his last longing look at Bonnie, who had been playing with all of Andy's old toys, before starting up his car and rolling away. Everything was going to change; the college he was attending was located in the next state over. He'd be in a new town, even a new region, and without any of his old school friends- or his family. Or his toys.

Andy had loved his toys like no kid had before. He never thought it was strange, the way he could imagine countless action-packed scenarios to put them in. Most of the time, he'd even create elaborate settings out of K-nex and cardboard boxes. Alien invasions, earthquakes, giant babies from outer space, bank robberies, the toys had survived it all. His toys all had individual personalities and lives, and no matter what, they could always save the day. As the years went by and Andy had grown up, they'd been there, even when he'd begun to stop playing with them. He didn't know it, but they'd always been watching out for him, whether it was from on his bed, up on the shelf, or tossed into the toy chest. When he was younger, all he had to do was look at them to feel better.

Of course, all of his toys were special to Andy, but there were a few that he knew he would never forget no matter how many years passed. Rex and Hamm were the best of friends, despite being a dinosaur and a pig respectively. Rex had always wanted to be scary, but he was simply too sweet. Mr. and Mrs. Potato Head had been happily married for eight years or so, even adopting three children (who happened to be aliens), and Slinky was the most loyal dog anybody could ask for. The cowgirl Jessie and her horse Bullseye made the roughest, toughest duo in the west, becoming two of the most renowned heroes in Andy's room. Buzz Lightyear was the alpha dog, though, the space ranger who kept everything and everyone in order. For a long time, Buzz had been Andy's favourite toy, even inspiring a complete renovation in the kid's room, changing everything from Western to space themed. There wasn't anything that the space ranger couldn't do; nobody that could defeat Buzz Lightyear.

And then there was Woody. Buzz may have been Andy's favourite to play with for longer, but no toy could ever replace Woody. The cowboy had been around right since Andy's birth, longer than any of the other toys. For the last seventeen and a half years, Woody had been Andy's right hand man, the deputy of his bedroom. The couple times Woody had gotten lost, Andy had been devastated, but the cowboy always returned. Woody would never give up on his kid, not even now that he was leaving for college.

"So long, partner." Woody had watched with a small smile as his lifelong best friend had driven away, off to meet his future. Andy had grown up, but Woody and the gang had been right there with him through it all. Even though he had to leave,  Andy still cared for his toys deeply, enough to have let them go to a new child. It had to have been incredibly hard for Andy to let them go, knowing he might never see them again, but instead of being locked up in the attic, Woody, Buzz, Bullseye, Jessie, Slinky, the aliens, the Potato Heads, Hamm, and Rex would be played with again, at least for a few more years. Bonnie was their kid now, they belonged to her. It was the duty of the toys to stay with her and watch her grow up as they had watched Andy grow up.

Some good times just ended, Woody thought as he watched the little blue car turn out of sight. But there are more to come. Footsteps sounded from inside the house, and Bonnie burst out the door. She scooped up all the toys laying on the porch in her arms and bolted back inside.

"The evil witch is back, cowboy!" She told Woody and the rest of the toys. "We have to stop her!" Bonnie bounded inside her room and leaped onto her bed, letting the toys fall all over her blankets. She giggled for a moment, but then adjusted them and crawled to the foot of her bed. She turned to face the toys again, who were now sitting in orderly rows.

"We're taking off now. Everybody hold on!" She yelled, letting out a whoop. "We're almost there!" She turned away from the toys to grab Dolly, the evil witch.

"Ha ha ha ha!" The witch laughed. Bonnie gasped.

"Oh no! We have to leave the spaceship, she's about to blow it up!" Once again, the young girl grabbed all of the toys (excluding Dolly), and ran with them into her closet, shutting them all in. "Okay," she whispered, "I think we're safe here!"

In the dark, Woody saw Buzz smiling at him- a real smile. Woody returned it. He'd never forget Andy, and he'd always miss the first kid who'd ever played with him. But for now, Woody planned to live in the moment and enjoy being played with again. After all, Andy had grown up so fast. He was sure Bonnie would be no different.

Ahh, I teared up the tiniest bit writing this... I know I've said this before, but it's so bittersweet.
