The Last Good Day (Toy Story 2) + Tags
This one- shot is from Jessie's POV. You'll figure out pretty quickly what it's about! :)
Emily burst into her room before beginning to slowly pace the length of it. Her friends were going to be here in around ten minutes, and she couldn't wait. She'd been incredibly bored all day, but soon she'd have something to do. Flopping down onto her bed, Emily looked up at the ceiling. What to do until then? She sat up quickly, and a flash of red caught her eye.
"Hey! Jessie!" Emily stood, walked over to her dresser, and picked up her cowgirl doll. "Man.. it's been ages." She thought aloud, then pursed her lips thoughtfully. Hmm.. it'd be a while before Taylor and Kaitlyn arrived. Emily's gaze didn't leave Jessie for several long seconds. Then a smile began to brighten her face.
Emily made a nickering noise as she nudged Jessie with her model horse. The mare was a black tobiano, and she was the old favourite of both Emily and Jessie.
"What's that? You want to go for a ride?" Emily spoke for Jessie, and then flung her up over the horse's side. "Well, alrighty then! Ride like the wind, Breezy!"
The smile Jessie wore as she was cantered throughout the little house may have been painted on, but that didn't mean it wasn't genuine. Emily was twelve now, and she'd been gradually changing. Jessie, and most of the other toys Emily possessed, had been more or less shunned by the girl. Emily didn't need toys to play with, her friends came over almost every day. They talked and gossiped for hours, gave each other makeovers, and sometimes even made long phone calls to other classmates. The loneliness she'd been beginning to feel lately didn't matter though, Jessie was being played with again!
Emily turned sharply to the left, galloping back into her room.
"It's time to round up the herd, Jessie!" She exclaimed. Rushing over to her row of model horses, still holding Breezy and Jessie, Emily gathered up as many horses as she could in her arms. Gently she set them down on the floor, making sure each was standing upright. "You ready, partner?" She asked with a southern drawl.
"Yee haw!" Jessie howled as sped along on her trusty steed. The herd next to them was flying over the arid desert terrain, and Jessie hunched over slightly as Breezy cleared a tumbleweed. "Hey!" She called as the lead horse began to veer off course. "You can't go that way!" Spurring Breezy on, Jessie came up neck and neck with the flea bitten grey stallion.
"Stay real steady now, you hear me?" Jessie hollered, making sure Breezy heard her. In response, the patched horse tossed her mane and flicked her ears. Slowly, Jessie stood up on Breezy's back as the herd continued to thunder along. Getting her balance, Jessie prepared to jump onto the back of the lead stallion. "Here we go.." she muttered, then leaped.
Time slowed down as the cowgirl flew through the air, barely making it onto the stallion's back. "Whoa!" Jessie was hanging over the horse sideways, and she tried to lift herself up onto the horse properly. Jessie gasped as she began to slip backwards, falling back towards Breezy. "No!"
Suddenly, there was something pushing her up and onto the stallion's back, stabilizing her before she'd had time to fall. Once she was sat up, Jessie looked to her right to see Breezy right next to her, still galloping along as fast as she could. "Thanks, girl! I owe you one!" Jessie called to her horse. "Now, let's get these critters back where they belong!" Gently, Jessie tugged at the gray horse's mane to guide him back on track, and it wasn't ten minutes later that Jessie had herded him and the others into their corral back at the ranch.
"Well, that was a good run, don't ya think?" She talked to the horses in the corral. "Bet you're glad to be resting now. I sure am!" Jessie laughed. The shrill ringing of a bell in the distance made her stand much more rigidly.
"Sweet mother of Abraham Lincoln! There's been an upset in the town!" Jessie yelled, once again hopping onto Breezy. The mare reared, almost throwing Jessie, before dashing off towards town. They arrived to see the sheriff consoling the bank manager.
"What's the trouble?" Jessie dismounted from her horse and bolted over to the two men speaking animatedly. The sheriff glanced at the bank manager, who wasted no time in telling Jessie exactly what the trouble was.
"Dynaguy broke in to the bank! He's stolen over three thousand dollars!"
"Dynaguy!" Jessie growled, then tipped her hat. "Don't you worry, fellas, I'll track him down; have him hog tied and brought to justice in no time! Just you wait!"
"Jessie, wait!" The sheriff called, but it was too late. She was long gone and ready to stop a thief.
If I were Dynaguy, where would I hide from the law? Jessie wondered. For a little while, she trotted along under the western sky astride her horse, contemplating where to go next. Suddenly an idea struck, and Jessie gasped.
"Of course; the old abandoned mineshaft!"
Moments later, Jessie was descending a ladder, down into the caverns where the biggest gold reserves in the west once existed. It got darker with every step down she took, and Jessie was beginning to regret not bringing a light source. When she finally reached the bottom of the ladder, Jessie saw something flickering to her left. Was that.. a kerosene lamp? Jessie's eyes widened as she snuck slowly towards it. A mean laugh filled the cavern, followed by the sound of metal clinking. Coins rattling together.
"Dynaguy.." her voice came as a whisper. She had him now!
"Emily!" A strange sound echoed through the cavern. It sounded like a-
"Yeah?" Doorbell.
"They're here!" The cavern and Dynaguy and the lamp all faded away as Jessie was jerked back into the present. Emily gasped and threw Jessie onto her bad before dashing out the door.
"Coming!"
Emily! W-wait! We have to catch Dynaguy! We nearly had him! Jessie thought. Oh well. At least Jessie was on the bed rather than the dresser. Maybe they'd even continue playing when Taylor and Kaitlyn were gone.
Seconds later, the three girls entered the room, all three of them talking and giggling.
"I can't wait for tomorrow!" One of the girls exclaimed, and Emily opened one of her dresser drawers to pull out various makeup tubes and mirrors.
"I know, me neither!" She sympathized with her friend. "In the meantime though, we can paint our nails, if you want." She looked at both of her friends with a huge grin. Walking over to the bed and setting her things down, Emily shoved Jessie out of the way. Jessie felt herself slipping into the space between the wall and the bed, then falling to the floor. Dust quickly coated her body, and she wanted to move, to clear it away, but she couldn't. It was against the rules.
It was just an accident. She was playing with me today, she'll do it again tomorrow.
The talking above her didn't stop or even pause to acknowledge that Jessie had fallen. She stayed under the bed for hours, waiting for the other girls to go home. When they finally did, Jessie waited hopefully for Emily to collect her from beneath the bed.
The light turned out, and Emily was put to bed by her parents. Jessie remained under the bed.
Emily won't leave me here. She's such a special kid, and I know she won't forget me.
As the days stretched into weeks, and months stretched into years, Jessie never lost hope. She knew Emily would save her one day. And eventually, she did. When the day finally came that Emily reached under her bed to retrieve the items lost, Jessie was the last to be brought into the young woman's arms. When Emily held Jessie again, she could put help but smile sadly. Jessie had given her so many great days over the years, she was a representation of her childhood as a whole. Now, she'd have to make some other little girl or boy feel the way Emily had when she'd played with Jessie.
Caught up in her own bliss at being next to Emily in the car again, Jessie didn't hear the conversations Emily, now 18, was having with her mother. She didn't hear the plans being discussed for college, or moving, or donations. She just felt the love Emily had for her, and the love she herself had for Emily. When the car pulled to a stop, Emily unbuckled her seatbelt and gently grabbed Jessie. They walked along a dirt path, beneath the trees with red and gold leaves, heading for a truck with boxes piled next to it. Suddenly, Emily's breath was more ragged than usual, her eyes shining.
"Thank you." She whispered to the cowgirl doll, before placing her so gently in one of the open boxes, and walking away.
Who caught The Incredibles reference? :)
I watched Toy Story 2 yesterday, and it made me want to write this. (Yeah.. I'm a bit of a procrastinator.) That's all for today, one-shot wise. Hope you enjoyed the story!
OKAY THEN. Time for the tag part! I was tagged by @morbid_mermaid. This oughta be fun. So I'm supposed to say thirteen things about myself, eh? Let's go.
1. Right now, my favourite Pixar movie is probably Cars. However, Finding Nemo is always going to have a place in my soul. That was the first Pixar movie I ever watched, when I was about a year old. From the first time I saw it, I'm told that I just loved it, and so my parents were forced to endure watching this film every day for several months with their one year old daughter. Finding Nemo may have come first, but Cars also played a big role in my early childhood. My family didn't watch that one quite as much as Finding Nemo, but it was very popular in my house. I've known the song "Life Is A Highway" since I was about four years old, and I haven't stopped loving it since. My brother and I each have a Lightning McQueen comforter from Christmas eleven years ago.
2. I have some pretty strange fears and aversions. For example, I refuse to eat mangoes in any form. They made me so sick one time I couldn't really move, and I was awake with moderate stomach pain for an entire night. Granted, I kind of brought it upon myself when I ate an entire bag of dried mangoes, but now I won't eat them. My other odd fear is of pigs. I'm completely terrified of them. Waddles is the only pig (and Porky Pig, too, I guess) in the world that I'm not scared of. Thank you, Saw franchise.
And of course, I have some more normal fears like heights and needles.
3. As you may have deduced based on my first fact, I am fifteen years old.
4. My primary fandom used to be Gravity Falls. Now it is Pixar. Definitely Pixar.
5. I really like country music. My current favourite song is Somewhere On A Beach, and there are several songs that I also like by Rascal Flatts (I.e: Hopin' You Were Lookin', Yours If You Want It, Rewind, Stand, and of course Life Is A Highway).
6. I'm not a complete Disney nut, but I did absolutely love Moana. Some of my other Disney favourites are Big Hero 6, Wreck It Ralph, Muppets: Most Wanted, and Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No-Good, Very Bad Day.
7. Neither myself, my brother, or my parents are really big into superhero movies, but all of us are massive Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 1 and Vol. 2 fans.
8. I have a job as a kitchen assistant at an old folks' home in my town. I started out doing volunteer hours for school, but then I was offered the job, so I took it. I've been working there for about a month now.
9. Sudoku is a pastime of mine. I play it several times a day.
10. Despite being a moody and introverted person, I am extremely close with my family members.
11. Before I signed on to Wattpad, I despised fanfiction because I had the wrong idea of what it was. I looked for fanfiction online, but all I found were XReaders and.. smut. Lots and lots of smut. *shudders* Don't get me wrong, if you like either of those things, great. I just do not. Predictably, once I came onto Wattpad, I found what were in my opinion, much higher quality stories, and I even began to wrote my own.
12. My favourite sport is running, and I will be signing up for the Cross Country Team once school starts up again.
13. My real name is Jill. Please just keep calling me Grey, though. I'd really appreciate it! :)
