Islands and Arguments
Just as Barbossa was about to pull the trigger, Aggie heard a familiar brave voice call out from the rail.
"Barbossa!" It called.
Everyone turned to see Will Turner climbing aboard the Black Pearl, he had survived!
Barbossa dropped young Aggie onto the Black Pearl's deck. She coughed as the air want back into her lungs. Elizabeth ran to her, holding her close. Jack sighed relieved that she was alright.
Will pointed Jack's pistol at Barbossa. "They go free!" He demanded, looking over at Aggie and Elizabeth.
"What's in your head, boy?" Barbossa asked him.
"They go free!" Will repeated his demand.
"You've only got one shot and we can't die!" Barbossa reminded him.
"Don't do anything stupid!" Jack pleaded silently.
"You can't!" Will jumped onto the ships rail and aimed the pistol at his throat. "I can!"
Now Barbossa was certain the boy had nothing in his head. "Who are you?" He asked him.
"No one!" Jack said "he's no one! Distant cousin of my aunt's nephew twice removed! Lovely sing voice, though... eunuch..."
"My name is Will Turner!" William announced "My father was Bootstrap Bill Turner! His blood runs in my veins!"
Now the crew knew why Will looked so familiar.
"He's the spitting image of ol' Bootsrap Bill! Come back to haunt us!" Cried Regetti.
"On my word, do as I say!" Will warned "Or I'll pull this trigger and be lost to Davy Jones locker!"
"Name your terms, Mr. Turner" Barbossa said.
"Elizabeth and Aggie go free!" Will told him.
"Yes, we know that one" Barbossa said "anything else?"
Jack pointed to himself, hoping Will would get the point through his dense skull to help him as well.
"And the crew!" Will said "The crew are not to be harmed!"
Barbossa grinned. "Agreed!" He said.
☠💀☠
No more than five minutes later, Elizabeth was being shoved onto a plank and forced to walk off the end of it and into the water below.
"Really Will?" Aggie asked him "Could you not have been a little more specific with the demands? Now Lizzie's gonna walk the plank! How typical is it for pirates to do that?!"
Will was held back by pirates as he tried to attack Barbossa. "Barbossa, you lying bastard!" He shouted "You swore she'd go free!"
"Don't dare impugn me honor, boy!" Barbossa told him "I agreed she'd go free, but it was you who failed to specify when or where!"
The pirates gagged and bonded Will.
"Though it does seem a shame to lose something so fine, don't it lads?" Barbossa stared at Elizabeth admiringly. "So I'll be having that dress back before you go..."
Elizabeth tore off the dress, left in nothing but her bodice. She tossed the dress at Barbossa.
"It goes with your black heart!" She snapped at him.
"Ooh! It's still warm!" Barbossa said.
The pirates coaxed Elizabeth off the plank, pointing their pistols and swords at her. Elizabeth stared down at the crystal blue water nervously.
"Too long!" Bo'sun shouted, stomping the plank and causing Elizabeth to fall into the water below.
"Your turn you little loud mouth!" Barbossa said, pushing Aggie onto the plank.
"You're a jerk!" Aggie told him "you're nothing but a pathetic excuse for a captain! The only reason all these men follow you is because their too stupid to think for themselves!"
"Ye best be watching how ye run that mouth of yours, missy!" Barbossa said, angrily.
"I may have a big mouth" she said "but I'm the only one with enough guts to tell you the truth!"
Aggie had struck a nerve in Barbossa. He unsheathed his sword and swiped at her. Aggie just narrowly missed the blade as it flew passed her face, but fell off the plank in the process.
Barbossa turned to his crew and grinned. "And last but not least, our former captain!" He said as Jack was pushed onto the plank.
"I'd really rather hoped we were past all this" Jack said to Barbossa.
"Jack... did ye not notice?" Barbossa asked "that be the same little island we made ye governor of on our last little trip!"
Jack glanced at the island "I did notice."
"Perhaps you'll be able to conjure up another miraculous escape... but I doubt it" he pointed his sword at Jack's throat "off ye go."
Jack looked down at the sword. "Last time, you left me a pistol with one shot" He reminded him.
"By the powers, your right!" Barbossa said "Where be Jack's pistol, bring it forward!"
The crew handed over the pistol to Barbossa.
"Seeing as there's three of us..." Jack said, continuing to stall "A gentleman would give us three pistols."
"It'll be one pistol as before and you can be the responsible one and shoot the young one, so you and the lady can starve to death yourselves!" Barbossa said, throwing the pistol overboard.
Jack dove into the waters after the pistol. By the time, he got to the island with Elizabeth and Aggie, the Black Pearl was sailing away from them under full sail.
"That's the second time I've had to watch that man sail away with my ship" Jack said, his voice laced with regret.
He took off into a shaded area of the island in the trees. Elizabeth followed him trying to get him to come up with a plan to save Will. Not having anything better to do, Aggie followed both of them as well.
"...But you were marooned on this island before, weren't you?" Elizabeth asked him "so we can escape in the same way you did then?"
"To what point and purpose, young missy?" Jack turned to her "The Black Pearl is gone! And unless you have a rudder and a lot of sails hidden in that bodice- unlikely- young Mr. Turner will be dead long before you can reach him."
Jack knocked on the trunk of a coconut tree and took four large paces forward and jumped up and down in the sand a few times.
Elizabeth wasn't giving up that easily though. "But you're Captain Jack Sparrow!" She told him "You vanished from under the eyes of seven agents of the East India company! You sacked Nassau Port without even firing a shot! Are you the pirate I've read about or not? How did you escape last time?"
Jack looked at Elizabeth and Aggie and heaved a sigh. "Last time... I was here a grand total of three day alright..." he admitted. "Last time..." he opened a cellar door hidden beneath the sand and crawled down into it "...the rum runners used this island as a cache. Came by and I was able to barter a passage off. From the looks of things they've long been out of business, probably have your bloody friend, Norrington to thank for that." He climbed out with two bottles of rum in his hands.
"I knew the sea turtle story was a load of crock!" Aggie scoffed.
"So that's it then?" Elizabeth said, disgusted "that's the secret grand adventure of the infamous Jack Sparrow? You spent three days lying on a beach drinking rum?!"
"Welcome to the Caribbean, luv!" He said, shoving a bottle in her hands and heading back to the beach.
Aggie, however, was even more disgusted and upset! She knew they had to save Will. She couldn't believe that Captain Jack, the man she was just starting to look up to, was just going to kick back with some rum and allow everything they had worked for over the past few days to fall apart!
"So what now?" Aggie demanded, watching him sit in the sand and pop a cork off his bottle.
"Well, we have rum, shade and food on the trees" Jack said "all of that should last the three of us a month, maybe more. Nothing to do but keep an eye on the horizon for passing ships..."
"A month?!" Aggie yelled at him "In a month Will will be lying cold and dead in the Isla De Meurta! While Barbossa and his crew will be god knows where with the Black Pearl and a load of treasure! Something has to be done, Jack!"
"Don't get your knickers in a twist..." Jack told her, annoyed. He went to take another swig of rum.
Aggie glared at him angrily and slapped the bottle from his hands. The bottle flew away and poured out into the sand.
"What are you doing?!" Jack yelled "that's our rations you're tossing away!"
"You can dry up on this island for all I care!!" Aggie shouted "You did nothing but lie to me and Will this whole journey! You were willing to put everyone's life on the line in order to get a ship- an inanimate object- back! Is being in charge of something really that important to you?! You have no one to blame but yourself for this! You dragged us into all of this!"
Jack's mouth gaped open. "I dragged you into this!" He yelled "Who was the one who just had to get out of Port Royal before she lost her mind! If anyone is to blame for this it's you! You were stupid enough to crawl onto that mast and slip up! I could've gotten that medallion and stopped all of that chaos! But no! I went against my better judgement and rescued you! I've been doing nothing but tearing my hair out, trying to help you and ensure your safety on this escapade! But next time you can help yourself! You can go die and be buried for all I care, you brat!"
Aggie stared at him with disgust and sadness. She walked off to the other end of the beach and sat under the shade of a palm tree, sobbing silently.
Jack picked up the rum bottle she had slapped from his hands, it was half empty as he stared at it. He let out a frustrated grunt and tossed it out into the sea.
"You really are unbelievable" Elizabeth said from behind him.
Jack didn't even turn his head to look at her. "Are you not done trying to make me feel remorse?" He snapped.
"No, I'm not" she said, her voice angry and icy cold. "It's one thing to leave Will to die, but you're the first adult I've ever seen Aggie admire. She looked up to you and you are just going to shove her aside like that!"
"She has to learn to hold her tongue or one day it will get her into worst trouble than this!" Jack barked.
"Maybe you should start to set an example for her!" Elizabeth said "Stop running away from the truth, Jack! I don't know much of your past, I don't know what made you so angry with the world! But you need to let go of it."
Jack got up and walked out of earshot from Aggie, Elizabeth followed him.
"Do you honestly want-or even care- to know why I don't want to get close to anyone?" Jack told Elizabeth.
"If it will help" she said.
Jack shook his head, he couldn't believe he was actually pouring his heart out to a governor's daughter. He hadn't spoke of this in years, but he had to get it off his chest.
He pulled out his compass and flipped it open. Elizabeth couldn't believe what she was seeing, inside on the lid of the compass was a picture of a proud Captain Jack Sparrow holding a newborn baby girl.
"The reason I don't want to get close to anyone is because once you do, they will take whatever you have that's precious and destroy it!" Jack told her, sadly. "It's true, I once had a child, a reason, something to love and that filthy, no good, waste of a man took it right out from under me!"
"Barbossa killed her...?" Elizabeth asked, finally seeing the pieces fall into place.
"Aye, welcome to the wonderful world of piracy!" Jack said "I don't even know if she's alive or not, she might be or she could've drowned, who knows?"
"I'm sorry" Elizabeth said.
"It's none of your doing" Jack said, his eyes slightly misting over with tears.
Elizabeth looked down at the bottle of rum she was still holding and set it down in front of him. She began to gather wood for a fire since it would be dark soon. When she came back Jack had the whole bottle emptied and Aggie was still sitting near the palm tree away from him. She leaned against the tree and began to suck water from a coconut.
Elizabeth finally got the fire big enough when the sun had just dissappeared under the horizon. Jack had drank two more bottles of rum at that point. Aggie had drank one and a half coconuts dry and was getting sleepy.
Jack continued to drown his sorrows in rum, Elizabeth didn't try to stop him. She had a plan to get off the island, first Jack would drink himself to sleep. Then she would take the remaining rum and light it up into a signal fire, if the royal navy was still looking for her, they would spot the smoke and flames. And judging by the amount rum they had in the cache, she had just enough to set the entire island aflame.
"Elizabeth, do you wanna know a secret?" Jack asked her, his speech slurring.
"It's Miss Swann" Elizabeth corrected "but sure, what's your secret?"
Jack leaned in close to her ear, the stench of spiced rum on his breath. "I like rum..." he whispered, taking another gulp.
Elizabeth couldn't help but roll her eyes. What a horrid drink She thought he'll be out soon enough...
Jack continued to drink, he was on his sixth bottle when Elizabeth got bored and stood up.
"I'm going to check on Aggie" She told Jack.
"Good idea!" Jack said, at this point he was really out of it. "Check on Eggie! And make the bacon extra crispy! Pancakes would be lovely too..."
Elizabeth raised an eyebrow at that, but went to the other end of the beach Aggie wasn't there, but there were at least six empty coconuts in her spot.
"Aggie?" Elizabeth looked around.
"I'm up here!" Aggie said from above.
Elizabeth looked up and saw Aggie clinging to a coconut tree above her head.
"What are you doing up there?" Elizabeth asked.
"Resupplying" Aggie answered, picking another coconut off the tree."Watch your head!" She warned as she tossed it down.
Elizabeth moved out of the way as the coconut landed in the sand beside her.
"Are you sure you wouldn't rather come near the bonfire?" Elizabeth asked her.
"Not if Mr. Jerky-Jack is over there..." Aggie mumbled angrily.
"Alright" Elizabeth said, not wanting to press the matter.
She went back to the campfire and saw Jack gulping down his seventh bottle until he passed out drunk on in the sand.
Elizabeth watched him go down and began to put her rescue plan in motion.
☠💀☠
The next morning Jack woke up to a horrible throbbing pain in his head. No matter how many times he got drunk, he could never numb the pain of the inevitable hangover that would come the morning after.
However when Jack opened his eyes he was shocked to see little Aggie had buried his entire body in the sand while he slept. Only his head was visible from the sand!
"Aggie, what are ye doing?" He asked her, as she continued to cover his legs in even more sand.
"Burying you up to your neck in the sand" Aggie answered "I would have buried your head too, but Elizabeth said you had to breathe. I beg to differ!"
"I can see what you're doing!" Jack said "but why are ye doing it?"
"Oh!" Aggie said "Elizabeth said I had to distract you so she could put our rescue plan into action!"
"Oh" Jack said, putting his head back down and going back to sleep.
Then Aggie's word hit his tiny hungover brain... and so did the scent of smoke coming from the trees!
"WHAT?!" Jack yelled, surprising Aggie and causing her to stumble backwards in the sand.
Jack turned his head and saw flames on the trees and what was worse, Elizabeth was throwing the last of the rum on the blaze to keep it going!
Jack popped out of the sand, spraying Aggie with some of it and ran, stumbling towards Elizabeth.
"No!" He yelled to Elizabeth "Not good! Stop! Not good! What are you doing? You've burned all the food! The shade! THE RUM!!!"
"Yes" Elizabeth confirmed "The rum is gone."
"WHY IS THE RUM GONE?!" Jack continued to yell.
"One, because it is a vile drink that turns even the most respectable men into complete scoundrels!" Elizabeth began.
"And it makes them talk funny!" Aggie added, cleaning sand out of her ears. "And stupid! And... well, pretty much Jack!"
Jack glared at her.
"And second!" Elizabeth continued "that signal is over a thousand feet high. The entire royal navy is out looking for me! Do you think that there is even the slightest chance that they won't see it?"
Jack answered her question with another question. "But why is the rum gone?" He said, looking like he would burst into tears.
Elizabeth sighed heavily and sat in the sand. "Just wait, Captain Sparrow!" She told him "You give it one hour, maybe two, keep a weather eye open and you will see white sails on that horizon!"
Jack pulled out his pistol, ready to use his one shot on Elizabeth. Then he remembered his promise to his little girl, that he would use it on Barbossa. He put the pistol away instead.
Aggie smirked at Jack as she walked up to him. "Karma, thy name is Lizzie Swann!" She told him.
Jack gave her a scowl and walked to the other end of the island, imitating Aggie as he went.
"You can dry up on this island for all I care, Jack!" He said in a whiny high voice "I wanted to bury your head in the sand, Jack! WELL, WHY DON'T YOU DO IT NOW!!! It's better than starving to death with you on this island..."
His voice trailed off when he realized Elizabeth's plan had actually worked! The H.M.S Dauntless was sailing towards the burning island with Norrington at the helm.
"There'll be no living with them after this" Jack grumbled to himself.
