A Truthful Bedtime Story

💀Baby Maggie in picture💀

Night had fallen over the Black Pearl, the sea's were came and the stars were in the sky. Captain Jack sat at the helm, he figured they'd be docking in Shipwreck Cove for Barbossa's oh-so-brilliant Brethren Court Meeting tomorrow night. Show off...

As Jack was try to plot their course to Shipwreck, he found couldn't think straight. He kept thinking about Maggie and how she reacted to seeing those papers.

Beckett, that slimy powdered wig wearing rat! Jack thought, Messing with me is one thing, but when you try to corrupt my little girl and turn her against me, you're as good as dead!

Of course, Jack knew he couldn't just run Beckett through, no matter how tempting the thought was. If Jack could convince the Brethren to join together and battle against Beckett, Beckett would take them all hostage and ensure that Jones won't kill Jack. Even if Maggie did hate him at the moment, Jack didn't want to see his only daughter grow up without him. At this point Jack needed Maggie more than she needed him.

Jack looked up at the moon and noticed it had nearly reached it's peak in the sky, meaning it must have been around midnight. Jack looked at Maggie's cabin door, there was no lantern light gleaming through under the door, so he figured she was sleeping.

Jack slowly opened the door to find Maggie asleep in her bed. He noticed some of her toys were scattered around the room. He went quietly around the room picking up the toys and putting them away.

"Daddy..." Maggie mumbled in her sleep.

Jack froze and looked at Maggie's sleeping form. Tears were running down her face as she slept and she was kicking her feet as she tossed and turned violently.

"Daddy!" She moaned in her sleep "Come back... come back, Daddy! I love you! Come back! Don't leave me!"

"Maggie" Jack gently shook her shoulder trying to wake her up. "Maggie!"

Maggie's eyes opened and she wiped the tears and sleep from her eyes. She saw Jack sitting on the end of her bed and crawled onto his lap, hugging him.

Jack immediately wrapped his arms around her trembling form. "Bad dream, Luv?" He asked.

"Yeah" she sniffled "I dreamt that you were mad at me because of what I said earlier today. So you had the crew put me in a sack and you dropped me off at an orphanage."

"That will never happen, Luv" Jack told her, truthfully. "Never in a million years would I ever do that to you."

Maggie nodded, but still seemed a little unconvinced as she remembered what she read in those documents.

"Would you like a story to help you calm down?" Jack asked as if he could read her mind.

"Yes" Maggie nodded.

"Alright, this story is about two birds, a girl bird and a boy bird" Jack stared "Now these birds were love birds and one day they noticed that the girl bird had laid an egg, right there in their nest!"

"Wow!" Maggie said.

"The love birds now knew that a baby bird would arrive soon and they were going to be parents!" Jack said "The girl bird was so happy about being a mother. She immediately began preparing for the baby. She read about how to feed it and and clean it. She bought it little outfits to wear and toys to play with. And she did it all while still sitting on the egg to hatch the baby bird!"

Maggie smiled at the thought of a mother bird going baby crazy.

"But at the same time the boy bird wasn't sure about having a baby bird in the nest" Jack continued on "The boy bird loved that they were going to have a baby. He loved that baby bird before he even saw it. It was himself he wasn't sure about."

"What's wrong with the boy bird?" Maggie asked "Is he the type of bird that flies into windows when there not even open?"

"What? No!" Jack told her "Well... maybe if he was flying while intoxicated, but... that's not the point! The boy bird's problem was that he didn't know if he could be a Daddy bird. He didn't know anything about baby bird's! He was worried he would lose it or break it or maybe it would fall out of the nest when he wasn't looking! The boy bird was not that responsible to begin with, but at this point there was no going back. Then one day, the girl bird left the nest to go get food for the baby, so that it could eat when it hatched. She flew off for the day and that evening a storm blew in, with wind blowing and rain pouring down and lighting striking everywhere. The boy bird knew his girl bird was still out in the storm, but he couldn't leave their egg alone or it would freeze and their baby bird would never hatch. But soon, after a lot of worrying the boy bird saw his love bird in the storm. She was on her way back to the nest, when suddenly just before she got there, a scarlet-red bolt of lighting hit her and she was gone. The boy bird watched her fall and started crying over his lost love, she was so young and beautiful and now she was gone, taken from him so soon."

"Poor boy bird" Maggie said, sadly.

"Aye, but the boy bird had bigger problems..." Jack said.

"He flew into another window?" Maggie asked.

"No!" Jack said, annoyed. "He didn't fly into windows! His problem was that with or without a mommy bird their egg was still going to hatch! And the boy bird didn't know how to take care of the baby bird either. He was hoping the girl bird would know. The bird thought for sure that he was going to be a horrible Daddy bird, so he decided to roll his egg to a cave where a bunch of crazy fruit bats lived. He figured when the baby bird hatched, it would catch onto the bat's way of life. But then fate intervened..."

"The boy bird flew into a win--" Maggie smiled, before her father stopped her.

"What is it with you and birds flying into windows?!" Jack asked her.

Maggie giggled.

"No" Jack said as he continued "As the boy bird was rolling his egg towards the bat cave the egg rolled too far away from him and smashed right against a rock. The boy bird flew over and inspected the damage, he was certain he had just scrambled his young baby. Then suddenly he noticed one of the egg shell's moving by itself. The boy bird removed the shell and found a tiny baby girl bird looking up at him. The boy bird had never seen something so small and yet so beautiful before. He immediately loved that little baby girl bird and decided to keep her. Mother bird or not, he was going to keep her with him forever."

"And...?" Maggie grinned.

"Oh, for the love of..." Jack muttered "And then they flew into windows together, the end!"

"Good story!" Maggie said.

"You know that story was inspired by something..." Jack told her.

"My birth?" Maggie asked.

"No-- Wait! Yes!" Jack said "How did you know that?"

"Well, I kinda caught on when you said they were birds and our last name is Sparrow!" Maggie smiled.

Jack narrowed his eyes at her and grinned.

"You're too smart!" He hugged her, kissing the top of her head. "But even though the story was tweaked a bit, it is true. Maggie, when your Mum died I was really sad and scared, not just for me but for you. You were only two days old, you were a newborn! I didn't want you to grow up without a mother. And I didn't know anything about babies, I didn't even know how to change a diaper! You're mother was supposed to handle that and teach me how. I didn't expect her to leave us so quick."

"I miss her..." Maggie said, resting her head on father's chest.

"I know, Luv" Jack nodded "Not a day goes by I don't still think about her."

Jack sighed. "But the reason those documents exist isn't because I wanted to give you up. It's because I wanted to give you your best shot at life" Jack told her. "I love you, Maggie. I loved you before your mother died and I love you all the more now. And that's why I didn't want you to come with me, to follow in my footsteps and become a pirate. I thought you wouldn't save living with me and the crew. So I sighed the documents earlier that day and made the arrangements for you to go to that orphanage. We were leaving port that evening, so I was beginning to pack your things and take you there. But the I heard you wake up from your nap, crying."

"What did you do?" Maggie asked.

"I picked you up out of your cradle and I tried to rock you back to sleep, but that didn't work" Jack continued, smiling at the memory. "And I tried to offer you a bottle, that didn't work. I even tried singing you a lullaby, still you kept crying! You were such a Cry-baby!"

"You still are!" Maggie giggled. (It's a Johnny Depp Reference... it's a Depp-ference!)

Jack gave her a look. "But you know what finally got you to stop crying?" He asked.

"What?" Maggie asked.

"Well, once you opened your eyes a little more you noticed all the trinkets braided into me hair" Jack explained "And for whatever reason, you liked them and tried to grab them and pull them off of my head, along with some hair. It was then I realized we had something in common, I liked shiny treasure and so did you. And then I thought to meself: 'Hey, if this kid is anything like me, maybe she'll be just fine staying with me!' So I asked you if you wanted to stay with me? You tried to yank the beads out of me beard, so I assumed that meant 'Yes, Daddy!' And I kept you and we've been like that ever since. Well... you did eventually stop pulling my hair though."

"Want me to start again?" Maggie asked, reaching for his hair.

"No!" Jack told her, putting his hands up in self defense.

Maggie giggled.

Jack smiled at her. "So now you know why I did what I did" he said "And I only hope you can forgive me for being a Dumb Daddy."

"Well, I don't think being a Daddy had anything to do with you being dumb..." Maggie snickered.

"What's your point, ye little monkey?" Jack asked.

"...But I forgive you" Maggie finished.

"Good" Jack kissed her forehead and nose.

"But I'd forgive you even more if you let me stay up with you...?" Maggie grinned.

"No" Jack said, tucking her into bed "it's late and you need to sleep."

"Do not!" Maggie said, kicking the blankets back off.

"Do too!" Jack argued, tucking her back in.

"Do not!" Maggie said, kicking them off again.

"But you have to!" Jack told her.

"Why?" Maggie asked, raising a brow.

"Because it's past midnight and if any children are out of their beds past midnight while they're at sea...the sea witches come and take them away... and eat them" Jack lied.

"That's not true!" Maggie said "There's no such thing as sea witches!"

"Just like how there was no such thing as skeleton pirates?" Jack smirked "And Davy Jones? And the Kraken?"

Maggie thought about it. "On second thought, I'm actually kinda tired so..."

"Good night!" Jack kisses her forehead "And remember to make sure your blankets cover your feet. That's the sea witches favorite part to eat."

Maggie eyes widened as she made sure her feet were properly covered and went back to sleep.
